April 26, 2022 [View Online]( TOGETHER WITH [Outer]( Good morning! If you’re like me and have a few emery boards in a drawer somewhere that rarely see the light of day, you'll want to dig them out after reading Today's Good Thing. I'm sharing 11 surprising uses for emery boards besides filing rough nails. In a new Tech Tip Tuesday, I’ll tell you about a messaging app you might prefer to traditional texting. Whether you think texting takes too long, feels too impersonal, or you just don’t like it, find out which app you’ll want to download ASAP below. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Not Just For Nails! 11 Other Great Uses For Emery Boards [Photos of various uses for emery boards.]( Whether or not you use them to file your nails, there are plenty of other reasons to keep emery boards handy. 1. Sharpen Eyeliner. Going for a razor-sharp eyeliner look? Use an emery board to grind the tip of your pencil to a super fine point. You can also use an emery board to sharpen standard pencils and colored pencils if you can’t find your pencil sharpener. 2. Remove Pills From Sweaters. If your favorite shirt or sweater is pilling, you can lightly rub a nail file over the pills to remove them. (A pill shaver will get the job done a lot faster, but if yours is dead or you’re out of the house, this tip could prove useful in a pinch!) 3. Remove Glue Residue. Had a run in with super glue that's now stuck to your fingers? You can use a nail file to gently scrape off the excess glue and make the remaining residue easier to remove. Just be sure to stop filing before you reach your skin! 4. Soften Dry Heels. An emery board isn’t much different from a small heel file, so there’s no reason you couldn’t use one to slough dead skin off your heels. 5. Restore Rusty Tools. If your hand tools or gardening equipment have a few rust spots, an emery board can make a great little detail sander for rust removal. Once you’ve rubbed off the rust, apply a rust inhibitor to help prevent the rust from coming back. 6. Encourage Seeds. When you buy seeds for your garden, they are often coated in order to last longer. Using a nail file to scuff up the outside of larger seeds before planting them can remove some of that coating so that they can absorb more moisture and hopefully sprout sooner. While annuals tend to be fairly easy to grow, user error is always a possibility in the garden. (Scroll down to see the correct answer.) A. Use large pots B. Add fillers to the pot to make it lighter C. Drill holes into a pot that doesn’t have any D. Plant more than one type of flower in the same pot TECH TIP TUESDAY A Text-Free Way To Stay In Touch [An image of two smartphones displaying the Marco Polo app.]( For those who find texting tedious, there’s a better way to stay in touch with your loved ones. While text messaging is the preferred method of communication for many, it isn't everyone's cup of tea. If you’re not a particularly fast typist, typing out a detailed text message can take ages, and that's to say nothing of how easily texts can be misinterpreted either! But there's an alternative for keeping in touch with friends and family—video messaging on [Marco Polo](. This free app allows you to record and send short video messages to individuals or groups, which they can view and respond to at their leisure. Like a live video call, exchanging video messages with Marco Polo can feel more personal because you get to see people's faces and hear their voices. But unlike a FaceTime or Zoom call, it requires no scheduling or planning and can be used at your leisure. Concerned about video messages hogging your phone's storage space? Don't be—the app only keeps messages from the past 24 hours on your phone, and the rest are safely stored in the app’s cloud and can be rewatched anytime. You can [download Marco Polo for free]( in the iPhone and Android app stores. If you start using it, be sure to shoot me a reply to let me know how you like it! COOKING The One Condiment To Rule Them All [A photo of fries and a small jar of fry sauce.]( I’ll happily dip my fries in ketchup—if fry sauce isn’t an option. When we first moved to Utah from California when Erik and Britta were little, I assumed the burger joint in our new town that included “fry sauce” (a seasoned combination of ketchup and mayonnaise) with their fries was simply a bit quirky. But I soon came to realize fry sauce is a statewide obsession, and it wasn't long before I was firmly on Team Fry Sauce too. What sets it apart from other condiments is that it has a little bit of everything, flavor-wise—it's tangy, creamy, and sightly sweet all at once. Give it a try and let me know how you like it! Here’s how to make it: To a bowl, add 1 cup of mayonnaise, 1/2 cup of ketchup, and 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder and stir to combine. Then stir in 1 teaspoon of pickle juice at a time (up to 4 teaspoons total) to taste. (If you don't have pickle juice, try a splash of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice instead.) This is a very basic recipe, so feel free to make tweaks and follow your culinary intuition. Turn up the heat with a dash of hot sauce, use barbecue sauce instead of ketchup, or experiment with other seasonings—anything goes! Emotionally, it’s a huge relief to know I'm finally taking good care of my skin, and no longer neglecting it or treating it poorly. I had no doubt other mature women would love the Timeless by Jillee system as much as I do, but that hasn’t made it any less exciting to hear it “from the horse’s mouth.” Take a look at these reviews: • “60+ years enjoying the outdoors has done a number on my skin! But the Timeless system has already made a noticeable difference in my age spots and I love that it’s so easy. ANSWER B. Adding fillers to your pots (like empty containers, packing peanuts, etc.) may make them lighter, but it also cancels out the benefits of using a large pot in the first place.
