PLUS: A simple fix for seriously dry skin, the difference between snoring and sleep apnea, and more. April 21, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! Over my 30 seasons of planting and caring for flower pots, I feel confident in saying that I’ve likely made every mistake in the book! But learning what not to do has taught me a lot of valuable lessons. I’m sharing 11 of the best tips I know for choosing, planting, and nourishing potted flowers in Today’s Good Thing. May they bless you with the sight of thriving flowers outside your window all season long. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 11 Easy Tips For Planting Flower Pots That Will Flourish [Photos of Jillee planting flowers.]( Hoping to surround your home with flourishing flower pots this summer? These tips will help. 1. Choose Large Pots. A lot of people assume smaller pots are easier to care for, but it’s important to know that the smaller a pot is, the faster it will dry out. Bigger pots hold more soil and thus more moisture, which means you won’t have to water them as frequently when temperatures rise. 2. Don’t Forget Drainage. Drainage holes allow excess water to drain out the container, and that can help prevent symptoms of overwatering like slow growth, yellowing leaves, and root rot. There’s no adequate substitute for drainage holes, so make sure that all your pots have at least one. 3. Fill Pots With Soil Only. Some people use packing peanuts, empty containers, and other “fillers” to reduce the weight of their pots, but replacing some of the soil with fillers eliminates the water-retaining benefits of a large pot. If you’re worried about the weight of your pots, rolling stands or casters can make them easier to move. 4. Use The Right Soil. Be sure to use soil that’s recommended for use in containers, such as potting mix or raised bed soil. These are lighter and contain mosses and other materials that help retain moisture while allowing for airflow to get down to the roots of your potted plants. 5. Make A List Before You Shop. Bringing a list of the plants, supplies, and equipment you need will help you avoid getting overwhelmed once it’s time to go shopping. At the very least, you should know how many pots you’ll be planting and how much sun they’ll get in the spots you’ll place them. 6. Group Flowers With Similar Needs. Once you know where your pots will go, you’ll be ready to pick out your flowers. You can mix and match different plants in the same pot as long as they have similar water and sun requirements. You can usually find those details on the plant tags. [5 More Tips For Planting Flower Pots That Will Flourish ➜]( Related • [Puzzled By Perennials? Know The Signs Of Sleep Apnea [A photo of Jillee sleeping.]( While snoring and sleep apnea have some similarities, sleep apnea is a more serious condition that shouldn’t go untreated. Last week, I shared a tutorial for how to make a gel infused with essential oils to relieve snoring and promote more restful sleep. Shortly after, I received a number of responses from readers expressing their concern that I hadn’t mentioned sleep apnea in that segment. As sleep apnea can lead to serious health issues, I wanted to address it in this segment today. Sleep apnea is a disorder that causes breathing to become obstructed during sleep, which the brain resolves by rousing the person from sleep so they can draw breath. Because this can happen multiple times a night, people who suffer from sleep apnea may experience continued interruptions to their REM sleep, which in the short term causes fatigue, irritability, headaches, and difficulty thinking clearly. In the long term, it can even lead to high blood pressure and other cardiovascular issues. However, snoring is not always a symptom of sleep apnea. Regular or primary snoring can be a byproduct of nose or throat conditions, jaw shape, sleeping position, weight, age, and use of sedatives and depressants. With sleep apnea, snoring is often both louder and more frequent than normal. The person may also sound like they’re having difficulty breathing (gasping, choking, snorting, etc.). If you or your spouse snore and have other symptoms associated with sleep apnea, talk to your doctor about it as soon as possible. SWAP THAT 🔄 FOR THIS Moisturize Seriously Dry Skin With Coconut Oil [Photos of lotion and fractionated coconut oil.]( If you’re struggling with dry, scaly skin, just reach for your bottle of fractionated coconut oil. It doesn’t happen all the time, but every once in a while I get a patch of dry skin (usually on my heels, legs, or elbows) that doesn’t seem to respond to anything I try to put on it. I can slather on lotions and creams all day long, but the skin is just so dry that none of my everyday products make much of a difference. In many of those cases, I found that coconut oil was one of the only things that really helped. (I usually use [fractionated coconut oil]( for this, which has had its solid fats removed so that it stays in liquid form. But virgin coconut oil would work just as well!) To treat dry, tough skin on your knees, elbows, or heels, just put a tablespoon of coconut oil in your palm, add a couple drops of lavender oil to it, then rub the oils onto the affected area. The healing and skin-nourishing compounds in both oils will make your skin feeling softer and more moisturized before you know it! But as we all know, attitude is everything, and I often find it helpful to expose myself to people who have a more positive attitude about cooking to remind myself that cooking doesn’t have to be such a drag. One of my favorite people to follow on Instagram in that regard is August DeWindt ([@theres.food.at.home](). She shares great tips and recipes on her Instagram, [TikTok](, and [blog](, and I appreciate her down to earth approach to cooking. (I also love her catchphrase for introducing recipes: “I told y’all there’s food at home!”) I can also give her [crunchy roasted chickpeas]( two big thumbs up—not only are they easy to make with stuff I usually already have on hand, but they make a delicious snack too. YOUR ONE GOOD THING The Pleasant Surprise Of Pain Relief Victoria shared her experience with the [Restore roll-on](: "This might be a small bottle, but please don’t let its size discourage you from trying it. I was curious and finally gave into my curiosity, and boy, am I glad I did! I roll it on my neck (I have 3 herniated discs) and massage it in a bit, and the relief is instant and lasting. I even used it on my knees after teaching Zumba and it helped. My advice is to try it. You just may be pleasantly surprised like I was! Thank you, Jillee!" I never get tired of hearing stories like Victoria's. It’s one thing to try something on my own and have it work for me, but there’s a whole other level of gratification that comes from hearing that someone else had the same experience. So thank you to Victoria for sharing! Restore’s pleasant cooling effect and pain relieving qualities come from a variety of oils, like wintergreen, peppermint, ylang ylang, helichrysum, blue tansy, and blue chamomile. [The roll-on format]( is my favorite because you can carry it in your bag and swipe it on whenever you need it. ([Learn more in this post](!) Have a great tip or trick of your own?
