I’ve never gotten used to wearing an apron when I cook dinner, and that has given me a lot of experience with oil stains (albeit at the expense of my shirts). I eventually nailed down a way to reliably remove oil stains from clothing, and I’m breaking it down for you in Today’s Good Thing. How To Make Oil Stains Disappear From Clothes [Photos of an oil stain being treated, and the stain before and after it was treated.]( Oily, greasy stains can seem untouchable, but all you need are the right tools and approach. Of the common spills and splatters we get on our clothes, some stains require little to no effort to remove... and then there are oil stains. Cooking oil, pizza grease, and other oily stains can be so persistent that some consider them a death sentence for clothes. Luckily, that isn't actually the case. True, oil stains do require a different approach because their resistance to water makes them difficult to dissolve. But with the right tools, removing oil stains is not only possible, but it's a relatively straightforward process too. Here’s how to do it: Start by slipping a piece of cardboard behind the stain—it's an easy way to ensure the oil won't bleed onto another part of the fabric. With the cardboard in place, blot the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb any excess oil. Next, pour enough hydrogen peroxide on the stain to saturate it, then add a couple of drops of dish soap and sprinkle some baking soda on top. Use an old toothbrush or a small scrub brush to scrub the ingredients into the fabric and form a sudsy paste. Leave the garment for 30 minutes to an hour to allow time for the ingredients to break down the oil, then wash the garment. Check it to see if the stain is gone — (if the damp fabric makes it hard to tell, hang it to dry for a while and check back later.) Repeat the process if necessary to remove any remaining traces of the stain. Will This Bleach Colored Clothes? This is the most frequent question I'm asked about this method. Use A Cooling Rack To Dice An Avocado [A photo of a halved avocado on a cooling rack over a bowl.]( With this clever trick, you can quickly dice an avocado without the risk of bodily injury. Traditionally, you cut up avocado by holding it in one hand and using a knife to slice or dice the flesh while it's still in the skin. It works well enough, but unless the avocado has a very tough skin, you run the risk of slicing right through it and cutting your palm. (Ouch!) But there’s another way to dice avocado, and not only is it faster, but there’s no risk of slicing your hand open while doing it. And interestingly enough, it involves a cooling rack. Set a cooling rack over a bowl, then halve an avocado and remove the pit. Place the flesh of the avocado against the rack and press down on it firmly, and the flesh will get “diced” as you push it through the rack. How clever is that? SWAP THAT 🔄 FOR THIS Frozen Yogurt Pops, A Superior Summer Treat [Photos of Jillee eating a frozen yogurt pop.]( Why settle for sugary popsicles when you can have a creamy frozen yogurt pop instead? They might be little more than frozen yogurt on a stick, but frozen yogurt pops are one of my favorite summer treats. (To be clear, the yogurt I'm talking about is the kind you eat with granola, rather than "fro-yo" per se.) They're more satiating than any popsicle and ridiculously easy to make too. You only need a popsicle stick and a container of yogurt to do it! It's easiest to use yogurt that comes in containers with straight sides, or whose opening is larger than the base. I often use Activia yogurt for that reason. (Yoplait doesn't work as well for this because the base is larger than the opening, meaning you would have to cut the container open to get the frozen pop out.) Once you have your sticks and yogurt, the process is simple—just stick a popsicle stick through the lid and freeze. Once the yogurt is frozen solid, you can slide the pop out and enjoy. (Running the container under warm water for a few seconds helps!) Frozen yogurt pops are tasty, satisfying, a bit indulgent, and on a hot summer day, there’s no better way to beat the heat. Everyone could choose the fillings they liked, and since the messy stuff is piled into the cone, you could easily eat them outside or anywhere else. But after looking into it, I'm sad to report that I can't find a single place online (outside of eBay, at least) where the Pizzacraft Grilled Pizza Cone Set shown in the Brit + Co tutorial is in stock—did I arrive too late to the pizza cone party? However, I think the most crucial pieces—the molds for forming and baking the cones and the stands for filling them—wouldn’t be hard to replicate with other items. You could use [pastry cones]( to form and bake the dough, and a [cupcake cone baking rack]( to fill the cones and melt the cheese. Our kitchen only has four small drawers, so I stick hooks on whatever I can, including the back part of the stove and behind the burners between the dials, and use them to hang measuring spoons and other small things. The sides of the microwave hold scissors, cookie scoops, scrapers and a can opener." This is a smart and efficient way to get around the constraints of limited kitchen storage, so thank you for sharing it with us, Virginia! It’s also a solution that anyone can use, given the number of metallic, magnet-friendly surfaces in most kitchens and the damage-free nature of the magnets themselves. My only concern would be whether the magnet hooks would stay put, as I’ve had weak fridge magnets in the past that drove me nuts with the way they would slowly slide down the door.
