PLUS: A hack to keep avocado fresh longer, flavorful and foolproof homemade yogurt, and more. PLUS: Flavorful and foolproof homemade yogurt, a hack to keep avocado fresh longer, and more. March 17, 2022 [View Online]( Happy Saint Patrick's Day! ☘️ I’ve got some interesting details about the history of this Irish holiday for you in A Few More Things, but there's plenty to learn and explore between here and there. First, dark spots and age spots may be a fact of life, but that doesn't mean there's nothing we can do about them. I'll walk you through how one simple ingredient can help you unlock brighter, firmer skin in Today's Good Thing. Also in today’s newsletter, learn how to make homemade yogurt in a new Swap That For This. You’ll love the fresh, homemade flavor, and my crockpot method makes the process all but foolproof. (If I haven’t managed to mess it up yet, I doubt anyone will!) Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Here's Why Vitamin C Is Ultimate Answer For Dark Spots [Photos of Jillee using a vitamin C serum.]( Vitamin C is one of the best ingredients for age spots and hyperpigmentation—here’s how I’m using it. Back when I was growing up in sunny California, my friends and I were much more concerned with maintaining our tans than protecting our skin from the sun, and I’m sure many of you can relate! But the carefree ways of my youth have come back to haunt me in the form of dark spots. Eventually, regardless of our skin color or background, most of us will develop some kind of age spots or hyperpigmentation. As long as those dark spots aren't concerning to your doctor or dermatologist, they’re pretty much harmless, but that doesn't necessarily mean you want them to stick around. In fact, I already know that a lot of you don’t—in a newsletter poll a while back, I asked what your biggest concern was with your skin, and dark spots received the most votes of any of the options (which included wrinkles and sagging!) Luckily, there’s an ingredient we can use to combat dark spots for brighter, firmer skin over time: vitamin C. Dermatologists often recommend this ingredient to combat hyperpigmentation, and it can be even more beneficial in the form of a powerful, skin-nourishing serum. When I started searching for a vitamin C serum to try, I wasn’t sure I would be able to find one that would agree with my sensitive skin, but I’m happy to report that I did! You can get all the details about the serum I’ve been using, and learn more about how vitamin C can benefit your skin, at the link below. Keep Leftover Avocado Fresh Longer [Photos of avocado stored in a container with onion pieces.]( Leftover avocado can spoil maddeningly quickly, but not when you store it with this natural preservative. Depending on how big it is, you don’t always need a whole avocado for a recipe or as a topping. But once you pierce its tough outer skin, it's a race against the clock to keep any leftover avocado from rapidly going brown. Luckily, there’s a simple storage tip that can help. Put the avocado portion you want to save in a small, airtight container with a small chunk of onion. The sulfur compounds in the onion will help preserve the avocado by inhibiting the enzymes that contribute to discoloration and decay. Your avocado will stay fresh for at least a day or two, giving you more time to finish it off. (While I personally haven’t noticed any significant transfer of onion scent or taste to the avocado flesh when I’ve done this, you may want to steer clear of this method if you’re really sensitive to onions—better safe than sorry!) SWAP THAT 🔄 FOR THIS Making Yogurt Is Easier Than You Think [Photos of the process of making crockpot yogurt.]( Turn yogurt into an abundance of tasty homemade yogurt with the help of your crockpot. Whenever I mention to someone that I’ve made my own homemade yogurt in the past, I tend to be met with astonishment! While it may sound pretty impressive on paper, making yogurt at home is easier than you might think. What I find most fascinating about the process I use, which involves heating milk in a slow cooker and then “incubating” the yogurt inside your oven, is that it makes use of live yogurt cultures. So you’re essentially using a little bit of yogurt to make a lot more homemade yogurt, which I think is pretty cool! The crockpot-and-oven method hasn’t failed me yet in the many times I’ve used it, which to me means it's essentially impossible to mess up. (If it were possible to mess it up, I'm certain I would have done it by now!) Homemade yogurt is not only easy to make, but it’s delicious too, so what do you have to lose? Check out my full step-by-step tutorial on how to make homemade yogurt in a crockpot at the link below. (Or, if you prefer, you can check out the instructions for [making it in an Instant Pot](!) You can find amazing examples of both features in the Instagram feed of blogger and author Niki Brantmark ([@myscandinavianhome](). Both on her blog [My Scandinavian Home]( and on Instagram, Brantmark shares beautiful photos of Scandi-inspired interiors and photos of her own home in Sweden. As silly as it might sound, I feel calmer just looking at the beautiful spaces she features—I find the serene colors and rumpled, lived-in fabrics very inviting. While I’d heard of the book [Lagom: The Swedish Art of Living a Balanced, Happy Life](, I didn’t realize it was written by the same woman behind My Scandinavian Home until, well, right now, so I’ll have to put it on my “books to read” list! Check out Niki Brantmark’s Instagram, blog, and other books for more Scandi goodness. YOUR ONE GOOD THING Choose Smaller Bed Linens And Towels Peggy K. from South Florida has a great tip for towels and bedding: "With respect to towels and bed linens, go down to the smallest size you can tolerate (like going from a queen top sheet to a full or twin, or a bath sheet to a standard bath towel). Smaller linens take up less room in the washing machine so you can run fewer loads, meaning you’ll use less electricity, water, and detergent and extend the life of your machine." I love your approach here, Peggy. It’s simple, doable, and helps save resources while doing laundry. It’s a good reminder to me that not every change I make at home has to be the biggest or the most noticeable, because every little bit adds up! Have a great tip or trick of your own? [Share YOUR “one good thing” here]( for a chance to see it featured in a future newsletter! A FEW MORE THINGS... The Patron Saint Of Ireland: [Saint Patrick]( was a missionary from Roman Britain who is said to have converted thousands of Irish pagans to Christianity during the 5th century AD. His [feast day]( is March 17, traditionally believed to be the date of his death. As he predated papal canonization, Patrick was never formally canonized, yet is regarded as a Saint by most major Christian denominations. Celebrating Saint Patrick: Saint Patrick is said to have used the three-leaved shamrock to teach pagans about the Holy Trinity, making shamrocks and the color green an integral part of Saint Patrick's Day dress and decor. The holiday is celebrated primarily in Ireland, both as a religious holiday and celebration of Irish culture, but is also observed by those of Irish heritage around the world. 🤔 Wordle: [Solve today's 5-letter word](.
