February 11, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! It pains me to throw away food, because it feels like I’m throwing away both the food and the money I used to buy it. If you feel the same, Today’s Good Thing can help. I’m sharing 13 simple tips that can help you waste less food and save more money. And speaking of saving money, today’s newsletter also features a couple of great deals you can score this weekend thanks to the Super Bowl. Regardless of which side you’ll be rooting for (or whether you’ll be watching at all), we’re all on the same team when it comes to appreciating a good deal. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 13 Ways To Save Money By Wasting Less Food [Photos of tips for wasting less food.]( Use these 13 simple tips for shopping, cooking, and eating to waste less and save more. Food waste has been one of my biggest pet peeves for a long time now, and I’m sure many of you can relate. It pains me to throw out food that went bad before we got around to eating it, not to mention that it feels like I’m throwing a handful of cash into the trash can every time I do. According to the USDA, the average American household throws out about $900 worth of food every year. That’s a LOT of money to be putting in the garbage, and I’m sure we could all come up with several dozen ways we could put that money to good use! The good news is that we can start saving that money (or at least working toward saving it) just by making a few simple changes to our shopping, cooking, and eating habits. I’ve got 13 tips for avoiding food waste to share with you today, each of which can help you make the most of the food you buy. You can check out my simple tips that will help you stop wasting food—and keep more money in your pocket at the same time—by following the link below. You could put “clean the fridge” on your spring cleaning to-do list in a month or two, but why wait? Getting it done now means one less “deep cleaning” task to worry about during spring cleaning, plus you’ll free up some valuable fridge space, which means more room for snacks for the big game. Sounds like a win-win to me! I suggest tackling this project in 4 steps: 1. Empty It Out. It's hard to clean your fridge around a bunch of food, so I recommend starting by emptying it out. It will make cleaning quicker and easier, and your food will be fine as long as it’s not out of the fridge for [more than 2 hours](. 2. Wipe Everything Clean. I find that a microfiber cloth dampened with warm water is usually all I need to clean up any sticky messes or food crumbs lurking inside my fridge. [Check out these tips]( for more advice on making this part of the process painless. 3. Add Liners. Putting liners—like [these DIY ones I made out of placemats](—in your fridge can make it easier to clean up any spills or drips that may occur inside your fridge in the future. And with your fridge empty and freshly cleaned, there’s not a more convenient time to line your fridge’s shelves and bins! 4. Organize It. Once your fridge is clean and you've added liners if desired, it’s time to replace all that food you took out earlier. To replace it in a more organized and functional manner, try [this fridge organization hack](—it proved invaluable in tidying up my own fridge, and I’m sure it’ll help yours too! SAVE MONEY 2 Great Deals You Can Snag This Weekend [A photo of super bowl snacks.]( Whether or not you’ll be watching it, these 2 Super Bowl-related deals are worth knowing about. 1. Snacks And Drinks. No Super Bowl watch party would be complete without snacks, and grocery stores will be vying for your attention by offering great deals on snack foods, sodas, and other game day fare this weekend. Whether you plan on stocking up on snacks for the occasion or just to enjoy on your own, you’re sure to score some sweet deals if you do in the next couple of days. 2. Televisions. These deals may be geared toward football fans dreaming of witnessing their team win the championship on a huge screen in 4K resolution, but anyone can take advantage of sales on new TVs this weekend. Check out some of the [best Super Bowl TV deals of 2022]( on TechRadar—if you’ve been wanting to upgrade your current TV and are just waiting for the right price, you just might find it there. JILLEE'S PICK Supernatural Romance In A Discovery Of Witches [Still photos from the TV series ]( Fans of fantasy, romance, and historical fiction can all find something to enjoy in the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. The series has been on my radar for a while, and although I haven’t gotten around to reading them yet, our photographer Kaitlyn insisted that I needed to read the books and watch the TV adaptation too. Each season of [A Discovery of Witches]( follows one book in the trilogy, and Kaitlyn, who is partway through Season 2, assures me that both the books and show are excellent. The story follows "reluctant witch" Diana Bishop as she forms an unlikely alliance (and romance) with vampire Matthew Clairmont while attempting to locate an enchanted manuscript. Deborah Harkness, the author of the trilogy and executive producer on the show, uses her expertise as a science historian to infuse her fantasy world with real science and history. Matthew Clairmont is 1,500+ years old, so his past is full of historical nuggets (as is the couple's time-traveling sojourn to Elizabethan London in Season 2). Here’s more about the appeal of A Discovery of Witches, in Kaitlyn’s own words: “On top of appealing to fantasy, historical fiction, and science fiction fans, Matthew and Diana’s search for the enchanted book will appeal to mystery fans too. The lead actors Teresa Palmer (Diana) and Matthew Goode (Matthew) have great chemistry together, and the cinematography, set design, and costumes are all incredible.” A Discovery of Witches is streaming on [AMC+](, Shudder, and Sundance Now, or you can stream it on [Amazon Prime Video]( with a subscription to any of the same. IN THE LOOP Superb Owl Sunday [A photo of an owl with ]( It’s not hard to imagine heading to Google to look up the start time or lineups for Sunday’s big game and not noticing you accidentally put the space in the wrong place. In fact, it happens all the time—searches for the phrase “superb owl” spike around the same date as the Super Bowl every year. This annual wave of search snafus has grown into a fully fledged social media trend over the past few years. It’s now common to see nature and wildlife conservancies, natural history museums, and other organizations posting owl-related content on their social media channels throughout Super Bowl weekend. In 2020, Google even set up an Easter egg for folks who searched for “superb owl” on accident—they still saw information about the game, but it was accompanied by a graphic of an owl with a football-shaped head. Some people who don’t care about sports post about owls to demonstrate their lack of interest in the game, while some football fans insist the owl joke is either corny, played out, or both. But football isn’t going away, nor are owls becoming less exceptional, so I say let Super Bowls and superb owls coexist in harmony. A FEW MORE THINGS...
