PLUS: A tech tip that makes Siri easier to use, my favorite side to bring to any barbecue, and more. June 7, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! Duct tape may have more notoriety, but when it comes to household applications, it’s hard to beat painter’s tape. In Today’s Good Thing, I’m sharing 9 of the most practical uses for painter’s tape that just might make it your new favorite adhesive. And in a new Tech Tip Tuesday, you’ll find a quick tip that can improve the experience of calling your family. (Unfortunately for some, it only applies to placing the call—the conversation component is still up to you!) Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 9 Reasons Why Painter's Tape Is The New Duct Tape [Photos of various uses for painter's tape.]( From picking up pet hair to planning an art wall, this tape is handy for a lot more than painting. When it comes to do-it-all adhesive materials, duct tape is considered the gold standard. While it certainly comes in handy for making slapdash repairs, it’s not a great choice if you’re hoping to remove the tape later. (Removing the tape itself is difficult enough, let alone the sticky residue it leaves behind!) But there is a tape that’s both moderately strong and easy to remove: painter’s tape. These attributes make painter’s tape highly useful around the house—even more useful, dare I say, than duct tape! Classic blue painter’s tape is also both relatively inexpensive and easy to tear, which is why I always reach for it when I need to put a temporary label on something, like boxes of seasonal clothing. After reflecting on the various ways I like to use painter’s tape around the house, I was inspired to share my best ideas with you today. I ended up with a list of 9 surprising and practical ways you can put that humble blue tape to good use. From decorating your home to keeping your favorite snacks fresh, these tips make a strong case for painter’s tape as the most useful household adhesive. I never really understood why my parents were so strict about us never using their first names until I became “Mom” to my own kids. I may be both Mom and Jill, but they’re distinct enough identities that it feels strange and unwelcome when those lines get blurred. So I was very pleased when I found out there was a way to teach Siri (and other voice assistants—more on that shortly) that when I say “Mom,” I mean “Carole Warner.” All I had to do was say “Hey Siri, Carole Warner is my mom.” You can do the same for your dad, husband, daughter, and so on. Setting up this feature has definitely made sending a text or making a call via Siri feel a lot more natural than it did before. Give it a try and let me know how you like it! COOKING Five-Bean Hotdish, The Perfect Side For Barbecues [Photos of five-bean hotdish.]( My mother-in-law’s baked bean casserole makes an ideal side for smoked meats, burgers, and more. Of all the recipes that Dave’s mother Dorothy has given me over the years, few are as quintessentially Upper Midwestern as her five-bean hotdish. This bean casserole is reminiscent of baked beans or chili, but with the sweet and tangy flavor of a good barbecue sauce. It’s not just a summertime staple in the Nystul household—it’s been a hit at pretty much every cookout or potluck I’ve brought it to! Whether you’re looking for the perfect side for an upcoming barbecue or want to try something new the next time you grill burgers, this dish won’t disappoint. Here’s how to make it: Cut 1/2 pound of bacon into 1" pieces, then place them in a large skillet with 1 pound of ground beef and 1 diced medium white onion. Cook the bacon, beef, and onion over medium-high heat until the meats are cooked through, then drain the mixture and transfer it to a large roasting pan. Next, you'll need one 15-ounce can of each of the following: green beans, lima beans, kidney beans, yellow wax beans, and pork and beans. Drain all of the cans except the pork and beans, then rinse the lima beans and kidney beans. Add all the canned beans to the roasting pan. To the roaster, add 2 cups of ketchup, 2 cups of brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of vinegar (whichever kind you like), and 1 teaspoon of salt. Use a large spoon to stir all the ingredients together until well combined, then cover the roaster with a lid and bake at 350°F for 60 minutes. When I realized I hadn’t yet read her debut novel [The House of Mirth](, I put it on my “books to read” list at once. As it turns out, I was not fully prepared for The House of Mirth to be so light on mirth. The story begins in a charming and amusing fashion, as the protagonist Lily Bart navigates the mores of upper class society. In her late twenties and still unmarried, Lily is torn between her need to marry rich and her desire to marry for love. But Wharton’s story has a darker side to it. Lily may be a beautiful socialite, but she’s also flawed and messy, not quite saint or sinner. You can’t help but feel for her, especially as those around her show a much greater interest in maintaining their own social standings than in being decent human beings. I can't stop thinking about Lily Bart and her fate, and there’s no surer hallmark of a well-written character. While The House of Mirth may lack mirth, it has no shortage of impact.
