PLUS: The best way to clean your stovetop, reflections on memorable family road trips, and more. PLUS: The best way to clean your stovetop, reflections on memorable family road trips, and more. July 29, 2022 [View Online]( TOGETHER WITH [Hiya]( Good morning! We all have treats we remember fondly from our childhoods, and one of mine is peanut butter bars. In Today’s Good Thing, I’m sharing my trusty, no-bake, foolproof recipe so you and your family can indulge in this classic childhood treat too. And speaking of nostalgia... call your favorite seat in the car, because we're talking about road trips in a new Remember When. Cruise down memory lane with me below. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING These Easy Peanut Butter Bars Are Good For The Soul [Photos of Jillee eating peanut butter bars.]( I’ve been making this recipe since I was a young girl, and it’s still one of my all-time favorites. It’s officially hot enough outside that I’ve been avoiding using the oven, which inspired me to revisit one of my favorite no-bake desserts: peanut butter bars. But make no mistake, these aren’t just a summertime treat for me—this recipe and I go way, way back! Not only was it one of the first recipes I mastered as a young girl, but I took it with me when I went off to college at BYU. My roommate Diana and I may not have had a kitchen in freshmen dorm room, but we could still make peanut butter bars—what else did we need? I had a little electric hot pot we would use to melt the butter for the bottom layer, and to melt the chocolate for the top layer. In our impatience to eat them, we would set them on our windowsill and let the frigid winter weather speed things along. Even now, eating these peanut butter bars is every bit as delightful as it was when I was a girl. Reconnecting with that version of myself—my inner child—helps remind me of the importance of making time for simple pleasures. Adults need joy in their lives too! So check out the recipe at the link below and treat yourself to a batch in the coming days. With just 5 ingredients and a few minutes of effort, you’ll be enjoying a slice of delicious nostalgia in no time. But when charred food residue builds up in them, the pans absorb heat and make your stove less efficient. So you can help keep your utility costs lower just by keeping your burner pans clean! (How, you ask? See below!) WEEKEND CLEANING CHALLENGE Clean Your Stovetop [Photos of a glass cooktop being cleaned.]( Take some time this weekend to rid your stovetop of oil splatters and spilled food. If you’re like me, you do the majority of your cooking on your stovetop, and it shows. Between all the grease, drips, and spills, stovetops get subjected to a lot of messes. But they won’t be messy for much longer, because we’ll be cleaning them up this weekend! If your stove has gas or electric burners: Remove any burner covers or drip pans, then use an all-purpose cleaner to clean the stove surface. Pour a splash of ammonia into a large ziplock bag, then place one or more dirty stove parts inside and seal it. Repeat until all the parts are sealed in bags, then leave them overnight. In the morning, remove the stove parts from the bag (avoiding inhaling any ammonia fumes) and use warm, soapy water to wash the parts clean. For stubborn grime, a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and a little elbow grease should take care of it. [See the full tutorial ➜]( If your cooktop is glass or ceramic: There are a couple of options for cleaning a smooth cooktop. As far as store-bought cleaners go, [Bar Keepers Friend Cooktop Cleaner]( works like a charm. Just apply it with a damp sponge, let it sit for a minute, then wipe it off and rinse the surface thoroughly. For a DIY approach, spray your stovetop with white vinegar, then sprinkle baking soda over the wet surface and let it fizz up. Then dampen a towel with warm, soapy water, lay it over the baking soda, and let it sit for 15 minutes. Wipe clean using vinegar and a clean cloth, then buff with a microfiber cloth until shiny. UNUSUAL USES 3 Useful Things You Can Do With A Bar Of Soap [Photos of various uses for soap.]( Even if you prefer body wash, these 3 tips are reason enough to keep bar soap on hand. 1. Keep Fingernails Clean. Before working in the yard or garden, scrape your fingernails over a bar of soap and leave the soap wedged under your nails. The soap will keep dirt out, and when you clean your hands afterward, the soap will wash away easily. 2. Deodorize Smelly Shoes. Soap is porous enough that it can absorb and eliminate odors. Use this to your advantage with a pair of smelly shoes by placing a small bar of soap (hotel soap works perfectly for this) into each shoe and leaving it overnight. They’ll smell much fresher in the morning. 3. Mark Fabric. Use a bar of soap to mark fabric when you’re working on sewing projects. Not only will it wash right out, but it may even save you a trip to the craft store for a special fabric pencil too. REMEMBER WHEN Family Road Trips [A photo of Jillee and her siblings on a ski trip.]( My family went on plenty of road trips during school breaks when I was a kid. In the summer, we usually drove to Utah to see relatives and visit one of the national parks, and I even remember a few winter ski trips where we went up to Mammoth Mountain near Yosemite. Looking back, there are so many aspects of those trips that would be strange or foreign to my own kids. Here are some of the things I remember about hitting the road back in the day: • The Station Wagon. The 6 of us kids just barely fit into the back rows of our station wagon. My siblings constantly fought about who got to sit in the rear-facing third row seats. • Not Wearing Seat Belts. The car had seat belts, but we rarely wore them. California didn’t pass a law mandating them until 1986, so we roamed all over the car and took naps on the floor. • No A/C. The only real way to avoid getting slow-roasted in the back of a car on your way through the desert was to crack the windows a few inches. The breeze sort of helped. • Car Games. When radio static got old, our entertainment options were limited. We would read the books or comics we brought, or play the always popular (and always painful) [“slug bug” game](. • Rest Stops. When we got hungry, we would pull over at the nearest rest stop, convene around a picnic table, and Mom would pull out sandwiches. Drive-thrus and travel centers? We wish! A FEW MORE THINGS... Food Of The Day: I have to assume that if Garfield had a favorite day of the year, it would be July 29, AKA National Lasagna Day. If you’re feeling ambitious, this is your chance to attempt an [authentic, scratch-made lasagna](. The less ambitious have plenty of easy alternatives to choose from, like [mini lasagnas](, [5-minute lasagna](, or [lasagna soup](.
