WEEKEND CLEANING CHALLENGE Tidy Up Your Entryway [A photo of a table and mirror in an entryway.]( A clean entryway makes a good first impression, so we’ll be tidying them up this weekend. When cleaning, I rarely pay much attention to my entryway, and I doubt I’m the only one! That’s why it struck me as a perfect project to tackle for our latest Weekend Cleaning Challenge. With the help of the tips and resources below, you'll knock it out in no time. Start outside: • Wash Outside Windows. One of the quickest ways to improve your home’s curb appeal is by [washing your windows](. For now, feel free to stick to the windows nearest to your entryway. • Shake Door Mats. The whole point of door mats are to trap dirt so it stays outside, so they can get pretty dirty! Shake out your door mat to get rid of excess dirt and improve its performance. • Sweep. Before replacing your door mat, give the area outside your front door a good sweep to rid the area of dust and dirt. Finish inside: • Clean Inside Windows. Don’t forget to wipe down the interior surface of the windows near your entryway too. • Tidy Your Coat Closet. If your entryway has a coat closet, make sure it’s clean and tidy. These [7 coat closet hacks]( can help you get organized, while these [simple DIY sachets]( will help with musty odors. • Clean The Floors. Your entryway should be in much better shape at this point, but if it's still lacking in form or function, check out my post about [creating an entryway]( for ideas. UNUSUAL USES 3 Practical Things You Can Do With Clothespins [Photos of various uses for clothespins.]( When you’re not using them to line-dry your clothes, here are 3 other ways to use your clothespins. 1. Hang Rubber Gloves. The best way to store rubber gloves for cleaning or washing dishes is to hang them vertically—that way they can drip dry if they're still a bit wet when you put them away. Attach a clothespin to the inside of a cupboard door, then clip your rubber gloves to it to hang them up when you’re done using them. 2. Hold Lit Matches. If you’re using a match to light a candle in a jar, clip a clothespin to the end of the lit match before attempting to light it. The clothespin will keep your fingers away from the flame, making it easier to light the candle without burning your fingertips in the process. 3. Fashion A Makeshift Apron/Bib. If you’re about to do something potentially messy in the kitchen and don’t have an apron nearby, use clothespins to clip a kitchen towel to your pants for an instant makeshift “apron.” You can also use clothespins to attach napkins to kids’ shirts when you don’t have a bib at the ready. REMEMBER WHEN Easy-Bake Oven [A vintage photo of a little girl using an Easy-Bake Oven.]( One of my very favorite toys was my [Easy-Bake Oven](. It was the avocado green Betty Crocker-branded model, complete with era-appropriate faux-wood panels and a storage cabinet. I remember melting cheese on crackers and baking brownies in it, thrilled to have a way to make food and snacks without my parents' help. Easy-Bake Ovens have been a hit since their debut in 1963, and have inspired a love of baking in generations of kids since. Apparently, even celebrity chef Bobby Flay loved these little toy ovens—he alone contributed several recipes to the 2003 cookbook/retrospective The Easy-Bake Oven Gourmet. The cultural impact of the Easy-Bake Oven is undeniable, and helped earn it a spot in Time Magazine’s Top 100 Toys of All-Time. And in 2006, the Easy-Bake Oven received the highest honor a toy can hope to earn—induction into the [National Toy Hall of Fame](. There’s even a whole day devoted to these miniature ovens—National Easy-Bake Oven Day on November 4. (Speaking of which, while I was perusing the holiday’s official website, I found a [downloadable paper model]( of none other than my old avocado green oven, so that's my afternoon sorted!)
