3 accessories every Instant Pot user should consider, the best homemade spray starch, and more. January 5, 2022 [View Online]( Good morning! When you're used to doing something a certain way, it can be easy to overlook a better way to do it. That was the case when I learned the shockingly simple makeup tip featured in Today’s Good Thing—it seems so obvious now that I wonder how it never occurred to me before. And speaking of better ways to do things, the latest Poll of the Week is about the polarizing annual tradition of resolving to better oneself throughout the coming year. If you’ve got feelings about New Year’s resolutions, proceed to this week’s poll to make them known. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING The Best Thing To Do First When You Put On Makeup [Photos of Jillee putting on makeup.]( I don't make a lot of changes to my everyday makeup routine, but this one was a no-brainer. For decades, I started my everyday makeup routine by applying my foundation first, mainly because I thought that was the way you were “supposed” to do it. But when I learned about all the benefits of starting with your eye makeup first, I decided to make the switch, and now I wish I had been doing it this way all along! Here are 4 reasons why putting on your eye makeup first just makes good sense: 1. Control And Balance. When we look at another person’s face, we instinctively look at their eyes first, so it makes sense to focus your efforts there first as well. Plus, starting with your eye makeup makes it easier to achieve a balanced look. If you start with a bold or dramatic eye, you can balance it with subtle lip and cheek colors, or vice versa. 2. Less Mess. Before I started doing my eye makeup first, I would inevitably end up with bits of eyeshadow or mascara under my eyes, and it was impossible to clean it up without erasing my foundation or leaving smudges behind. But when you start with eye makeup, you can clean up the fallout without worry. 3. Less Foundation. When you start your makeup with foundation, it’s easy to apply more than you need, causing it to look thick and cake-y—not the sort of look most of us are hoping for. But when you apply foundation after your eye makeup, you’re more likely to use less and achieve a more natural and vibrant look. 4. No More Backtracking. The best part about doing your eye makeup first is that it eliminates any need to backtrack. There’s no fallout to clean up and no need to adjust your foundation or put on more concealer. Ultimately, you’ll spend less time in front of the mirror and can head out the door with confidence. When it comes to everyday wear, my husband Dave is all about comfort and practicality, though he’ll (grudgingly) wear a patterned button-up if we’re going out. But when it comes to his suit-and-tie attire for work or church, Dave goes to great lengths to ensure his shirts are perfectly neat, clean, and crisp. (He’s an enigma like that!) The secret to the crispness of his shirts is the spray starch he uses when he irons them. Having DIYed pretty much every other laundry product we use, I challenged myself to make a spray starch that would earn Dave’s stamp of approval. Not only was it surprisingly easy to do, but it works just as well as the store-bought stuff. Here’s how to make it: Pour 2 cups of warm water into a jar with a tight fitting lid, then add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and 1-2 drops of your favorite essential oil, if desired. Screw the lid onto the jar, then shake it until the cornstarch has dissolved completely. Pour the finished starch mixture into a [spray bottle](. To use it, spray fabrics lightly as you iron them to achieve a crisp, neat look. A little bit goes a long way with this stuff, so start with a light spritz and add more if necessary. Also, be sure to give the bottle a shake before each use to remix anything that might have settled or separated. Glitter. In case you weren’t aware, “Y2K beauty” made a big comeback in 2021, especially glittery eye makeup, and it looks like it will continue to be popular in 2022. To incorporate some glitter into your look, step away from the loose glitter—glitter-infused sticks, cream, and shadows are a lot less messy. 2. Lined Lips. Well-defined lips are making a comeback, albeit with a bit more restraint. The new iteration of lined lips features a neutral lipstick paired with a liner just a shade or two darker to make lips look fuller without overdoing it. Apply your lipstick first, then use a coordinating liner to add definition along the edges. 3. Statement Blush. Blush has gotten experimental over the past several months thanks to its popularity with makeup fans on TikTok. It even seems as though blush may be the new bronzer—blush is no longer limited to cheeks, so you might see blush across noses and above cheekbones throughout the year. JILLEE'S PICK 3 Accessories That Instant Pot Newbies Should Consider [Photos of sealing rings, a pressure cooker sling, and an air fryer Instant Pot lid.]( If you unwrapped a new Instant Pot during the holidays, first of all, lucky you! Secondly, you may be wondering if you immediately need to go out and buy a bunch of accessories to make the most of it. Rest assured that you do not need to go to your nearest Bed Bath & Beyond and clear out their stock of pressure cooker gizmos. However, there are a few that may eventually come in handy, so I wanted to highlight my top 3 recommendations for accessories for new Instant Pot users. 1. [Extra Sealing Rings.]( The silicone sealing ring that sits inside the lid of your Instant Pot will absorb food flavors and aromas over time, not to mention eventually wear out. That’s why it’s smart to keep a couple of extras on hand. That way, you can have one ring for savory foods, one for desserts, and an extra just in case. 2. [Pressure Cooker Sling.]( The OXO Good Grips Pressure Cooker Bakeware Sling is one of my all-time favorite Instant Pot accessories. I use it every time I make cheesecake to lower the pan into the pot and lift it out after cooking. And the base of the sling is so tall that you can even use it as a trivet to keep food or pans out of your cooking liquid. 3. [Air Fryer Lid.]( With the new air fryer lid, anyone with an Instant Pot can now enjoy crispy air fryer goodness without having to purchase yet another kitchen appliance. The air fryer lid will allow you to use your standard 6-quart Duo, Duo Plus, or Ultra to make deliciously crispy wings, fries, and more.
