PLUS: Cleaning the grimiest part of your disposal, the latest fraud trend to look out for, and more. April 18, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! There’s plenty to love about springtime, but it can be bittersweet for those with seasonal allergies. If puffy, itchy eyes and stuffy noses are driving you crazy, find out about a simple way to find much-needed relief in Today’s Good Thing. Also in today’s newsletter, I’m sharing a few thoughts about the future in a new Monday Motivation. If you’re often preoccupied with worries about the future, I hope my message inspires you to keep an open mind about the unexpected. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Allergies Making You Miserable? You Need To Know About This [Photos of Jillee using All Clear blend for allergies.]( If medication isn’t doing enough to ease your allergy symptoms, here’s your new secret weapon. If you suffer from seasonal allergies and suspect that your symptoms have been worsening over time, there’s an increasing amount of evidence that says you may be right. Researchers studying pollen activity have observed that the pollen season in North America has gotten longer and more intense in recent years. Their research also suggests climate change is driving these changes, which unfortunately means that seasonal allergy symptoms are likely to continue getting worse as well. While I don’t personally suffer from pollen-related allergies or asthma, my heart aches for my husbands, kids, and readers who do! But I’m not just here to offer condolences—I have a simple and effective remedy to share with you that can help relieve allergy symptoms like stuffy noses and itchy eyes. My daughter Britta, who is experiencing worsening allergies herself, swears by it during those periods where allergy medicine alone isn’t cutting it. If your seasonal allergies have been acting up—and I would be surprised if they haven’t, seeing as how everyone in my family has been sniffling, sneezing, and rubbing their eyes like crazy lately—follow the link below to learn more and get the relief you need. While cleaning your garbage disposal can be as simple as dropping a few [frozen lemon vinegar cubes]( into it turning it on, many people neglect to clean the disposal’s splash guard. The black rubber flap that helps keep food inside the disposal may be clean an enough on top, but it’s the underside you need to worry about. Because the underside of the splash guard is “out of sight, out of mind,” it rarely gets cleaned, which can allow bacteria to grow and thrive on its wet, food-splattered surface. This bacteria can spread to the rest of your sink and even onto your dishes, and that’s definitely not what you want! Luckily, this situation is easily rectified. Once a week, flip the splash guard up to expose the underside, then scrub it thoroughly with a sponge or old toothbrush and hydrogen peroxide. It will keep your sink more sanitary and your disposal free of odors. STAY SAFE OUT THERE Google Voice Fraud: What You Need To Know [A photo of Jillee gasping at something on her phone screen.]( Find out how to protect yourself from a new trend in fraud that could get you in legal trouble. Google’s virtual phone and text messaging service Google Voice isn’t inherently shady, but it is playing a starring role in a clever form of fraud that is proving to be increasingly popular with scammers. Here’s a quick breakdown of how the scheme works. The most common targets are people who recently posted their phone number online, usually while listing an item for sale or while seeking information about a lost item or pet. A scammer calls that number and says they're interested or have information, but that they want to verify the person's identity first to make sure they're legit. They’ll tell the victim they’re going to be sent a verification code from Google Voice and ask them to read back the code. But once the scammer has the code, they can use it to create a Google Voice account using the victim’s name and phone number. Now they have a virtual phone number they can use for illicit purposes and a human shield to take the blame. To prevent a scammer from being able to set up a Google Voice account under your name, don’t read out or share verification codes with anyone. Many account setup processes require some type of verification code, and it will be a lot harder for anyone to use your name or phone number online without such a code. If you know or suspect someone has already made an account using your name or phone number, learn how to reclaim your number at [Google Voice Help Center](. JILLEE'S PICK All Things Target [An image of a laptop screen displaying the All Things Target website.]( Despite being a 30-minute drive from the nearest one, that has never dampened my enthusiasm for shopping at Target. It’s a one-stop shop for anything I might need, along with plenty of things I don’t need and will buy anyway. (If a Target cashier asks if I found everything I was looking for, I always respond “And then some!”) I know a lot of you shop at Target regularly too, so I wanted to tell you about a great resource I came across recently for clearance deals, special offers, and other Target-related info—the aptly-named website [All Things Target](. Christy, the brains behind All Things Target, is based in the Pacific Northwest, so her clearance and Dollar Spot finds will likely differ from the selection at your nearest store. But anyone can benefit from her timely updates, like her preview of the upcoming [Hearth & Hand summer collection](. You can even follow along on Instagram at All Things Target ([@allthingstarget]() for inspiration and updates in your feed. MONDAY MOTIVATION The Future Is Unknowable, So Let It Surprise You When I started my blog back in 2011, it felt like a natural way to make use of my background in writing and journalism, but I didn’t expect anyone outside of family and close friends would want to read it. I never foresaw my blog having thousands of regular readers, but the future often unfolds in ways we don’t expect. The unknowable nature of the future is top of mind today because this week marks the 3rd anniversary of the [By Jillee Shop](—the online shop that I both never planned on starting, and yet couldn’t be prouder of. Sales and retail never appealed to me in the past, and I had no reason to expect that would change. There were practical (i.e. boring) reasons to “diversify the business's revenue," but you know me well enough to know that sort of thing doesn't really inspire or motivate me. What ended up appealing to me about having a shop was the idea that I could use it to share useful ideas with you in a more tangible way. Because essential oils are a staple in cleaning, laundry, and beauty DIYs, it was a no-brainer to offer then in my new shop. And over time, I’ve added other items I've discovered and wanted to share with you, like my Danish dough whisk and the skincare routine that took me decades of trial and error to find. The point I'm trying to make here about my blog and shop is that I’m not very good at predicting the future. None of us are. But is that such a bad thing? If I had let my prior disinterest in retail dictate my future, I wouldn’t have a shop to celebrate this week. So keep an open mind. There’s no telling how the future might surprise you—or how you might surprise yourself. A FEW MORE THINGS... Tax Day: It’s Tax Day, which means the deadline to file your 2021 tax return is today. If you need more time, [submit Form 4868]( to apply for an automatic extension, which will give you until October 15 to file a return. Inspect Your Sprinklers: The weather’s getting warmer, which means it’s getting close to lawn watering season (if it hasn’t started already!) Take some time this week to inspect your sprinkler system and ensure it’s in good shape. Be sure to check for leaks, clean any filters, and align your sprinkler heads to reduce waste. 🤔 Wordle: [Solve today's 5-letter word](. What did you think of today's email?
