May 27, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! We may not like to talk about it, but we all know what goes on in the bathroom and what kind of smells can linger there as a result. Fortunately, Today’s Good Thing features an effective solution to toilet odors you can easily whip up at home. And in a new Remember When, I’m reminiscing about my time in the Girl Scouts. I learned a lot of valuable skills as a scout, but it also gave me unrealistic expectations about meetings including free ice cream. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING The Most Useful Thing You Can Add To Your Bathroom [Photos of Jillee's No. 2 Toilet Odor Spray.]( This quick and easy DIY stops unpleasant odors in their tracks for a fresher bathroom for all. Like many of the ideas I’ve shared over the years, the inspiration for the project I'm sharing today arrived in the form of an email from an OGT reader. They asked if I knew of any homemade versions of a product called “Poo-Pourri,” but at that point I’d never heard of it. After looking it up, I learned it’s a spray for controlling unpleasant bathroom odors, and that it mainly consists of essential oils. I quickly felt confident that I could come up with an equally effective DIY version and went to work creating it. When I was satisfied with my new “No. 2 Spray,” I gave a bottle to a friend who had offered to put it in the men’s bathroom at his office. I gave him the rundown to pass along—spray it into the toilet bowl 3-4 times before you “go” to create an odor-trapping barrier on the surface of the water. When I heard back a week or two later, my friend told me that several of the guys at his office now wanted their own bottles of my spray to use in their bathrooms at home. In terms of feedback for a toilet odor spray, there's really no higher praise! Bathroom odors may be a fact of life, but they can also be embarrassing. Adding a bottle of this DIY toilet odor spray to your bathroom is an easy way to improve the experience of everyone who uses it. Get the simple recipe and instructions below. Follow these steps to make sure your house is ready. Like many of you, I'll be having friends and family over during the holiday weekend, which means I need to get my house in a presentable state. And since I have food, yard work, and other things to worry about, I don’t have a lot of time to spend cleaning, and I’m sure many of you can relate! So this weekend, I thought we’d tackle some simple tasks that will help get our houses guest-ready in a hurry. Here’s what I suggest: 1. Tidy Up The Entryway. As the first part of your house that guests will see, a tidy entryway can make a good first impression. Sweep dirt and debris off the floor and make sure there’s room for your guests to store their shoes, jackets, and other personal items. 2. Freshen Up The Air. If your house smells nice, it will feel more welcoming overall. I often diffuse fresh-smelling essential oils like [Simple Clean]( when I have visitors coming over, and I often end up getting compliments about how nice my house smells. 3. Address Clutter. Our brains are programmed to notice when things are out of place, which means your guests are likely to notice any piles of clutter lying around. Clear away clutter before guests arrive—there’s no shame in simply stashing it out of sight. 4. Tidy Up The Bathroom. Your guests will likely need to use your bathroom at some point, so you’ll want to make sure it’s in good shape. Focus on wiping down the mirror, sink, and countertops, providing clean towels, and addressing the toilet if necessary. 5. Pick Up Pet Hair. If you have pets, spend a few minutes removing pet hair from the sofas and chairs your guests will be sitting on. Use a lint roller or rubber glove to pick up as much of the hair as you can—your guests and their clothes will thank you. UNUSUAL USES 3 Unexpected Things You Can Do With Flour [Photos of various uses for flour.]( You already use it in cooking and baking, but there are plenty of other things you can do with flour. 1. Repel Ants. If you spot ants around your house, sprinkle a line of flour in the area to help keep them at bay. Ants don’t like the taste or powdery feel of flour, and will generally avoid it if they can. 2. Clean Playing Cards. Toss a deck of grimy playing cards in a ziplock bag with a handful of flour, seal it, and give it a good shake. The flour will absorb oily residues and grime off the surface of the cards, and after you remove them and wipe them off with a clean cloth, they’ll be in much better shape. 3. Ripen Avocados. If you have a rock-hard avocado that’s taking its sweet time to ripen, you can use flour to help speed up the process. Place the avocado in a paper bag, cover it in flour, then close the bag and leave it on your countertop for 24 hours or so. After that, your avocado should be ready to use. REMEMBER WHEN 5 Things Every Girl Scout Will Remember [A photo of Girl Scout Daisies in blue vests.]( When my mom enrolled me in Girl Scouts when I was 8 years old, I started as a Brownie, the youngest group back in those days. When I turned 11, I vividly remember when I "flew up" or "bridged" to Junior level—we got to walk over an actual wooden bridge, which felt very special and important. My first troop was my first sisterhood, and I have a lot of fond memories of my time as a Girl Scout. If you were a scout, I bet you remember these things too: 1. Getting A New Badge. One of the most exciting aspects of scouting was earning new badges. They made it fun to learn and do new things, whether it was first aid, cooking, or reading, and the feeling of putting a new badge on your sash was unbeatable. 2. Getting A New Uniform. Speaking of sashes, getting a new sash or vest when you bridged to a new level was a big deal. Uniform colors varied by level, with Brownies wearing brown (of course), Juniors wearing green, and Cadettes and Seniors wearing khaki. 3. Reciting The Girl Scout Promise. If you were a Girl Scout, you can probably still recite the Promise by heart: On my honor, I will try: to serve God and my country, to help people at all times, and to live by the Girl Scout Law. 4. Singing The "Make New Friends" Song. I didn't even have to think about this one, which I guess means this song will forever be a part of me. "Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold." 5. Ice Cream Socials. I remember attending a number of ice cream socials as a scout. Whether after troop meetings or at open house events, I came to expect to see a table somewhere laden with ice cream and delicious toppings. (Those were the days!) A FEW MORE THINGS... Practice Sun Safety: Today is Don’t Fry Day, a campaign from the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention to raise awareness of sun safety on the Friday before Memorial Day. Practice sun safety this weekend by wearing sunscreen, reapplying it regularly, and seeking shade. Encourage others to do the same for #DontFryDay and throughout the summer.
