August 12, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! I’ve been savoring the abundance of juicy berries being sold around town lately, and the evidence can be seen on many of my favorite shirts. (Darn those blackberries!) At least I know a great tip for removing fruit stains, and you will too after reading Today’s Good Thing. And count your pocket change, because Remember When is about every kid’s favorite neighborhood service: the ice cream truck. It was fun to reminisce about my favorite frozen treats from summer’s past, but it sure made want one! Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING For Your Next Trick, Make Colorful Fruit Stains Disappear [Photos of removing fruit stains.]( You’ll feel like a magician after seeing the results of this extremely simple stain removal tip. I’ve spent the last 11 years or so sharing laundry tips and hacks on my blog, but I’m still learning new ways to tackle various types of stains. And since it’s currently the height of berry season here, I thought today would be the perfect time to share a great way to remove berry stains from clothes. I would be doing myself a disservice if I didn’t attempt to eat as many ripe, juicy berries as humanly possible while they last, so I’ve been doing just that over the past week or two. They're just as tasty piled into a bowl and with a splash of cream as they are in homemade ice cream or pie. But it seems like no matter how hard I try to avoid spills, I often end up with a brightly colored berry stain on my shirt or pants. (I’m really hoping I’m not alone in that!) But fortunately for those of us cursed with clumsiness when it comes to berries, OGT reader Mary G. let me in on her super simple trick for removing fruit stains. All you need is a few things from your kitchen (though a step ladder could come in handy too). Check out this magic trick for yourself at the link below. Turn the water back on when you're ready to rinse. Use this showering technique to save water and money at the same time. WEEKEND CLEANING CHALLENGE Wash Your Bedding And Refresh Your Mattress [A photo of Jillee putting a duvet in her washer.]( Maximize the restfulness of your overnight oasis by cleaning your bedding and mattress this weekend. 1. Strip And Sort. Start by stripping off all your bed linens and sorting them into individual loads. You’ll probably need to do at least 2 loads to get it all clean, or possibly more depending on how many layers you have and how big your mattress is. Be sure to note any stains that need treating too. 2. Start Soaking. If any of your bedding is dingy and could stand to be both washed and brightened, get those started soaking ASAP. Brush up on how to [whiten yellowed pillows](, or how to [remove oily residue]( from sheets, pillowcases, or mattress covers. 3. Refresh Your Mattress. While you’re washing and drying your bedding throughout the day, set aside some time to freshen up your mattress too. All you need is some baking soda, essential oils, and your vacuum to remove dirt and moisture from your mattress and neutralize odors—[see the full tutorial here](. 4. Remake Your Bed. Once you’ve laundered all your bedding and freshened your mattress, the last step is to remake your bed. I suggest taking a warm bath at bedtime too—climbing into a freshly-made bed feeling clean and relaxed is the perfect recipe for restful sleep. UNUSUAL USES 3 Ways To Use Velcro Around The House [Photos of uses for velcro.]( These rolls, strips, and dots of hook-and-loop fasteners are a homemaker’s best friend. 1. Secure Rugs And Mats. Slippery rugs and sliding bath mats aren't just a nuisance—they can be a real hazard! Prevent mishaps and injuries by securing them in place with a few velcro strips at the corners. 2. Conquer Cord Clutter. Wherever multiple cords are taking up the same space, things can get out of control fast. Keep cords in neat bundles with the help of a few velcro ties, which are cleverly designed to adhere to themselves. This is also a great way to keep cords for your iron, hair dryer, and other plug-in items tidy. 3. Stop Losing Your Remote. If it seems like you spend half your life looking for various remote controls, some velcro can help. Attach one side of a velcro strip to your coffee table and the other to the back of your remote, and get in the habit of sticking the remote back to its spot whenever you're done using it. REMEMBER WHEN Chasing Down The Ice Cream Truck [An image of ice cream truck treats.]( Back when I was a kid, hearing those familiar, tinny renditions of “Pop Goes the Weasel” and “The Entertainer” meant only one thing—the ice cream truck was near. It sent my siblings and I scrambling to locate our spare change before dashing out in pursuit of the truck’s siren song. Here’s what I always hoped to see on the ice cream truck menu: • Fudgsicles. Not quite ice cream and not quite a popsicle, fudgsicles were delicious all the same. I doubt any child in history has made it to the end of a fudgsicle without getting chocolate all over themselves and everything within arm's reach. • Dreamsicles. Not a fan of chocolate? Get a dreamsicle instead. These bars had a creamy center and an orange-flavored outer layer, making for a sweet and slightly tangy treat. (Creamsicles were similar, but had an ice cream center rather than “ice milk.”) • Pink Panther Pops. While my kids reminisce about ice pops shaped like Spider-Man and Tweety Bird, I have vivid memories of pops shaped like the Pink Panther. These tart pops were not only delicious, but their gumball eyes were like a bonus treat. • Bomb Pops. These ice pops flavored with cherry, lime, and blue raspberry were and still are one of our foremost patriotic frozen treats. They have a slight creaminess to them that makes them softer than the average popsicle, which I really like. • Push Ups. Push Ups are one of my all-time favorites. The classic orange flavor reigns supreme in my mind, though I have enjoyed other flavors I've tried. The push-up tubes were a highlight—I remember using them as a microphone once they were empty. • Snow Cones. Who could forget the classic snow cone? This treat, perhaps better than any other, sums up the simplicity of the treats we craved from the ice cream truck—a snow ball doused in sugary flavored syrups. What more could you want?
