PLUS: A brilliant way to drip-dry your toilet brush, how to find trustworthy tax prep help, and more. March 28, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! Whether you spot it at the bottom of your shower or inside your vacuum, sometimes it becomes painfully clear that you're losing more hair than you used to. But you can pump the brakes on hair loss and even promote new growth with the help of the simple tips in Today’s Good Thing. Also in today’s newsletter, a new Stay Safe Out There has important information that can help you protect yourself from ghosts. (Not those ghosts. These ones are committing tax fraud, though the consequences could certainly haunt you!) Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 11 Simple Things You Can Do To Stop Hair Loss [A photo of Jillee looking at her hair in a mirror.]( Use these simple tips to fight hair loss and promote the growth of longer, stronger hair. I’ve always admired my daughter Britta’s thick tresses, and it seems like it wasn’t so long ago that my hair was just as thick and plentiful. Unfortunately, my hair has definitely gotten thinner, both in terms of quality and quantity, as I’ve gotten older. I first started noticing I was experiencing more hair fall around the time I turned 40. The realization that a LOT of hair was collecting at the bottom of my shower every time I washed my hair was disconcerting, to say the least! It was disconcerting, but not necessarily surprising, given that my mother went through the same thing with her hair. I knew there must be something I could do to prevent further hair loss and help strengthen my hair too, and I was determined to find out what it was. Since then, I’ve picked up a number of useful tips for stopping hair loss, and I’ll be sharing 11 of the best remedies with you today. These tips can help slow hair loss and promote the growth of stronger hair. From healthy habits like getting the right vitamins to behavioral changes like avoiding smoking and drinking, there are all sorts of easy ways we can improve the state of our hair and scalp. You can check out all 11 of them at the link below. While your toilet brush is rarely going to be “clean,” putting it away while it’s still dripping wet isn’t helping matters. Aside from dripping water on the floor between the toilet and the holder, it’ll also drip water into the holder, which could prevent the brush from drying properly. Instead, it's better to let your toilet brush dry out for a time before putting it back. And there’s actually a really clever way to do it, which I picked up from woman who cleaned professionally for years and years. Her suggestion was to prop the toilet brush between the toilet bowl and the seat, with the bristles suspended over the water. That way, the toilet brush will drip into the bowl instead of the brush holder or the floor. It also allows air to circulate around the brush so that it dries quickly. How smart is that? STAY SAFE OUT THERE Looking For Tax Help? Beware Of 'Ghosts' [A photo of pencils and tax documents.]( Still need to finish up your 2021 taxes? This information can help you avoid getting taken advantage of. In recent years, the IRS has warned taxpayers about so-called “ghost” preparers, or people who offer tax preparation services without a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). Many ghost preparers don’t actually sign the returns they prepare, meaning their clients are left on the hook for any errors or inaccuracies. Ghost preparers tend to find easy marks around tax time, betting that people who are in a hurry to file their taxes will be less likely to scrutinize the forms and double-check their work. One thing many sketchy ghost preparers do is base their fee on a percentage of your refund. In order to maximize that amount, they may fudge numbers or lie outright on your taxes in order to claim credits or deductions you aren’t actually entitled to. These crooks often set up pop-up offices near tax season or show up to offer their services at community events. But by the time the IRS has reviewed your return and flagged any inaccuracies, you can bet that the ghost and the money you paid them will have vanished. To avoid getting ripped off by a ghost preparer: • Confirm that your tax preparer has a valid 2021 PTIN issued by the IRS. • Check that their signature and PTIN appear on your tax return before signing off on the documents. • If you choose to have your refund deposited automatically, make sure the account number and routing number listed are yours. JILLEE'S PICK Yogurt Custard Toast [Photos of yogurt custard toast topped with blueberries.]( To me, toast is one of life’s simplest pleasures. Whether it’s plain buttered toast, cinnamon sugar toast, or something more elaborate, I just never seem to get sick of it. It’s one of those foods I can always go back to when I’m feeling uninspired or just need something quick and easy to eat. I’m willing to try just about any variation of toast that piques my interest, because there are very few types of toast that I’ve tried and haven’t liked. So when I heard that something called “yogurt custard toast” was TikTok’s latest trendy food creation, I was ready to give it a try right that minute! To make it, you form a cavity in the center of 3 pieces of bread, then fill it with a mixture of Greek yogurt, an egg, and a bit of maple syrup. Sprinkle a few berries on top, bake (or air fry) for a few minutes, then dust with powdered sugar and dig in. The finished product is reminiscent of a Danish pantry with its sweet, creamy filling. I found it surprisingly tasty, and it was ultimately very quick and easy to make too. If you want to give it a try for yourself, you can find the recipe for [yogurt custard toast at Allrecipes.com](. MONDAY MOTIVATION Practice Radical Kindness While I do believe that most people are decent and care about others, the world has a way of pitting us against each other. It's often easier to do the selfish thing than to do the kindhearted thing, especially when we see people around us doing selfish things too. But the more we permit ourselves to act selfishly at the expense of others, the less kindness there is in the world, and the less incentive anyone has to be kind in the future. If you don’t want to live in a world where people only act in their own self-interest, are you showing it with your actions? Are you putting more kindness into the world? Being kind when other people aren’t being very kind to you can be difficult, but try to remember that when other people act selfishly, it’s rarely about you. If you can meet selfishness with grace and kindness, you can show them a better way to treat people while making the world a little bit better in the process. My challenge for you this week is to look for opportunities to practice radical kindness. Here are some ideas to get you started: • Give someone a hug. • Compliment a stranger. • Let the person in line behind you go first. • Ask someone about their day and listen attentively. • Check in with someone going through a hard time. • Let another car merge in front of you. • Encourage someone. • Forgive someone.
