May 3, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! The cleaning projects in Today’s Good Thing may seem like small potatoes compared to what you’d traditionally focus on during spring cleaning, but for relatively little effort, they can make a surprisingly big impact. Find out which 9 tasks you may want to add to your list below. And in a new Tech Tip Tuesday, we’ll explore a few of the more useful features you can use when writing in Google Docs. Whether you're easily distracted like me or you just need help getting started, these 3 features are worth checking out. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 9 Easy Cleaning Projects You'll Never Regret Doing [Photos of various cleaning projects.]( Adding these 9 less obvious projects to your spring cleaning to-do list will pay dividends all summer long. If you’ve been following the Weekend Cleaning Challenges over the past few weeks, then you and I have both been in spring cleaning mode as of late. I hope you’re enjoying your brighter surroundings and the fresh, renewed feeling of a clean home—that’s why we put in all this effort, after all! But not everything that could benefit from being cleaned is quite as obvious as, say, dirty window panes or a musty mattress. During a recent meeting with the OGT Team, someone happened to mention that it was becoming impossible to find anything in their collection of craft supplies. (I think we’ve all been in similar situations before, whether it was craft materials, gardening supplies, or something else!) That comment got me thinking about other less obvious projects that would be worth adding to my spring cleaning list. So I did some brainstorming and came up with 9 cleaning projects that, while often overlooked, can make a big impact if you take the time to do them. The best thing about the 9 projects on this list? None are particularly difficult, and I’m sure you could knock out a few of them in a single afternoon! Check out the entire list, along with tips to make each project quick and easy, at the link below. It’s hard to believe it was [almost a year ago]( that I wrote about the wonders of Google Docs in this segment. I think it’s time we revisit the subject and dive deeper into the various features of Google’s free word processor. Here are a few worth knowing about: 1. Think Out Loud With Voice Typing Some writers benefit from speaking their thoughts and ideas aloud and recording them prior to putting pen to paper (or fingers to keys). If that technique is useful to you or you want to try it, you can do it right in Google Docs—though you will have to use Google Chrome to access this feature. To use Voice Typing in Google Docs, select Tools in the menu and then click Voice Typing. Click the microphone to start recording and Google Docs will transcribe your speech onto the page. Click the microphone again to stop recording. 2. Write Without Distractions With Full Screen View If you’re anything like me when you're writing, your mind has a way of looking for literally anything else to focus on. One convenient source of distraction is formatting—when I’m stuck on something, suddenly everything from the font to the type of bullet points I’ve used are all wrong. (Funny how that happens!) But you can take that source of distraction off the table by viewing your document in the full screen view. Select View in the toolbar and then click Full Screen, and the toolbars and menus will disappear from the top of your document. To restore them, press Esc. 3. Skip Square One With Templates Blank documents can be intimidating, but you don’t have to start with one. Google Docs has a variety of templates that can give you a leg up on your project, whether you’re writing a resume, letter, report, or something else. To see all the templates, go to [docs.google.com]( and click on the Template Gallery near the top of the page. Learn more about these and other features at [Google Docs Editors Help](. COOKING Bacon, Egg, And Potato Breakfast Tacos [Photos of breakfast tacos.]( Stuck in a breakfast rut? Put a spin on eggs and bacon with these tasty breakfast tacos. Not only are tacos one of most versatile foods known to man, but they defy the laws of time too. Okay, so that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I do believe tacos make a great meal or snack at any time of the day. You can put my theory to the test by giving these tasty breakfast tacos a try—it’s almost Cinco de Mayo, after all! Here's how to make them: Roughly chop 4 slices of bacon and cook them in a skillet over medium-high heat until browned and crispy, about 4 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to remove the bacon to a paper towel, then cut 1 russet potato into cubes and add them to the hot bacon fat. Season the potatoes with salt and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until they're browned and cooked through, about 10-12 minutes. Whisk 2 eggs, then pour them into the skillet with the potatoes and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring constantly until the eggs are just set, about 1 minute. To serve, spoon the egg and potato mixture into warm corn tortillas and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese and the bacon pieces on top. (I'd add some salsa and chopped cilantro to the mix too, but to each their own!) [Middlemarch by George Eliot]( is a classic for a reason and I knew I would eventually be glad I persevered, so the fact that I finally managed to finish feels like a big accomplishment. The main “barrier to entry” I faced with this book was the ornate 19th century writing. It definitely took some getting used to (about 200 pages, give or take), but the further I read, the easier it got. The story is set in the 1830s in a small town in the English country called Middlemarch, and provides an unvarnished look into life among the upper and middle classes. Under the pen name George Eliot, Mary Ann Evans captured the nuances of relationships, gender roles, social class, and other aspects of 19th century English life. But for me, the highlight of the book was its large and vibrant cast of characters. By the time I finally finished (which took a while—it’s 800-900 pages depending on the version), I was so invested in the characters that I didn't want to part with them. If you pick this one up, my suggestion is to take your time and savor the journey!
