Ironing [Photos of Jillee using a steamer and an iron.]( Understanding how steaming and ironing differ is key to knowing which one to use. Both clothing steamers and irons use heat and moisture to rid fabric of wrinkles, which can make them seem like interchangeable options. But there is a key difference between steaming and ironing that can help you determine which one to use when: pressure. The pressure comes from the weight of the iron, which helps to physically flatten the fabric while the heat relaxes the wrinkles. This combination works wonders on many fabrics, and it’s the secret to getting crisp creases, cuffs, pleats, and hems. Not every fabric can take the pressure, however (or the heat, for that matter). Velvet and corduroy have a nap that can get crushed by the pressure of an iron. Also, irons can be too hot for some synthetic and delicate fabrics, and may cause them to melt or warp. Steaming wrinkles our of these fabrics is a much safer alternative. But many fabrics do hold up well to ironing, especially heavier, more durable ones like cotton, linen, denim, and canvas. It would take ages to get wrinkles out of these fabrics using a steamer, but an iron makes short work of them! BEAUTY 6 Alternative Uses For Unwanted Beauty Products [Photos of a bra being washed and someone applying lotion to their hands.]( Tried a new product that didn't work out? Put it to good use with these ideas. Between your skin and hair's unique characteristics and your personal preferences, you're bound to encounter products you don’t like (or that don't like you) from time to time. While it's likely to lead to some buyer’s remorse, those beauty “lemons” don’t have to go to waste! Here are some ideas for turning your lemons into lemonade: 1. Bubble Bath & Shampoo. You may not want them in your bathtub or hair, but they can still be useful for hand washing delicate clothing like lingerie or cashmere sweaters. 2. Self-Tanner. Not the right shade or finish? Mix it with a bit of moisturizer and apply it to your face for a subtle glow. 3. Moisturizer & Eye Cream. Anything that's safe enough for your face and eyes can be used on your hands, feet, and body too. 4. Facial Scrub. If a scrub doesn't agree with your skin or is too harsh, use it to exfoliate your feet instead, or use it to remove dead skin before shaving for extra smooth skin. 5. Perfume. If you have a perfume you don't want to wear, but don't find off-putting, repurpose it as a fancy air freshener spray. 6. Nail Polish. Nail polish doesn’t look how you imagined it would? Use unwanted nail polishes to color-code your door keys or medication bottles. WHAT IN THE WORLD WIDE WEB Internet Activity In Numbers [A GIF of a laptop screen displaying the live counters on Internet Live Stats.]( We know that more and more people around the world gain access to the internet on a daily basis, but that’s about as specific as most of us can be. It’s hard to visualize how many people are online these days, let alone the number of websites they’re creating, emails they’re sending, and tweets they’re... well, tweeting! Luckily, we don’t have to go far to find out, because the information is readily available on [Internet Live Stats](. This website is part of the Real Time Statistics Project, a collaborative effort by a group of developers and researchers who want to make statistics in thought-provoking formats more widely available. And that’s exactly what they’ve done with Internet Live Stats. The site displays live statistics about internet usage based on data published by global authorities. But the stats aren't shown as static figures—they're shown as real numbers that increase in real time according to the data. Simply put, the counters on Internet Live Stats can give us a better idea of just how much activity is happening online. Hovering over the counters offers other options too, like visualizing all [1,172 Instagram posts]( that go up every second, or watching the number of websites on the internet ([1.9 billion or so]() grow in real time.
