July 21, 2022 [View Online]( TOGETHER WITH [Chartr]( Good morning! The idea I’m sharing with you in Today’s Good Thing could be filed under “things I wish I’d known when I was feeding 4 hungry kids.” It’s an easy way to make omelets fluffier and more filling too—find out what the secret ingredient is below. Also in today’s newsletter, OGT reader Shannon is sharing a laundry tip that can speed up drying times. If your dryer tends to heat up your house, this tip could be a life-saver in this heat! Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING The Secret Behind Those Extra Fluffy Omelets At IHOP [Photos of Jillee eating on omelet.]( This rather ingenious addition makes for lighter omelets that look great and taste great too. I've never been one who enjoys eating a lot at breakfast time. But Dave loves IHOP and other breakfast joints, so we do eat at them from time to time. After having heard some positive comments about IHOP’s omelets, I decided to do some digging to find out what made them so special. I figured if I could replicate that omelet for Dave at home, I could save us the hour-long round trip to the nearest IHOP, which was all the reason I needed! Luckily, I was able to uncover the secret ingredient they use in their omelets at IHOP, and I also learned how to cook and roll them the same way they do too. Armed with these simple tips, it was easy to make an omelet that any diner would be proud to serve! I’ve got all the details for you, including the copycat recipe and the additional tips, at the link below. So give it a try—I would happily eat one of these omelets any time (though I’d still prefer to have mine for lunch!) A Clever Hack For Freshening Small Spaces [Photos of felt pads being used as mini diffusers.]( Keep everything from laundry hampers to trash cans smelling fresh as a daisy. Diffusing essential oils is an easy way to freshen up the air around the house, but wouldn’t it be nice if there were a way to apply the same principle to freshen up smaller areas around the house? Well good news—there is! And not only is it easy to do, but it’s especially useful for smelly areas like the inside of your trash can or dirty laundry hamper. Just take one of those [adhesive felt pads]( that go on the bottoms of chair legs to protect floors, and stick it wherever you could use some extra freshness. Then add a drop or two of your favorite [essential oil]( to the felt pad to create a “mini diffuser” you can refresh as needed! You can do this in your laundry room, closet, diaper pail, gym bag, or anywhere else with a tendency for smelliness. TOGETHER WITH CHARTR Visual Learner? You’ll Love This Informative Resource If you love a good infographic, this daily newsletter is about to become your new favorite news source! Maybe it stems from my background in journalism, but I am a big believer in using hard data to better understand the world—and to drive home a point! Instead of reading a lengthy article or difficult-to-understand study, I’ve found I understand hard data best when I can see it, which is why I’m so glad I found [Chartr](. Their visual newsletter is packed with bite-sized charts (bar charts, line graphs, and scatterplots, oh my!) and easy-to-remember insights on business, tech, entertainment and society. SWAP THAT 🔄 FOR THIS From Slow Cooker To Multi-Cooker [A photo of an Instant Pot and a slow cooker.]( Slow cookers have their advantages, but if space is an issue, a multi-cooker may be the smarter choice. While most Instant Pot users, myself included, primarily use it as a pressure cooker, it can do a lot of other things too. (They don’t call it a multi-cooker for nothing!) One of the many useful programs that an Instant Pot offers is Slow Cook. It works exactly like a crockpot does, making it possible to do “low and slow” cooking over the course of several hours. The ability to streamline your collection of small appliances is one of the best things about owning an Instant Pot, in my opinion. Instead of having multiple small appliances that all do one thing, you can have one small appliance that does it all! To get the best results from the Instant Pot’s Slow Cook function, I recommend getting a [glass lid]( that fits your model. Just like a slow cooker lid, it vents some of the steam during cooking rather than sealing like the standard Instant Pot lid does. (The glass lid is also handy for avoiding splatters when using the Sauté function!) JILLEE'S PICK Gardening Tips From Scott Head [An image of a laptop screen displaying the Black Gumbo Southern Gardening YouTube channel.]( Gardening is something you can pick up on your own, but it's a lot easier when you have someone to show you the ropes. Plants may technically only need soil, water, and air to grow, but it gets more complicated when you’re trying to grow specific plants in a controlled environment. One “teacher” I’ve been learning a lot from lately is Scott Head, the man behind the [Black Gumbo Southern Gardening]( channel on YouTube. He lives in coastal Texas (zone 9a), and while I live in a very different climate than he does (zone 5b), a lot of his tips and advice can benefit any backyard gardener. I was particularly interested in [Scott's video about reusing potting soil](. I had always assumed potting soil was pretty much depleted after the first season, so it was pretty revelatory for me. I’m glad to know how to get more out of my soil now, and I'm looking forward to learning more from Scott's videos! [See Black Gumbo Southern Gardening on YouTube ➜]( YOUR ONE GOOD THING To Dry Laundry Faster, Add A Towel Shannon B. from North Carolina has a great tip for drying laundry faster: "To shorten dryer time, toss a dry towel into the dryer with your wet clothes. This cuts my drying time way down, especially on larger loads of denim and comforters." A towel may be the most useful item you can carry as an [interstellar hitchhiker](, but as Shannon's tip shows us, they can be pretty dang useful here on Earth too, especially if you're looking to dry your laundry faster. Whether or not the towel will dry by the time the rest of the load does depends on the load size, fabric types, and other factors. When I add a towel to my dryer loads, it's usually still a bit damp at the end, but I just toss it over a rack and let it air dry. It’s a great time saver! Have a great tip or trick of your own?
