If you need cash, consider stopping by a grocery store and buying something small in order to get cash back. Your favorite candy bar is cheaper than most ATM fees, and you get to eat the candy! WEEKEND CLEANING CHALLENGE Clean Out Your Everyday Bag It’s time to clear out the detritus in your go-to bag so it can serve you better. Whether you carry a purse, backpack, briefcase, or some other type of bag, I probably don’t have to tell you how easily its contents can turn chaotic. I try to limit my own purse to [items I find truly useful](, but it still manages to turn into a black hole occasionally! That’s why this weekend, we’ll be cleaning out our go-to bags and restoring them to a more functional state. Here’s how I recommend doing it: 1. Empty It Completely. Take everything out of your bag and lay it out on a table or the floor. Throw away any trash, old receipts, and other junk. Set aside anything that doesn’t belong in your bag, or that you aren’t sure how it got in there in the first place. 2. Clean The Inside. Once you’re confident your bag is empty, turn it upside down over your trash can and give it a good shake to help dislodge crumbs and other particles. If there’s still some debris sticking to the inside of your bag after shaking it, a few swipes of a [lint roller]( should make short work of it. 3. Clean The Outside. Examine the outside of your bag to determine whether it could use some attention. If so, make sure to use a cleaning solution and method suitable for its material. You can find tips for cleaning [leather](, [canvas](, and other materials on my website. 4. Put Everything Back. Once your bag is clean, all that’s left to do is put your stuff back in—ideally in a neat and organized way! Consider using a [purse organizer]( to keep things tidy and to make it easier to rotate through different bags. UNUSUAL USES 3 Surprising Uses For An Immersion Blender Immerse yourself in these useful (if non-traditional) applications for immersion blenders. 1. Make Salsa. Chips and salsa is one of my favorite snacks. My [favorite homemade salsa]( is unbelievably quick and easy to make with the help of an immersion blender—just toss the ingredients in a bowl or container, blend it up, and start dipping. 2. Blend Batters. A few pulses of your immersion blender is all it takes to create a smooth batter for pancakes, waffles, muffins, and more. (Just be careful not to over-mix, because it’s a lot easier to overdo it using a powerful immersion blender than it would be if you whisked it by hand.) 3. Make Soap. [This all-natural, fully customizable bar soap]( offers the same luxurious experience as more expensive soaps but for a fraction of the price. Plus, it comes together quickly when you use an immersion blender to incorporate the ingredients together. Treat yourself by giving it a try! REMEMBER WHEN The SRA Reading Laboratory The self-directed reading program known as the SRA Reading Laboratory was beloved by some and detested by others. Personally, as an enthusiastic reader from the time I began learning how, I remember it very fondly! I was thrilled when it was my turn to choose a brightly colored folder out of the box at the back of our classroom. Each color represented a different reading level, and each folder featured a short story with reading comprehension questions to answer after reading it. I wanted nothing more than to make my way to the most advanced color. (Maybe purple? I can't recall for sure.) The SRA Reading Laboratory system was created in 1950 by Dr. Don H. Parker as an affordable way to offer more individualized reading instruction to children. He had the novel idea to divide a series of reading workbooks into individual lessons, and put each one in a color-coded folder according to its difficulty. His system could be used to both assess students’ current reading ability and improve their reading comprehension skills over time. Science Reading Associates started offering Dr. Parker’s kits to schools in 1967, with one eventually finding its way to my classroom and helped spark a lifetime love of reading. A FEW MORE THINGS...
