PLUS: A reader’s tip for cleaning seriously grimy walls, a simple way to organize your notebooks, and more. March 10, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! If you love lime juice as much as I do, then you already know that it’s worth the effort to use the fresh stuff. And you’ll be able to get more juice out of every lime (or lemon, or orange!) once you learn about the 4-step citrus juicing hack in Today’s Good Thing. Also in today’s newsletter, Your One Good Thing features a first for this newsletter—one reader submitted a question about cleaning stained walls, while another reader (unknowingly) submitted the perfect answer. I’m just the one who brought them together! Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING This Hack Gets The Most Juice Out Of Limes And Lemons [A collage of the steps of juicing citrus: microwaving, rolling on a counter, slicing, and squeezing.]( To get as much juice as possible out of your citrus, just follow these 4 simple steps. Before I learned this clever juicing hack, I had all but resigned myself to the fact that I no longer had the the grip strength to get a decent amount of juice out of citrus fruits. Luckily for me, this simple 4-step process makes it easy to squeeze out every last drop of juice from lemons or limes with very little effort. Here’s how to do it: 1. Warm It Up. Start by microwaving the fruit for about 20 seconds to warm it up. This will relax the tough peel and encourage the juice inside to flow more freely, (which is especially crucial if it just came out of your refrigerator. After microwaving the fruit, let it cool for a minute or so. 2. Press And Roll. Next, roll your citrus fruit back and forth on the counter a few times while applying gentle pressure to it. This helps burst the individual juice-filled segments within the fruit, making it easier to get more juice out after you cut into it. 3. Remove The Sides. Stand your lemon, lime, or orange on one end by slicing some of the peel off to give it a flat surface. Then use a sharp knife to remove the four “cheeks” of the fruit like you would cut around the core of an apple. Try to cut close to the “core” without actually cutting through it. 4. Squeeze The Sides And Core: Finally, squeeze all the juice out of the four sides you removed from the fruit, as well as the core. This step will be much easier and yield more juice than if you had used a different method! Make An Index For Any Notebook [Photos of an index added to a notepad.]( This system makes any notebook easier to navigate, and you don’t have to start a new one to use it. This is going to sound very contradictory, but I don’t like having a lot of rules for how I use notebooks, but I also don’t like my notebooks to be completely disorganized. The obvious solution would be to start a new notebook and keep it organized from the start, but I'm always in the middle of one whenever the thought occurs to me! Fortunately, I came across a notebook indexing system that you can start using at any time. I use it in all of my notebooks now and really like it, and I think you will too. Here’s how to do it: Start by flipping to the first or last page and writing down a list of categories to serve as your index. It should be specific to what you’ve written in the notebook, or what you plan to write in it (like Work, Recipes, Travel plans, Journal entries, etc.) Put each category on its own line. Next, go through your notebook and make a mark right at the edge of the page on the same line that you wrote the category name on. (For example, if you wrote Work on the 11th line of your index page, you would then flip to each work-related page and make a mark along the edge of the 11th line on those pages.) Once you’ve done this for all of your categories, you can look at the notebook from the side and see which pages correspond to which category. That way, if you’re looking for a specific page of notes you took during a work meeting, you can look to see which pages are marked on the “Work” line and find what you're looking for faster. SWAP THAT 🔄 FOR THIS Remove Makeup With Less Waste [An image of disposable makeup wipes and microfiber makeup remover cloths.]( The convenience of makeup wipes can't hold a candle to the benefits of reusable cloths. Up until a few years ago, I used makeup remover wipes almost exclusively to remove my stubborn eye makeup. But after buying yet another pack of wipes, which aren't exactly cheap, a switch flipped in my brain—I realized there had to be a better option, and I was determined to find it. I eventually did find it in the form of a set of [microfiber makeup remover cloths](. Just dampen one with liquid makeup remover, micellar water, or even plain water and use it to gently wipe off your makeup. To clean the cloth afterward, rinse it out in your sink or toss it in the wash. Makeup remover cloths are less wasteful, gentler, and more effective than disposable wipes. Plus, they're easy to care for—one comment I often hear from people who switch to makeup remover cloths is that they were surprised by how easy they are to clean. You can toss them in your washer and even stubborn makeup will come right out! Another thing I often hear from new users is that they wish they’d [switched from wipes to cloths]( sooner. And my response is always the same: “You and me both!” JILLEE'S PICK Humor For Hard Times [Photos of various memes from My Therapist Says on Instagram.]( I started following an Instagram account called My Therapist Says ([@mytherapistsays]() a few months ago, and their posts have tickled my funny bone on a regular basis ever since. They mainly share memes, many of which are very relatable to those who have struggled with their mental health. I know that some would argue that the memes shared by My Therapist Says make light of a serious subject. And while I agree that mental health is a serious matter, I can also tell you from my own experience that there’s usually more than enough seriousness in your life when you’re experiencing depression or anxiety. Finding a way to laugh about it, even for a moment, can have a positive impact on your mental and physical health. And if it makes you laugh because it's relatable—like I did when I saw a meme from MTS that said: “Don’t know why chickens start their day with screaming but I understand”—it can help you feel less alone too. Do you follow any Instagram accounts that make you smile or laugh on a regular basis? Hit “reply” and tell me about it! YOUR ONE GOOD THING A Tip For Cleaning Seriously Grimy Walls Vicki wrote in with a question after I mentioned cleaning walls in a recent newsletter: "What is the best cleaning solution for painted walls in an old house? They haven't been washed in over 30 years and have a build up of cigarette smoke, etc." Cynthia wrote in around the same time to share the following tip: "I use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Mop, with and without the handle, to clean my walls. The only trouble I have is getting enough water squeezed out—it tends to run down the wall." Not only is Cynthia's idea very smart on its own, but I think it's the perfect thing for Vicki to try on her smoke-stained walls. Magic Erasers can be very useful when you’re dealing with heavy staining on hard surfaces, and the larger size of the mop would cover more area in a shorter period of time. From what I can tell, there are [two varieties of Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Mops](—a squeeze mop and a roller mop. I’m not sure which one Cynthia has, but I would assume either would work for walls. (As for the dripping issue, I say that if the mop helps you get rid of 30 years of staining, a few drips isn't a bad trade!) Have a great tip or trick of your own?
