Make An Egg Carton Ring Holder [Photos of egg carton ring holders.]( This simple DIY ring holder will keep your ring safe overnight or while you wash dishes. Iâve had a few scares over the years where I thought I lost my wedding ring, none of which were very fun. So to give myself a safe place to put my ring when I take it off to sleep, shower, or wash dishes, I made a few simple ring holders using an empty egg carton. Itâs really easy to doâjust cut one of the raised sections away from the rest of the carton. You can slip your ring over the raised part and use it as is, or you can dress it up with some craft paint or other decorative touches. Put one in every place you usually remove your ring and youâll have an easier time of keeping track of it! SWAP THAT ð FOR THIS Stick It To Flies (And Spending Money On Flypaper) [Left: Homemade flypaper strips being dipped in a sugary liquid. Right: A finished flypaper strip hanging from a cupboard door.]( You donât need to spend money on flypaperâit's easy to make your own at home! Fruit flies have a taste for overly ripe fruit and other sugary substances. And when warmer temperatures are causing fruit to ripen more quickly than usual, fruit flies can be especially abundant. If you're currently fighting a losing battle against fruit flies (or house flies, or any kind of fly for that matter), you don't have to spend money on flypaper to deal with them. Tackle your pest problem for free by making your own DIY flypaper instead! Here's how to do it: Cut a paper bag into strips that are 2-3 inches wide, then use a hole punch to make a hole at one end of each strip. Thread a piece of string through the hole and tie the ends of the string together to form a loop. Next, add 1/4 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of honey, and 2 tablespoons of water to a small saucepan and place over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Drag each paper strip through the sticky liquid to coat both sides, then hang the strips up to cool off with a towel underneath to catch any drips. Once the strips have stopped dripping, you can hang them up wherever you've spotted flies hanging around. Bye-bye, flies! But the credit for this particular discovery goes to Kaitlyn! As they often do in late summer, Kaitlyn's zucchini plants are churning out squash non-stop. Making zucchini bread is a time-honored tradition for those inundated with zucchini, so Kaitlyn went hunting online for a good recipe and decided to try the one she saw on Melâs Kitchen Cafe. She doubled the recipe and gave one of the loaves to me, and it was gone in the blink of an eye! It was everything I love about zucchini breadâmoist, cake-like, and with the perfect amount of baking spices. A warm, buttered slice of this bread is my idea of a perfect breakfast (or midday snack, or midnight snack⦠you get the idea!) If youâve got your own bumper crop of zucchini to put to good use (or a generous neighbor with a green thumb), give [this recipe]( a tryâyou wonât be disappointed! YOUR ONE GOOD THING Use Salt To Prevent Oil Splatters Christy from Suffolk, Virginia has a great cooking tip: "I learned a really good cooking tip a long time ago: sprinkle salt on oil before turning the heat on and there will be no splatters." Thanks for sharing, Christy! This is a tip Iâd never heard before, so I thought Iâd do some digging to figure out how it works (if only for my own edification!) The presence of water in food is what causes hot oil to pop and splatter. Adding salt to the oil can help limit splattering because it will absorb some of the water, leaving less floating around in the pan to vaporize and splatter once the oil gets hot. One thing worth considering with this tip is that while adding salt can help limit splatters, it will also reduce the smoke point of your oil. It may not be a problem if youâre using an oil with a high smoke point (like canola or sunflower), but olive oil and other low smoke point oils could smoke and develop a burnt taste if you add salt to them.
