PLUS: Clearing the air about indoor air quality, how to safely donate to worthy causes, and more. PLUS: Clearing the air about indoor air quality, how to safely donate to worthy causes, and more. April 25, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! Conspiracy theorists may disagree, but not everything you haven’t heard about is being intentionally hushed up. Some things fly under the radar because they’re unfamiliar or not very flashy, and the useful tool I'll be telling you about in Today’s Good Thing is both (but not for long!) In a new Monday Motivation, I’m sharing some advice for dealing with negative people. Remembering you can always choose to protect your peace and happiness can make all the difference when others are trying to tear you down. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING This Special Tool Is One Of Europe's Best Kept Secrets [Photos of Jillee using a Danish dough whisk.]( Easy to use, easy to clean, does everything your go-to whisk isn’t quite right for—need I say more? When it comes to baking, Europe has already given a lot to the world—deliciously chewy Italian focaccia, flaky French pastries, buttery Scottish shortbread, and much, much more. But further north, another European nation famous for its pastries should be equally famous (in my opinion) for its game-changing mixing tool. That nation is Denmark, and the tool is the so-called Danish dough whisk. This unique utensil has proven itself invaluable in my own kitchen and made many tasks much simpler. But as useful as it is, this whisk remains relatively obscure outside of Europe, so I’ve taken it upon myself to spread the word far and wide. It’s not that the Danish dough whisk is better than a standard balloon whisk, per se. I actually think both have their place in your arsenal of kitchen utensils, because they both work well for different things. What makes the Danish dough whisk so unique is its three stacked coils. If you've only ever used balloon whisks, it can be difficult to imagine how these flat coils work in practice, and I think that’s one reason why this whisk hasn't been more widely adopted—it's hard to "get it" until you see it with your own eyes! But if you’re interested in a low-tech, easy-to-clean tool that never leaves pockets of unmixed flour behind or over-mixes your batters or doughs, the Danish dough whisk is for you. Find out much more about it—including the best ways to use it—below. With as many asthma and allergy sufferers as we have in the family, I know that keeping our indoor air clean and free of irritants can be a big help in minimizing day-to-day symptoms. One easy way to clean the air is to open a window, because when fresh air mixes with the air inside, it helps dilute the overall concentration of airborne pollutants. But outdoor air isn’t always as “clean” as we’d like, and opening a window could invite airborne pollen, dust, or smoke to come inside too. That’s why I suggest using a two-pronged approach to cleaning the air in your home. Along with letting some fresh air inside (ideally when the pollen count and wind are low), diffusing essential oils can help improve indoor air quality too. I like to use [Defend]( for this, because most of the oils that make up this blend have powerful antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. It also features oils with anti-inflammatory effects that can soothe various types of irritation, which is a great bonus. DO check how watchdogs like [Charity Navigator]( and the Better Business Bureau's [Wise Giving Alliance]( rate an organization before donating. 2. DO your own research online—you can look up causes you want to support with a term like “highly rated charity,” or look up charity names with "complaints." 3. DO find out how much of your donation will go to an organization's mission versus their overhead costs. 4. DON'T make a donation via text message without first confirming that the phone number appears on the charity’s official website. 5. DON'T give personal or financial information (like your Social Security number, date of birth, account numbers, etc.) to anyone soliciting a donation. 6. DON'T make donations in the form of cash, gift cards, wire transfers, or any other payment method that would be difficult to trace—stick to credit card or check instead. JILLEE'S PICK A Drink Trend I Can Get Behind [A photo of three different mocktails.]( In case you aren't familiar, “Dry January” is a month-long fast from alcohol that some adopt in the aftermath of the holidays, and it tends to come back into vogue at the beginning of each year. In 2022, however, abstaining from alcohol has remained popular even though January has long since passed. Whatever the reason may be, sobriety seems to be a growing trend, and that’s good news for those of us who don’t or can’t drink. Between a growing market for non-alcoholic spirits and an existing appreciation for handcrafted drinks, non-alcoholic “mocktails” are popping up on drink menus across the country. I'm very happy to hear this, because who doesn't want to sip on a delicious and interesting drink made with quality ingredients? I’d love to see a mocktail section added to every drink menu! This list of “[20+ Best Mocktail Recipes](” from Town & Country has so many tasty concoctions that I feel inspired to serve a few this summer at family parties and/or barbecues. MONDAY MOTIVATION Watch What You’re “Watering” Stop watering the weeds in your life and start watering the flowers. Like anyone who makes their living online, I’ve had my share of encounters with “haters.” Some people just seem to thrive on negativity—they focus on the worst aspects of any situation and get a kick out of highlighting other people’s flaws or shortcomings. People who tear down others often do it to mask their own deeply insecure feelings, so it's rarely "about" the person they're targeting. That doesn't make it okay for someone like that to hurt or humiliate you, but you can't control what they do. You can, however, control what you do. You can choose not to engage with someone who is being overtly rude or clearly looking for a fight. You don’t have to get entangled in their drama or prove that you’re a good person. Neither do you have to sacrifice your peace or sanity by attempting to appease a bully, especially if they’re the type who will find something “wrong” with you no matter what you do. Don’t waste your time and effort watering weeds when you’re surrounded by beautiful flowers. Give your time and energy to those who love you and build you up, and let the weeds wither away. A FEW MORE THINGS... Good Genes: It’s National DNA Day, which commemorates both the discovery of [its double helix structure]( in 1953 and the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003. DNA Day seeks to promote interest in genetics and genomics by enhancing our appreciation of the chains of A’s, T’s, G’s, and C’s that carry the genetic code of all living things. On This Day: In 1719, Daniel Defoe published his novel [Robinson Crusoe](, widely considered the first English novel and the beginning of the realistic fiction genre. (Maybe too realistic—the book was originally attributed to Robinson Crusoe, leading some to believe it was a genuine autobiographical account of his travels.) 🤔 Wordle: [Solve today's 5-letter word](.
