May 5, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! The more expensive something is, the more stressful it can be to shop for. But the 6 steps for shopping for big-ticket items in Today's Good Thing can help you stay stress-free by making the process easier from start to finish. And in a new Swap That For This, I’ll tell you about a makeup swap that’s ideal for summer. Find out which all-in-one product you may want to ditch your foundation for below! Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Buying Something Big? 6 Steps To Guide Your Search [Photos of Jillee shopping for beds on a phone and tablet.]( Find out how I go about shopping for and buying big-ticket items in 6 steps that can help you too. Shopping online for big-ticket items like furniture and major appliances may be less physically tiring than shopping at an enormous furniture or appliance store, but it's no less mentally tiring. No matter what you’re looking for, there may be hundreds of websites with thousands of different options to consider! This is an issue I've faced while researching a big-ticket purchase of my own—a new bed. We’ve had our current bulky wood bed for close to two decades now, so I’m more than ready to switch things up with a bed that's more in line with the rest of my decor. As I’ve been looking at options and using my go-to techniques for online shopping, it occurred to me that I haven't written anything specific on my blog about making big purchases. I don’t pretend to be an expert on buying big-ticket items, but do I know what’s helpful for me, and those things could be just as helpful to you! So today I'll be giving you an inside look at my approach to shopping for big-ticket items. I broke it down into 6 simple steps and explained how each helped in my search for a new bed, and how you can use them while researching big purchases of your own. Are you currently in the market for a big-ticket item? Are you interested in tips that can help you save time and money while shopping online? Either way, you won’t want to miss my guide to making big purchases below. Shine A Light On Broken Glass [A photo of someone using the flashlight on their phone to illuminate pieces of broken glass.]( Instead of crossing your fingers and hoping you swept up all the glass, use this tip to be sure. Whenever I break a glass in the kitchen or hear glass shatter in another room, I cross my fingers and hope there will only be a few large pieces to pick up. But it doesn't always work, and I occasionally have to sweep up dozens of tiny glass shards from all over the floor. After cleaning up an incident like this back when the kids were little, one of them cut their foot on a piece of glass I hadn’t managed to sweep up. I felt terrible about it, but our light-colored linoleum floors made those tiny shards next to impossible to see. If only I could go back in time and tell myself there’s an easier way to check for errant glass shards! Just turn off the lights and shine a flashlight around the area where you cleaned up the broken glass. Any bits of glass left on the floor will reflect the light, making them much easier to spot and pick up. SWAP THAT 🔄 FOR THIS Why Tinted Sunscreen Is Perfect For Summer [Photos of Jillee applying tinted sunscreen.]( Swap your foundation for a product that not only corrects, but moisturizes and protects skin too. At my esthetician’s suggestion, I replaced the liquid foundation I’d been using for years with a lightweight tinted sunscreen. I’m glad I took the leap, because not only do I enjoy the "lightness" of wearing fewer layers of makeup, but it's good to have sun protection at the center of my everyday routine, especially with summer on the way. My main concern when I first made the switch was that a tinted sunscreen wouldn’t provide enough coverage, but I eventually got used to having a lighter, more “natural” look. And on days when I do want a bit more coverage, I just add a bit of mineral powder foundation on top—easy! There are plenty of great tinted sunscreens out there, but I like the [Revision Intellishade Original Tinted Moisturizer SPF 45]( that my esthetician recommended. On top of offering better-than-average sun protection, it also moisturizes, conceals, and brightens skin too. Its $75 retail price is definitely not its most attractive feature, but I can usually find it on sale at one store or another. In fact, I just saw that it’s currently selling [for $17 on Walmart.com](, which is a real steal! JILLEE'S PICK Baked Potatoes As A Main Dish [Photos of baked potatoes.]( It seems most people tend to think of baked potatoes strictly as a side dish, but I beg to differ. With a few strategically chosen toppings, a “loaded” baked potato (or “loaded baker,” as they call them in the upper midwest) can be delicious and satiating as the star of a meal. I also take issue with characterizing potatoes as inherently unhealthy. Sure, they’re carbohydrate-rich, but they’re also a good source of nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin B6, and potassium. Plus, when you bake potatoes rather than boil or fry them, you preserve more of their nutrients along with the fiber in their skins. Here are some of my favorite ways to serve baked potatoes as a main dish: • Baked potato + seasoned ground beef + corn + black beans + cheddar • Baked potato + diced chicken + broccoli + cheddar • Baked potato + diced chicken + pesto + mozzarella • Baked potato + bacon + sour cream + chives Do you ever serve baked potatoes as a main dish? Do you have a favorite combination of toppings for baked potatoes that isn’t listed here? Reply to this email and tell me about it! YOUR ONE GOOD THING Locate Unfamiliar Items Before You Shop Suzie W. from Washington has a great time-saving shopping tip: "When I'm making my Walmart shopping list and there are items I need but don't buy often, I look them up online and jot down the aisle number where those items are stocked. This saves me time at the store." This is a great way to make grocery shopping more efficient regardless of where you shop, but I do see it being particularly useful at Walmart! I don’t always get groceries there, but when I do, I often find myself wandering up and down the aisles for ages trying to find those last few things on my list. But Suzie has it figured out with her “look it up online” method. Larger stores like Walmart often have an online shopping option, which makes it easy to search for an item and find out which aisle it’s in before you head out to shop there in person.
