August 11, 2022 [View Online]( TOGETHER WITH [Hiya]( Good morning! There are several reasons you might be interested in trying a natural deodorant—to avoid skin irritation or harsh chemicals, to save money, or out of sheer curiosity. In Today’s Good Thing, I’m sharing my preferred formula with you so you can try a simpler approach to odor control. And chocolate connoisseurs won’t want to miss today’s Jillee’s Pick, because I’m sharing a truly divine chocolate cake recipe that Kaitlyn recently shared with me. (Because when you find a recipe this delicious, it’s only right to pay it forward!) Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING One Great DIY Deodorant, Two Convenient Ways To Use It [Photos of Jillee making and holding homemade deodorant.]( This easy-to-make deodorant will help you stay odor-free, no matter which format you prefer. There’s plenty to enjoy about the summertime, from cookouts with friends and family to trips to the beach or lake. But while I tend to look at summer through rose-colored sunglasses, I can’t deny that it's the sweatiest season, and often a rough time for body odor. If you have sensitive skin all over like I do, you're probably equally choosy about what you put on your skin. That was what originally drew me to the idea of making my own deodorant, but I knew I wouldn’t settle for a DIY option if it didn’t actually control odor! Luckily, after plenty of experimentation on my part, I landed on a super simple recipe for a natural deodorant that passes the smell test in more ways than one. I’ve been very satisfied with the results, so I'm passing the recipe onto you today. I’ve included two sets of instructions for making my natural deodorant below, so that you can choose whether to use it as a spray or roll-on. Just follow the link to get all the details! Keep Waste Basket Liners In Place [A photo of a waste basket with a hook holding the liner in place.]( If you reuse plastic grocery bags in your waste baskets, use this trick to get them to stay put. Now that I have a set of reusable grocery bags I like and can actually remember to use, my stash of plastic grocery bags is nowhere near as vast as it once was. But I always seem to have a few on hand anyway, so I usually use them as liners in smaller waste baskets. But in some of the taller baskets, the handles of the bag have a habit of slipping down and making the bag hard to remove once it’s full. Luckily, I found an easy fix that worked like a charm! I attached two adhesive hooks upside down on either side of the waste basket, then slipped the handles of the bag under the hooks. And voila, no more slipping! TOGETHER WITH HIYA The Modern Convenience Making Parents’ Lives Easier When my kids were little, I rarely felt certain that each of them—including one with both Type 1 diabetes and celiac—were getting enough vitamins in their diet. As if packing four lunches a day wasn't challenging enough, I also had to figure out what that they could (or would) eat! If you can relate, then you'll be happy to know there's now an incredibly convenient solution for ensuring the little ones you love get the vitamins and minerals they need: [Hiya Vitamins](. Hiya’s fruity, chewable vitamins are specially formulated for growing bodies and contain 15 essential vitamins and minerals. (What they don't contain is any of the added sugar and gummy junk found in most other kids’ vitamins.) Because they look and taste like candy, even picky eaters look forward to taking them every day. And by delivering refills right to your door every month, Hiya can cross this important item off of your to-do list. SWAP THAT 🔄 FOR THIS Make Your Own Bath Bombs [A photo of homemade bath bombs.]( Enjoy a luxurious soak in the tub for less by mixing up your own bath bombs at home. There are many reasons to love bath bombs, but the price tag usually isn't one of them! So why not enjoy the same feel-good relaxation for less cash by making bath bombs at home? (Using many of the same ingredients, no less!) Here’s how to do it: To a large mixing bowl, add 1 cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup of citric acid, 1/2 cup of Epsom salt, and 3/4 cup of cornstarch, then whisk to combine. To a mason jar, add 1 tablespoon of water, 3 tablespoons of fractionated coconut oil, 20-30 drops of essential oils, and 3-5 drops of food coloring (optional). Seal the jar and shake to mix. Slowly pour the liquids into the dry ingredients while whisking gently and constantly. (It’s crucial to work slowly here to minimize fizzing!) When the mixture begins to clump together, pinch some together—if it retains its shape reasonably well, the moisture level is just right. Divide the mixture among the cavities of a silicone mold or muffin tin, then pack it down as tightly as possible. Gently remove the bath bombs from the mold and let them sit out until they’re completely dry (between 3-24 hours). Store them in a breathable bag or container. Kaitlyn takes chocolate cake very seriously, so the fact that this recipe made such an impression on her was a very promising sign! The link she sent me took me to the [Chocolate Fudge Sour Cream Bundt Cake]( on Mel’s Kitchen Cafe. Kaitlyn assured me that the cake was rich and fudgy, but not too rich or overly sweet. Between her testimonial and the fact that I rarely get to use my bundt pan, I decided to give the recipe a try. It was everything Kaitlyn said it would be and then some! It was extremely unfussy to make, and the finished cake was absolutely delicious. It’s a must-try for chocolate cake lovers, and we all have Kaitlyn to thank for bringing it to my attention! YOUR ONE GOOD THING Use Leftover Fat To Feed Birds Merrily C. has a suggestion for what to do with rendered animal fats after cooking: "When grease has cooled, stir in dry oatmeal to absorb the grease, and it can then be fed to birds. Win, win! I tried this and the birds loved it." Merrily, thank you for sharing your idea with us! Thanks to my on-site bird expert (AKA my eldest son Erik), I know certain birds love suet cakes and even wrote a blog post about [how to make them](, but I have only ever made them with store-bought lard. After doing some research, it seems like most experts agree that rendered beef fat makes a great snack for birds. However, there appears to be less consensus when it comes to rendered pork fat—some cite potential carcinogens as cause for concern. It’s still too hot here for me to be thinking about putting out suet cakes or other fat-based treats for birds just yet, so I’ll do some more research in the meantime. (If any bird experts out there can weigh in on this issue, I’d love to hear from you!) Have a great tip or trick of your own?
