TODAY'S GOOD THING 7 Coat Closet Hacks That Will Make Yours More Functional [Photos of various coat closet hacks.]( If you're tired of rummaging through an overcrowded coat closet, these 7 tips can help. When your foyer or entryway gets messy, it’s easy to default to treating your coat closet like one big junk drawer. It’s right there, after all, so it often feels more convenient to just shove things into the closet so they're out of sight, rather than take the time to put them away in another area of the house. I say it feels more convenient because in reality, it isn’t very convenient at all in the long run. In fact, it can turn into a real headache, especially when you find yourself rummaging through all that junk when you’re in a hurry and can’t find what you need. However, there’s hope for those whose coat closets have come to contain more clutter than coats. All you need are a few tips and tricks and a bit of determination, and you’ll have that closet back in good working order in no time, and I’ve got those tips and tricks covered for you already. Whether your coat closet is spacious or cramped, or whether you have one or a few of them, the 7 coat closet hacks I’ve put together for you will make it easier to keep them free of clutter and fully functional. We’ve all seen the filth that can accumulate behind and underneath those heavy pieces of furniture that never get moved, and it’s not pretty. The best way to keep the filth to a minimum is to move your furniture every so often so you can clean those areas, and it’s actually easier to move them than it might sound! If the furniture is on carpet, put a piece of cardboard underneath each leg by tipping it backward and forward and sliding the cardboard underneath. Once all the legs have cardboard underneath them, you should have no problem sliding the furniture across the carpet to clean behind and underneath it. If the furniture you want to move is on wood or tile floors, use towels or dish rags instead of cardboard for a smoother slide. Do this every once in a while to remove hair, dust, and dirt, and your whole home will be cleaner for it. STAY SAFE OUT THERE Don’t Waste Money On Bogus Weight Loss Products [Photos of Jillee exercising.]( If you’re trying to lose weight, make sure you’re not also losing money on products that don’t work. Of all the fraud and schemes related to healthcare, the ones that generate the most complaints to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are fake weight loss products and programs. The weight loss industry brings in nearly $70 billion every year, making it a very attractive industry for con artists and fraudsters. While some of these products simply don’t work as advertised, others can be hazardous to your health. The USDA has investigated weight loss products that turned out to contain controlled or illegal substances, some of which had serious side effects like raising the risk of heart attack and stroke. To avoid getting ripped off or worse, here are some warning signs to look out for when it comes to weight loss programs and products: • Grandiose claims, like “revolutionary,” “miraculous,” or “scientific breakthrough.” • Specific promises, like “You’ll lose X pounds a week!” • Claims that are too good to be true, like “Eat whatever you want and still lose weight!” If you’re interested in losing weight, the safest way to do it is through diet and exercise. Seek the advice of a doctor, dietician, or nutritionist for trustworthy guidance, and don’t waste your money on things like patches or wraps. According to the FTC, “nothing you wear or apply to the skin can cause substantial weight loss.” JILLEE'S PICK Treat Yourself To Better Bowel Movements [A photo of a woman with her feet propped up on a Squatty Potty toilet stool.]( Perhaps you’ve heard of the [Squatty Potty]( before—after all, their outlandish [“pooping unicorn” video]( took YouTube by storm in 2015. But you may not be aware of the very real benefits you can enjoy by using one of these so-called “toilet stools” during bowel movements. The Squatty Potty is an FDA-certified “defecation postural modification device,” which has been shown in clinical studies to reduce straining and bowel movement duration, while also helping to evacuate the bowels more completely. It works by putting you into more of a squatting position, which straightens the colon-to-anus “pipeline” and makes it easier to do your business. Anyone who has experienced severe constipation can tell you how miserable and painful it can be, and it’s pretty incredible that something as simple as using a toilet stool can help prevent it. And less straining on the toilet means you’ll also be less likely to develop hemorrhoids, another miserable and painful condition. With all the benefits that the Squatty Potty offers and its relatively inexpensive price point—the Original 7” goes for just $25—there’s no reason not to experience the difference for yourself. [See the Squatty Potty at Target ➜]( MONDAY MOTIVATION You Already Have The Answers As social creatures, we instinctively compare and contrast ourselves to the people around us, but it’s important to understand that there are limits to how useful other people's actions, words, and beliefs can be. We may be social creatures, but we’re also individuals with different wants and needs. Social comparison can be useful for understanding your place in the world, but it’s less useful when it comes to your emotional fulfillment. Someone else’s measure of being happy or fulfilled isn’t the same as yours, and yet we evaluate ourselves using other people’s rubrics all too often. Before I went into treatment for addiction, I had only begun drinking fairly recently at after-work drinks with my coworkers. At first, it was thrilling to rebel against the religion I raised was in and my own strait-laced history. And the people around me were successful, interesting, and seemed perfectly happy, so I assumed I was happy too. But the rebellion isn’t happiness, nor is the camaraderie of after-work drinks. I wanted to feel happy and free, and I looked for those feelings in my work, in socializing, and at the bottom of every glass at Happy Hour, but all I ended up finding was a self-destructive cycle of apathy and torment. When we defer to other people’s ideas of happiness and success, we doom ourselves to missing the mark. The answer to what truly fulfills you is already inside you, but you have to learn to listen to your inner voice in order to hear it. Trust in the wisdom of your inner voice, and it will never lead you astray. A FEW MORE THINGS... Go Ahead, Make Someone’s Day: It’s National Compliment Day, which celebrates the act of speaking up about the ways we admire and appreciate each other. Compliments not only make the recipient feel good, but they make the giver feel good about making someone else feel good too, so it’s a win-win. In honor of the occasion, join me in giving compliments to at least 3 people today. On This Day: In 1848, carpenter [James W. Marshall]( discovered gold in the water wheel at Sutter’s Mill, a lumber mill he was helping to build in Coloma, California. The news of his discovery marked the start of the [California Gold Rush](, which led to rapid population growth and put California on the fast-track to statehood. What did you think of today's email?
