February 14, 2022 [View Online]( Happy Valentine's Day! Monday may not be the most romantic day of the week, but we shouldn’t let that deter us from celebrating the people (and creatures) we love today. Get in the spirit with [my Valentine’s with Jillee playlist](—it's a mix of some of my all-time favorite love songs, plus picks from the OGT Team and readers. In Today's Good Thing, we're talking about another thing I love: saving time and money. I'm sharing 9 simple and affordable ways to improve the organization of your home. Enjoy! Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 9 Cheap And Easy Ways To Get More Organized [Photos of quick and easy organizing tips.]( These clever tips will help you get more organized without spending a lot of time or money. Grandma used to say there should be “a place for everything, and everything in its place,” and as usual, she was right. The better organized your home is, the more functional it is, and a functional home can save you time and effort every day. It’s all too easy to spend vast quantities of your time and money trying to organize your home, but you shouldn’t have to. In fact, a lot of the organizing projects I do in my own home are limited to the spare 5- or 10-minute windows I can squeeze them in during the day. On top of that, I always try to make use of stuff I already have around the house before I go out and buy something new. (My repurposed and salvaged organizers may not grace the pages of Better Homes and Gardens any time soon, but hey—it gets the job done and keeps money in my pocket!) In order to demonstrate just how quick and easy organizing can be, I put together a list of some of my favorite resourceful organizing ideas to share with you today. I have no doubt that these 9 quick, easy, and inexpensive hacks will help in your efforts to get more organized around the house! Check them out at the link below. Nothing is liable to make me irrationally angry more than trying to clean a bunch of gunk stuck to the blades of my blender cup. It’s never anything but awkward and difficult, and it makes me feel like I’m wasting my time and effort on a fruitless endeavor. (I barely have enough time for fruitful endeavors, let alone fruitless ones!) Luckily, there’s an easier way to clean a blender cup than reaching in with a scrubber and doing it by hand. The key is to recruit your blender to clean itself. Just pour a few cups of warm water into the blender, add a few drops of dish soap, then put the lid on and set it on the base. Pulse the blender a few times, then rinse it out. You can also use this method to clean your food processor. As with a blender, you just want to be careful with how much soap and water you add so it doesn’t foam up and overflow. As for an immersion blender, just pour some warm water and a few drops of soap into a container, whiz the immersion blender in it, and rinse. STAY SAFE OUT THERE Why Precious Metal Scams Are On The Rise [A photo of gold and silver coins.]( Fear and uncertainty aren’t great for decision-making, and scammers are taking advantage. Between the pandemic, inflation, and climate change, there’s plenty for people to be nervous about today. And when people get nervous, they become easy marks for scammers who use fear to manipulate people into giving them money. One fear-based scheme that has been especially popular [during the pandemic]( involves precious metals. In these operations, salespeople persuade their victims to move their savings out of safer, more traditional investments in order to invest it in gold or silver coins. The scammers do this by insisting that these investments will be far safer when the economy, government, or society "collapses," which they insist is imminent. But not only are the coins often marked up as high as 300% of their value, but the coins often have low liquidity and come with hidden or extra fees for administration, handling, storage, etc. Victims of these scams often lose most of their money the moment they make the transaction. To avoid becoming a victim of schemes like these, don’t make financial decisions out of fear or pressure. Also, take the time to verify the legitimacy of any dealer or broker before agreeing to work with them. If you’re in North America, you can use [this NASAA search tool]( to look up your local securities regulator, who can give you information about their registration and history. JILLEE'S PICK 28 February Flowers [Photos of various artworks from the ]( While I consider myself more of a doodler than a “serious artist,” I’ve always enjoyed creating things, whether it’s art or or some other form of self-expression. And as you know, I also love flowers, so I was very excited when I came across a collective art project on Instagram that is combining creativity and flowers all month long. The project is #28FebruaryFlowers, organized by Instagram user Amanda Evanston Freund ([@amanda_evanston](). She has shared [prompts for every day in February](, and invited anyone to participate by using the prompt of the day to make something creative. Participants are encouraged to share their creations on Instagram with the hashtag #28FebruaryFlowers. I’ve been really enjoying scrolling through the project’s hashtag and seeing all the different mediums and styles of art. I can't believe how creative people are, and I love seeing all the supportive comments the participants leave on each other’s posts. If you want to participate, there are still plenty of February flowers left to create! MONDAY MOTIVATION Lasting Love Is A Series Of Choices "A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person." - Mignon McLaughlin Dave and I got engaged on Valentine’s Day, 35 years ago today. Even though it was extremely cold out—it was February in North Dakota, after all—I insisted on cooking Chateaubriand for us on my tiny Weber grill out on the balcony of my apartment, and Dave got down on one knee and proposed. Shortly after, we went to California to visit my family and they threw a beach party in Dave’s honor. At one point during the party, Dave and I slipped off down the beach and climbed up on one of the empty lifeguard stands. We kissed and kissed to a soundtrack of crashing waves, both head over heels in love. Much later on, after four kids, many arguments, a year of separation, and my 78-days in residential treatment, I found myself thinking about that night on the beach as I surveyed the state of my marriage. Despite all that needed fixing, I clung to the memory of those carefree kids kissing on the lifeguard chair—we were them once, and maybe we could be again. The work hasn't been easy, but I can honestly say I’m even more in love today than I was that day on the beach. We’ve been through incredibly difficult times together, but we’ve worked hard to grow as a couple and keep choosing each other over and over. Choice, I think, is as strong a "glue" as any to hold a relationship together. Anyone can fall in love on a moonlit beach, but staying in love takes dedication. A FEW MORE THINGS...
