May 14, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! If you’re looking for ways to save money (and who isn’t, really?), shopping smarter at the grocery store is a great place to start. In Today’s Good Thing, you’ll learn about 7 of the steepest grocery store markups and their easy, money-saving alternatives. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 7 Big Markups To Steer Clear Of At The Store [Photos of bread, spices, and cereal.]( Grocery markups are a fact of life, but these ones can put a sizable dent in your budget. 1. Batteries. Batteries are often marked up as much as 70% because retailers know that most people buy them out of an immediate need. Instead, stock up on batteries before you need them by getting them at a warehouse store—you’ll save up to 40 cents per battery. 2. Produce. Most stores mark up produce by around 50-75% to offset losses from spoilage. But there’s always something on sale in the produce section, and since those sale items are usually in season, stocking up and freezing some for later can be a great way to save. 3. Pre-Cut Produce. Pre-cut produce can cost as much as three times the price of their whole counterparts in the produce section. You can save a lot of money just by cutting up whole fruits and veggies yourself once you get home. 4. Bottled Water. Bottled water costs hundreds of times more than tap water, so carry a reusable water bottle instead and refill it as needed. Even if you buy a water filtration pitcher or dispenser to improve the taste of your tap water, you’ll still save money in the long run. 5. Cereal. Breakfast cereals are marked up an average of 40%, but fortunately for all us cereal lovers, they frequently go on sale and it’s easy to find manufacturer’s coupons for them, so use them to stock up. Check out store brand/generic cereals too—they’re often just as tasty. 6. Baked Goods. The delicious aromas emanating from the bakery area of the store is awfully enticing, but the markup on the items they sell can be as high as 100%. You’ll save quite a bit by making those treats from a mix (or from scratch), and they’ll probably taste better too! 7. Spices. It always pains me to shell out $5 or more for a tiny bottle of a spice or seasoning. Buying spices in bulk at places like Sprouts, Winco, or Costco is often a lot cheaper, as is buying private label or generic spices.
