March 21, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! Simple things and effective things are both great, but when something is both simple and effective? Thatâs something you shouldn't take for granted, which is why the simple stain remover Iâm sharing in Todayâs Good Thing has a permanent place of honor in my laundry room. Also in todayâs newsletter, Iâve got a new Monday Motivation message for you on the topic of emotional vulnerability. I hope it inspires you to let your guard down a little this week, and that you feel stronger and braver for doing it. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING This Is My "Ultimate Stain Remover" For Good Reason [A GIF showing a before photo of a stained shirt and an after photo of the stains being gone.]( It may only have two ingredients, but it works wonders on all kinds of different stains. A couple of years ago, I bought a nice pair of pants in the most beautiful coral color, but in my unfortunately accident-prone manner, I promptly soiled them with an oily food stain. I was devastated, because I was sure it was going to take a miracle to get that greasy stain out. Luckily for me, that didnât end up being the case at all. In the end, it was fairly easy to get that oily stain out, and all it took was a tag-team treatment with a couple of my all-time trustiest cleaning agents: Dawn dish soap and hydrogen peroxide. Not only does Dawn help cut through the grease, but it also acts as an emulsifier in the wash, making it so that the water can dissolve and lift the oil out of the fabric. And hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing agent that alters stains at a molecular level. By breaking down the molecules responsible for its color, the stain disappears. By combining Dawn and hydrogen peroxidesâ powerful stain-fighting properties, even the greasiest and most colorful stains donât stand a chance. (Check out the results for yourself in the before and after photos of a stained white shirt below!) I used to apply them individually, but I eventually wised up and realized I could mix it up ahead of time, and thatâs how my âUltimate Stain Remover Sprayâ was born. Iâm positive youâll think itâs just as miraculous as I do, so follow the link to get the full recipe and details. For The Interior: Eliminate Ground-In Dirt If you have a lot of nooks and crannies or textured vinyl in your car, itâs all too easy for dirt and grime to get ground into them over time. Luckily, an old toothbrush dipped into a cup of warm, soapy water can helpâuse it to scrub crevices and textured surfaces to get all that gunk out, then wipe with a clean, damp cloth. For The Exterior: Loosen Up Bug Splatters Stubborn bug splatters on your windshield or front bumper? Instead of scrubbing them and potentially wearing away your protective finish or damaging the paint, grab a can of cooking spray instead. Just spritz it onto the splatter, wait a few seconds for it to loosen up, then wipe it away with a soft microfiber cloth. Keeping It Clean: Have A Place For Trash Line a cereal storage container with a plastic grocery bag, then put it in your car and use it as a trash can. Youâd be amazed at how many messes can be avoided entirely just by having somewhere for passengersâand the driver, for that matterâto put their trash. Itâs especially useful during road trips too. STAY SAFE OUT THERE Improve Your Home Without Getting Hustled [A photo of a man hammering a nail into wood.]( Not every handyman is a con artist, but itâs better to be cautious when it comes to your home. When you own a home, itâs not uncommon for people to show up on your doorstep offering to perform work on your home or property. It often feels like a convenient solution too, especially if they're offering to do something you've been meaning to address for a while. But if that person is actually trying to swindle you or their work ends up being shoddy, you may end up worse off than you were before, so it's important to know who youâre dealing with before you make any kind of agreement. Scammers will often ask for payment up front, and once they have it, they could easily disappear with your money. Others may do the work poorly, or try to jack up the price by claiming they discovered a larger issue that needs immediate attention. Neither of these are desirable outcomes, so how do you know who to trust? Look for red flags like unsolicited house calls, limited-time offers, and demands for payment upfront or in cash. Any of these should make you think twice about trusting a person with your home improvement work. And it's never a bad idea to search for the person or business online to see if any reviews come upâgood or badâbefore agreeing to anything. JILLEE'S PICK Not Enough Nelsons [A photo of the Nelson family.]( I grew up in a family of 8, which is fairly large compared to the "average family." When Dave and I got married, I insisted that I wanted our family to be as big as mine was. But after we had our fourth child Sten, my attitude toward having more kids could be summed up with a present-day Sten-ism: âNah, Iâm good.â So when I see families like the Nelsons (AKA the YouTube-famous Not Enough Nelsons), I can only applaud them for figuring out the secret to making a larger-than-large family work. The Nelsons are a family of 18(!), and all of them make regular appearances in their [YouTube videos]( and Instagram feed ([@notenoughnelsons](). The Nelson family consists of parents Tiffany and Benji Nelson and their 16 kids, whose ages range from from 24 at the oldest to just 2 years old at the youngest. There are 7 biological children and 9 adopted children (and as you might guess from the kidsâ names, they do indeed live right here in Utah). Considering that their YouTube channel has 1.2 million subscribers, Iâm clearly not the only one who finds their story and family size compelling. Whether you want to see how they handle [packing their lunches for school]( or [getting ready for cheer practice](, there's plenty to watch of this sizable clan. MONDAY MOTIVATION Being Vulnerable Is Worth The Risk âOwning our story can be hard, but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky, but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joyâthe experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.â - Brené Brown I really like this quote from Brené Brown, because she wisely points out that being emotionally vulnerable is a necessary step along the path toward true belonging and connection, which are two things we crave as human beings. But vulnerability can be scary, and sometimes our fear of emotional harmâlike getting rejected or feeling humiliatedâtries to step in and prevent us from sharing our true selves with others. By trying to protect ourselves from harm, we end up cutting ourselves off from the possibility of experiencing deep, authentic connections. Vulnerability is a âno risk, no rewardâ situationâif you donât put yourself out there, whether by sharing your true feelings or opening up about things you normally keep hidden, you're not giving yourself the chance to reap the rewards of feeling fully understood or loved. Itâs true that being vulnerable doesnât always go exactly how we'd like it toâin fact, sometimes it blows up in your face. But with the right people, the reward is always worth the risk, and it isn't one-sided either. By opening up to the people you care about, you can show them that it's safe to open up to you too. My challenge for you this week is to notice when youâre afraid of getting âtoo real,â then acknowledge your fear and go for it anyway. Be courageous, and trust in the people who love you to handle the truthâyour truth. If you can do that, you might find it opens doors in your relationships you never even knew were closed.
