February 15, 2022 [View Online]( TOGETHER WITH [LMNT]( Good morning! It’s officially that time of year, when our arid climate and central heating are taking their toll on my skin. My hands are in decent shape though, thanks in large part to the foaming hand soap I'm sharing in Today’s Good Thing. It’s one of the only soaps that moisturizes hands instead of making them drier. And speaking of dryness, today’s newsletter also includes a brilliant tip for rescuing a stale loaf of crusty bakery bread. I was skeptical at first, but it really does make bread as crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside as if it were freshly baked! Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING This Hand Soap Will Make Your Skin Softer, Not Drier [Photos of foaming hand soap.]( If washing your hands leaves them feeling dry, try this moisturizing foaming hand soap instead. I’ve always kept a bottle of hand soap at my kitchen sink, mainly because I hate how my hands feel after washing them with dish soap. My skin always feels dry and scaly afterward, especially after washing dishes and during wintertime when my skin is already dry. And since I vastly prefer foaming hand soaps to the standard kind, I wanted to see if I could make a foaming hand soap solution at home that would clean and moisturize my hands at the same time. And I'm happy to report that I pulled it off! The main components of my homemade foaming hand soap are liquid castile soap, which you can find at most drugstores or online, and [fractionated coconut oil](. The castile soap serves as both a cleansing agent and an emulsifier, while the fractionated coconut oil moisturizes skin without clogging up the bottle. The recipe also calls for essential oils, and I often use [Defend]( to take advantage of the antibacterial properties of the oils in the blend. But you can use any oil or oil blend you like in your soap—I've also made it with [Simple Clean](, which is particularly effective at cutting grease (and smells great too!) Here’s how to make it: To an empty [foaming hand soap bottle](, add 2 tablespoons of castile soap, 1-2 teaspoons of fractionated coconut oil, and 10-15 drops of your essential oil or oil blend of choice (see above). Fill the remainder of the bottle with water, replace the pump top, then gently tilt the bottle side to side to mix. Before the release of iOS 14, if you got a text or needed to look something up while you were watching a video, you had to leave the video entirely to navigate to another app. But we no longer have to deal with the inconvenience of interrupting our videos, thanks to the update that introduced the Picture in Picture feature. Now when you’re watching a video and want to look something up in another app, you can tap the Picture in Picture button (a symbol with an open rectangle pointing down toward a smaller rectangle) to scale the video window down and have it float in the corner of your screen. Don't like its position? Drag it to another area of the screen. The Picture in Picture feature makes it easy to answer a text or quickly look something up without losing your place in the video you’re watching. It even works with Facetime calls too, so you can access information from other apps during a video call without missing a beat. Android Users: To enable Picture-in-picture access for compatible apps, go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Special app access > Picture-in-picture. There you'll see a list of compatible apps, which you can select individually and enable using the toggle next to Allow picture-in-picture. TOGETHER WITH LMNT The Hidden Truth About Staying Hydrated I have to admit, I don’t always do the best job of staying hydrated. With as many blog posts as I’ve written on the subject over the years, you probably assume that I’m downing water all day long—and you aren’t wrong! I keep a water bottle handy most hours of the day, but the truth is that when it comes to staying hydrated, plain water isn’t enough. Between gardening in the sunshine, running around all day, and my usual chores and errands, it’s not uncommon for me to feel overheated and drained at the end of the day—a side effect of losing essential electrolytes my body needs. Thankfully, I have a super simple, super tasty secret to replenishing them: [LMNT drink mix](. COOKING How To Revive A Stale Loaf Of Bakery Bread [Photos of reviving stale bread.]( If your crusty loaf of bread got stale before you could finish it, you can use this clever tip to revive it. A simple loaf of crusty bread is a thing of beauty, even more so when served warm and smeared with butter. However, this kind of bread doesn’t have the longest shelf life, especially once you’ve broken through that thick, protective crust on the outside. At that point, it can become unpleasantly stale in a hurry! But once I learned the trick to reviving stale bread, my problem was solved entirely. It worked better than I could have hoped, and now I use it whenever I have a bakery loaf that's getting stale. It turns out warm and chewy with a crisp crust that tastes freshly baked. Give it a try for yourself—I’m sure you’ll be as delighted as I was! Here’s how to do it: Moisten the exterior of the loaf with water by briefly running it under water. (If the bread has been cut or partially eaten, avoid getting the interior wet as best as you can.) Once the crust is moist, wrap the loaf in tin foil. Place the wrapped bread in your cold oven, then set it to preheat to 300°F and turn it on. Set a timer for 10 minutes, and when it goes off, remove the foil and return the bread to the oven for 5 more minutes to allow the exterior to get nice and crusty. Then it’ll be revived and ready to eat! The story alternates between the present and past, and while I do think the dual-timeline trend is a bit played out, it's executed more effectively here than in others I’ve read. The “present” is focused on Gillian, who seeks refuge in her family home after a crushing betrayal by the man she loves. After Gillian discovers an old photo of her grandmother with a Nazi officer, we get glimpses of Vivian's past as she reveals long-held secrets of her life during World War II. Vivian’s story of survival demonstrates the strength and character of the people who lived through the horrors that abounded in Europe throughout the war. Some might find parts of this book a bit predictable, but it had enough unexpected twists and turns to keep me hooked till the end. Ultimately, A Fire Sparkling is a poignant testament to unconditional love and what we are willing to sacrifice for it. It's also a good reminder that there is often so much more to a story than we ever get to hear.
