While our clothes will eventually let us know it’s time to wash them by the way they look or smell, the other fabrics in our homes are easier to overlook. We may not take them outside or get them all sweaty, but the same dust and dirt that settles on our floors and furniture falls on our fabric and upholstery too. Here’s how to do it: The safest way to clean any fabric item is to follow the care instructions printed on its tag. If the item doesn't have a tag or the tag was removed at some point, not to worry! Follow these guidelines to safely wash just about anything: • Wash the item alone or with similar colors. • Select a short, gentle cycle and use cold water. • Use a small amount of your normal laundry detergent to avoid overdoing it. • Avoid the use of fabric softener, which can leave a dirt-attracting residue on synthetic fibers. • To dry it, either hang it up to air dry, or dry it on low heat until it's almost dry, then hang it up to dry completely.
