PLUS: A clever money-saving food storage tip, how your phone can help you read small text, and more. January 25, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! If you're all too familiar with waking up feeling stiff in your hips and/or back, Today’s Good Thing may have the solution. I’ll tell you all about the simple and inexpensive item that made all the difference for me, because I know that other side sleepers could benefit from it too. Also in today’s newsletter, learn how to use your phone to make tiny text easier to read. (It does seem a bit ironic that our phones can make other things more readable when they themselves are so frequently hard to read, but we’ll take what we can get.) Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Every Side Sleeper Should Have One Of These [A photo of Jillee with her knee pillow.]( Like many side sleepers, I was waking up with aches in my back and hips—until I tried this. While estimates suggest that 40% of people primarily sleep on their side, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the most beneficial sleeping position. In fact, sleeping on your side can pull your hips and spine out of alignment and lead to hip and back aches, and that’s what I was dealing with when I decided to start looking for a solution. After trying to keep my hips aligned overnight by sleeping with a standard pillow between my knees, then a body pillow after that, I figured I should probably look into getting a proper knee pillow. I ended up buying the [Everlasting Comfort memory foam knee pillow]( on Amazon, and it ended up being worth every penny. The pillow is 100% memory foam and provides firm support that keeps my hips in alignment. I also appreciate the removable strap that I can attach to my leg to keep the pillow in place overnight. After many months of using it, I wonder how I ever lived without it! I rarely wake up with back pain now, and it's a wonderful feeling. Dave decided that he needed one too, and now he loves it as much as I do. And judging by how well they’ve kept their shape, I have no doubt they'll last for a long time. If you’re a side sleeper or someone that wakes up with hip or back pain, I highly recommend giving this knee pillow a try—it’s a small price to pay to wake up pain-free! [Read my full review](. Whether you’re trying to read the menu in a dark restaurant or the fine print in a legal contract, being able to magnify the text can make it a lot easier to read. You probably don’t keep one on you (not unless you're a Sherlock Holmes cosplay enthusiast), but the good news is that you don’t have to. Magnifying is one of your phone’s many useful capabilities, and once you know how to use it, you’ll never have to resort to squinting to read minute text. For iPhone users, you'll have to add the magnifier tool to your Control Center first. Go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls, then tap the plus sign next to Magnifier. Open the Control Center either by swiping down from the top right (for phones with Face ID) or up from the bottom (for phones with a Home button). Tap the Magnifier icon to use it, and tap the Flashlight icon if you need more light. Android Users: While Android does have built-in Magnification as an Accessibility feature, this magnifies the content displayed on your screen rather than what’s physically in front of you. However, there are several well-reviewed magnifying glass apps you can download for free in the Google Play store, like [Magnifier + Flashlight](. COOKING Keep Your Food Fresh With A Shower Cap [A photo of bowls covered in shower caps.]( Reusable wraps make it easy to cut down on waste, and this one is cheap and widely available. I’m always interested in exploring new ways to cut down on household waste, particularly in the kitchen. I was looking at some different reusable food wraps online recently when I noticed that certain styles have a strong resemblance to shower caps. It made sense to me the more I thought about it, because the elastic band would be able to fit snugly over containers of all shapes and sizes. Plus, the whole point of the cap is to keep moisture out, which means the material is likely to keep air out too. So instead of spending more on one of these shower cap-inspired food wraps, why not save some money by using an actual shower cap instead? Just wrap it over a bowl, pot, or container to keep moisture, air, and food odors out, then give it a good rinse afterward and reuse it again and again. JILLEE'S PICK A Captivating Rock ‘N’ Roll Fantasy [The front cover of ]( Let me start with an embarrassing confession—I started [Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid]( knowing it was a fictional story about the rock music scene in the ‘70s, but it was so vivid and detailed that by the time I finished it, I had all but forgotten it was fiction. I had to search "Daisy & The Six" online to be absolutely sure. I’ve read several of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books that have blown me away with how engaging they are, and Daisy Jones is no exception. While a small garage band skyrocketing to international fame isn't the most original concept, Reid's characters are so genuine, messy, and intriguingly complex that it hardly matters. As a teenager during the ‘70s, reading this book was like getting into a time machine and going right back to that magical time in music. Reid perfectly captures the genius and decadence and wild creativity of the music scene in that era, and getting to “experience” it through this story was utterly captivating. That time in music was very much a time of “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll,” so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that this book depicts those things. However, it doesn’t depict those things in detail, and I don’t think I would have enjoyed this book as much if it had, so I thought Reid handled that aspect brilliantly. One final note: if you like audiobooks, this one is excellent—it has a full cast that does an amazing job (especially Jennifer Beals as Daisy!) Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
