July 12, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! How serendipitous is it that on National Simplicity Day, we're focusing on decluttering in Today’s Good Thing? (The correct answer is “very,” because I didn’t know National Simplicity Day was even a thing before writing this newsletter—learn more in A Few More Things!) Speaking of simplicity, in Tech Tip Tuesday I'm sharing what I hope will be a simple yet informative introduction to the cloud. If you’ve ever wondered what the cloud is and whether you should or shouldn’t use it, you'll find out shortly! Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING The Most Useful List For People With Too Much Stuff [Photos of files, towels, electronics, and toiletries.]( Know you need to declutter but aren't sure where to start? These 30 suggestions will help. For me, the hardest part of decluttering is often just getting started. When clutter is spread out across the house rather than concentrated in one area, it can be hard to know where to begin, but what I have to share today can help make that decision easier. To help jump-start your declutter efforts and get you closer to reaping the rewards of a tidier home, I’ve put together a list of 30 things you can get rid of today to make some major headway. Many of the items on the list will be painless to part with—like things that don’t work or that you have too many of—and you might even wonder why you didn’t ditch them sooner. And for items that are still in good shape, “get rid of” doesn’t necessarily have to mean “throw away.” Whether you end up recycling, donating, selling, or giving away the stuff on this list, there’s no doubt you’ll free up some valuable storage space and leave your home looking less chaotic. Table salt TECH TIP TUESDAY A Beginner's Guide To The Cloud [An image representing files in the cloud.]( A recent poll showed that there’s a lot of confusion about the cloud, so let’s start with the basics. "The cloud" refers to software and services that run on the internet. The term differentiates them from software and services that run "locally" on your computer or phone, like software you’ve downloaded or programs that came pre-installed on your device. Most cloud services—including popular ones like Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, and even Netflix—can be accessed through a web browser, which means you can access them on any device with an internet connection. The cloud is what makes it possible to create a Google Doc on your computer at work, then continue working on the same document on your home computer. An advantage of cloud storage services, such as Google Photos and Dropbox, is that the data you store in the cloud doesn't take up storage space on your computer or phone. That means if your phone or laptop storage was close to maxed out, you could upload some files to the cloud and free up space on your device. One downside to the cloud is that it's not very useful without an active internet connection. If your Wi-Fi goes down, you won't have access to cloud services until it’s fixed, and cloud services can have outages too. Another potential downside is security—while the cloud has security measures in place that protect your data, there's always more risk when storing data online versus on your device. We’ll look at other aspects of the cloud in future newsletters, so keep an eye out for that! COOKING Caesar Salad, Hold The Fork [A photo of a ]( Salad without a fork? You better believe it—here’s a caesar salad you can enjoy at your leisure. I tend to be more of a leisurely eater, especially compared to other members of the Nystul clan. It’s only a problem with foods like caesar salad, which begins to lose its structural integrity as soon as it’s dressed and tossed. So what’s a slow-eating salad lover to do? Enter the forkless caesar salad, one of my personal favorite lunches. The dressing is easy to make thanks to anchovy paste, which you can find near canned tuna at the store, and the lettuce stays crunchy because you dip it instead of dressing it. Give it a try and let me know how you like it! Here’s how to make it: To make the dressing, whisk together 1 teaspoon of minced garlic, 1 1/2 teaspoon of anchovy paste, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 1/2 teaspoons dijon mustard, 2-3 tablespoons of lemon juice, and 1 cup of mayonnaise. Stir in 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Wash and trim hearts of romaine lettuce and separate it into individual leaves. Dip the leaves into the dressing, add a couple croutons, and enjoy! In order to mix it up and keep things interesting, I’ve decided to intersperse them with some contemporary bestsellers that I never got around to reading. One I finished reading recently is [The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini](, a novel set in 1970s Afghanistan about a young boy and his friend growing up in Kabul. I doubt I can add anything new to the conversation about this book—it was published 19 years ago, after all—but I can at least offer my own feelings and impressions. One aspect of the story that I know will stay with me is the idea that while neither life nor people are perfect, redemption is always possible for those who are willing to put in the work. That isn’t to say the story of Amir, Hassan, and their embattled country doesn't have deeply sad or even horrific moments. But it provides an intimate and inspiring look into the inner life of someone struggling with their mistakes, and that’s part of why this story will stay with me for a long time to come. I’m glad I finally took the time to read this book, and if you haven't had the chance yet, I think you will be too. [See The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini on Amazon ➜]( A FEW MORE THINGS... Keep It Simple: Today is National Simplicity Day, observed on the birthday of [Henry David Thoreau]( (born July 12, 1817), the transcendentalist writer who was a fervent believer in simple living. But you don't have to spend two years in a cabin in the woods to live simply—slowing down, spending time outdoors, and reading books are all great ways to bring more simplicity into your life.
