August 10, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! After trending on TikTok and receiving national news coverage, Utah’s favorite “dirty” sodas are the talk of the town. If you’ve been wondering what exactly dirty sodas entail, whether they’re any good, or how to make one at home, you’ll find your answers in Today’s Good Thing. In a new What In The World Wide Web, I’ll tell you about a rebellious form of gardening gaining traction online. It’s hard to believe planting flowers could be nefarious, but these horticultural hooligans don't always heed the law of the land. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING The Secrets Of Dirty Sodas & How To Make My Favorite One [Photos of Jillee making a dirty Diet Coke.]( You don’t need to swing by a drive-thru soda shack to give one of these tasty drinks a try. Not so long ago, “dirty” sodas and the shacks that sell them used to be something you could only find here in Utah. But as the [New York Times reported]( back in December, these flavored soda concoctions are becoming more and more popular in other states. Like many other Utahns, my favorite soda is Diet Coke, and it's hard to beat a “dirty” Diet Coke flavored with coconut and lime when I’m in the mood for a treat. It’s not something I drink every day (for several reasons), but every now and then, it sure hits the spot! But as convenient as it is to go buy one at the drive-thru soda shack in town, it’s much cheaper to make my own at home, plus it’s quick and easy to do. Today I thought I’d show you how to make my favorite dirty Diet Coke so you can try this drink trend for yourself! I’m also sharing a few other dirty soda ideas in case Diet Coke, coconut, or lime isn’t your thing. Give those ideas a try too, or use them as inspiration to start dreaming up your own unique flavor combinations. To get the dirt on dirty sodas, just follow the link below. The tank will then require less water to fill, helping you save water and money with every flush. WASH IT WEDNESDAY Choosing The Right Water Temperature [A photo of water temperature on a washing machine.]( Not sure whether to wash your clothes in hot, warm, or cold water? Here’s how to decide. The laundry landscape has changed since our moms first taught us the ropes, so some of their advice may not be as useful today. I used to rarely wash anything in cold water because my mom said it wouldn't get as clean, but today's detergents are much more effective than the ones she used, and many do work well in cold water! So how do we decide whether to wash our laundry in hot, warm, or cold water? Here are a few guidelines that can help: Use cold water… for most of your wash loads. It’s the most energy efficient (and thus cost effective) option, and will extend the life of your clothes and linens by preventing warping, shrinking, and unnecessary wear. Use warm water… for items that are dirtier than average and dark in color. This will ensure they get clean while helping to minimize potential fading. Use hot water… for items that are heavily soiled and light (or white) in color. You should also use hot water for anything that needs to be sanitized, like cloth diapers or clothing/bedding used by someone who's sick. BEAUTY Steer Clear Of This Calamine Lotion Trend [A photo of calamine lotion.]( Social media can be a source of useful, creative beauty tips, but some trends are just bad advice. As someone who loves finding creative new ways to use things, I would never discourage anyone from trying something new. But a recent beauty trend making the rounds on TikTok has dermatologists sounding the alarm, and it’s a good reminder to us all to be smart about what we slather on our faces! After seeing the trend on TikTok, women have been using calamine lotion as a primer before putting on their makeup. The pink liquid, which is sold in pharmacies to treat itchy skin conditions, supposedly helps to dry out oily skin and keep makeup in place, according to some of the posts that helped make this trend popular. But some dermatologists on TikTok are trying to discourage their followers from doing this, or at least from doing it regularly. Calamine lotion has an astringent effect that can mattify oily skin, but it's meant to harden the surface of your skin to protect it as it heals. If used frequently, it can be seriously drying and worsen skin irritation. So when it comes to priming your skin for makeup, stick with a real primer! Not only will it be better for your skin, but it will leave a bottle of calamine lotion on the shelf for someone who really needs it. WHAT IN THE WORLD WIDE WEB Guerilla Gardening [A GIF of a TikTok video of guerilla gardening.]( [This article from CBS News]( introduced me to a type of gardening I’d never heard of before: “guerilla gardening.” The story centered on a San Francisco couple who sow seeds for native wildflowers in neglected planters, dirt patches, and other areas around the city. The couple’s efforts gained national attention a few months ago when one of the videos they posted on TikTok ([@sfinbloom]() went viral. The video shows the couple and their friends cruising around San Francisco, using modified water guns and shaker jars to dispense seeds across the urban landscape. I'm intrigued by this idea as a means of supporting pollinators. I’ve made an effort to plant more native, pollinator-friendly plants in my yard over the past few years, so I do think there are benefits to filling barren dirt patches with sources of nectar and pollen. However, the practice of guerilla gardening can also be illegal. It’s against the law to trespass on private property, though aspiring seed-sowers could always ask the owner’s permission first. But I imagine that for many guerilla gardeners, breaking the rules is part of the appeal—plant first, ask questions later. What do you think? A FEW MORE THINGS...
