September 8, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! A good chef’s knife may be the most indispensable cutting tool in your kitchen, but a pizza cutter isn’t far behind! Even if you rarely slice pizzas at home, the 9 tips in Today’s Good Thing will show you how useful it can be to have a pizza cutter on hand. And in a new Swap That For This, I’ll tell you about a game-changing product that puts chip clips to shame. My only regret about these brilliant bag sealers is that I didn’t learn about them sooner! Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING [Photos of various uses for pizza cutters.]( [9 Of The Smartest Ways To Use Your Pizza Cutter]( If you thought it was only useful for slicing pizzas, these 9 alternative uses for your pizza cutter tips will convince you otherwise. A Quick Way To Tell New Batteries From Old Ones [A photo of two AA batteries being tested.]( The next time you mix up new and old batteries, use this simple test to figure out which is which. It seems like turning around for two seconds shouldn’t be enough to make me forget whether the pair of batteries I set on my left were the dead ones or whether it was the other way around, but it is. In fact, it’s happened too many times to count! If you’re prone to these irritating moments of forgetfulness while swapping out old batteries for new ones, you’ll be glad to know there’s an easy test that can set the record straight. One at a time, and with the raised (+) side facing up, drop them onto a table from a height of 1-2 inches. The old/used batteries will be lighter, and thus more likely to bounce and topple over. The newer, heavier batteries will be more likely to remain upright when dropped from such a low height. Neat, right? No more picking two batteries at random and hoping they’re the new ones! SWAP THAT 🔄 FOR THIS Like A Chip Clip, But Way Better [Photos of Jillee using Gripstics on various bags.]( Chip clips may keep bags closed, but these sealing sticks actually seal in freshness. When it comes to keeping packaged foods fresh between when they’re opened and finally used up, chip clips do the job… adequately. A large plastic clip will keep most bags closed, but you’re never going to get a complete seal with a mere clip. Luckily for me, a couple years ago I learned about a different product that not only keeps bags closed, but also forms an effortless, airtight seal that preserves freshness. They’re called Gripstics, and after buying a [12-pack of them]( in assorted lengths, I ended up writing an [entire blog post]( about how great they are! Once I got the hang of them, I started using them all the time. They’re easy to use, endlessly reusable, and come in a variety of lengths for sealing bags of all sizes. If you’re frustrated with chip clips or similarly ineffective gadgets, this [3-pack of Gripstics]( would be a great way to give them a shot. JILLEE'S PICK Cost N’ Mayor [A GIF of a smartphone showing a video of the dance duo Cost n' Mayor.]( You know how they say that “couples who dance together, stay together”? Okay, so no one says that, but it seems like it might be true in the case of Austin and Marideth Telenko, AKA Cost N’ Mayor ([@cost_n_mayor](). This dance and choreography duo has amassed over 1 million Instagram followers with their impressive skills, fun choreography, and clear chemistry. I’m not much of a dancer myself (unless you count those dance lessons I took when I was 10), but I’ve always enjoyed watching talented dancers do what they do best. As a sample of their skills (and charm), here are a few videos to watch: • [This dance to 'Summer Nights']( they shared after Olivia Newton John’s passing • [This video]( of “NFL themes if they were choreographed” • [This dance to 'Last Dance']( for some classic disco boogie The Talenkos are plenty fun to watch as dancers and choreographers, but they're just plain cute together too. It's clearly part of their charm, and I look forward to watching all of their future videos! YOUR ONE GOOD THING Put Vaseline On Hummingbird Feeder Hooks Rebecca H. from Jackson, Tennessee has a very clever hummingbird feeder tip: "I love to watch hummingbirds at the feeder, but I’ve always struggled to keep the ants away. Earlier this season I tried putting a thick coat of good old Vaseline right on the decorative hook the feeder hangs from. There hasn’t been another ant invasion, and the hummingbirds are thriving on the sweet nectar." Brilliant, Rebecca! In the past I’ve recommended Vaseline as a way to squirrel-proof bird feeders, but it never occurred to me that it could keep other pests away too—especially pests as tiny as ants! But it’s always nice to know a solution for one problem can also solve another, especially when it comes to matters as serious as hummingbird activity. (I realize that could be interpreted as sarcasm, but there’s nothing disingenuous about my love of watching birds!) Have a great tip or trick of your own? A copy stands on the site today, installed in 1873 when the original was moved to the Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze. [Michelangelo](’s David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture and inspires as much awe today as it did in the 16th century. Odds & Ends: Today is National Ampersand Day, celebrating the [logogram]( we use to represent the word ‘and.’ The word ampersand originated back in the 1800s, when the symbol was part of the alphabet. School kids reciting the alphabet would say “...X, Y, Z, and per se and.” (The Latin per se means ‘by itself’, clarifying the speaker meant the symbol, not the word.) Spoken quickly, “and per se and” sounds a bit like ‘ampersand’, & eventually the name stuck! 🤔 Wordle: [Solve today's 5-letter word](. What did you think of today's email?
