3 things you can clean in under a minute, what you need to know about car warranty robocalls, and more. December 27, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! If youâve ever wondered whether you ought to wrap something in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, Todayâs Good Thing is for you. It will serve as a helpful refresher about the 5 most common types of food storage materials, including when to use them and when to avoid them. Also in todayâs newsletter, Iâm sharing another Monday Motivation message. This week Iâm focusing on the merits of venturing outside our comfort zone, and what we stand to gain when weâre willing to leave the familiar behind. Jillee DAYS UNTIL ð New Year's Day: 5 TODAY'S GOOD THING 5 Common Food Storage Materials And What To Use Them For [Photos of parchment paper, tin foil, freezer paper, and wax paper.]( From plastic wrap to parchment paper, find out what to use them for and when to avoid them. 1. Parchment Paper. Thanks to its heat-safe and nonstick properties, parchment paper is ideal for use in baking. Itâs also useful for other kitchen tasks too, like rolling out dough without it sticking to your countertop, or for creating individual pouches for fish or chicken that will retain moisture during cooking.
2. Wax Paper. This thin paper is coated in food-grade wax, which is not heat-safe and should not be used in an oven. But wax paper is great for keeping counters clean when working with messy foods like melted chocolate, and since itâs more breathable than plastic, it's often used to keep cheese fresh without trapping gases that can make it smelly or slimy.
3. Aluminum Foil. Unlike wax paper, aluminum foil isnât breathable, which makes it useful for wrapping foods youâre going to freeze. It will prevent the food from drying out and prevent other odors or flavors from getting in. Perhaps the best thing about aluminum foil is its high heat toleranceâuse it to cover roasts, wrap ribs, or line pans for easy cleanup.
4. Plastic Wrap. If youâre putting food in your fridge to keep it fresh, plastic wrap is a good choice. You can cover open containers with it, or even wrap sturdy foods in plastic wrap alone. Itâs very flexible and can conform to any shape, but its propensity for sticking to itself can be frustrating (though putting it in your fridge for a few minutes can help!)
5. Freezer Paper. Freezer paper, which is coated in a thin layer of plastic on one side, was designed for wrapping and freezing meat. The plastic side is meant to face the meat to help seal in moisture. Freezer paper is sometimes used to make stencils for quilting, because if you iron the paper side, the plastic side will melt slightly and create a temporary bond with fabrics. Thatâs all you need to knock out any of these 3 cleaning tasks. 1. Laundry Baskets. I hate seeing dust, hair, and other debris at the bottom of an empty laundry basket, but on the bright side, cleaning it out makes a great one-minute cleaning project. Just grab a damp cloth and make your way around the house wiping out the bottoms of your laundry baskets.
2. TV Remotes. The next time youâre catching up on your shows, take a minute to clean your TV remotes. Add equal amounts of water and rubbing alcohol to a small dish, then dampen a cloth with the diluted alcohol and use it to wipe down your remote. Dip a cotton swab into the solution to remove any stubborn gunk stuck between the buttons.
3. Entryway. Use your spare minute to tidy up your entryway. Hang up coats, hats, and bags, and put discarded shoes where they belong. For bonus points, quickly sweep up any stray dirt, leaves, or other debris that has gotten tracked inside. STAY SAFE OUT THERE So You Keep Getting Calls About Your Car's Warranty? [Photos of Jillee on the phone.]( These types of robocalls are so common, you may have already received one (or more!) If you live in the US and own a vehicle of some kind, you may be familiar with robocalls that mention your carâs warranty. [According to a recent report]( from the call-blocking service RoboKiller, vehicle warranty robocalls are on track to become the single largest phone scam since they began tracking data on them in 2017. The purpose of these car warranty calls is to prey on your fear of one day needing an expensive car repair that you won't be able to afford if it isn't covered under your warranty. The calls often include pre-recorded warnings that your coverage is about to expire and that you should purchase an extended warranty before it's too late. The first thing to know about these schemes is that no one can âextendâ your carâs warranty but the manufacturer. These calls usually come either from scammers who want to take your money and run, or a third-party company, many of which are notorious for having all sorts of exclusions hidden in their fine print. The second thing to know is that the call may be fraudulent even if they have accurate information about your car. Your car's make and model information is apparently fairly easy for scammers to get their hands on, so don't let their access to up-to-date information fool you into assuming the offer is legit. JILLEE'S PICK Doormats That Make A Statement [Photos of various doormats.]( I swap out my doormat more often than I care to admit, but I just canât help myself! Not only are there a lot of great designs out there, but many of them feature silly or relatable sayings that make them hard to resist. Here are a few of my favorite doormats Iâve seen on Etsy recently, in case youâre in the market for a doormat with some personality: • [No need to knock. We know youâre here. - The dogs](
• [Grandkids welcome (others tolerated)](
• [Please hide all packages from husband](
• [It was clean before you got here, I swear](
• [You are here](

However, it was only after moving to Bismarck, North Dakota in the dead of winter that I started having second thoughts about having ventured so readily outside of my comfort zone. During the first few weeks, I was so obviously homesick that the news director drove past my place on his way home every day just to make sure my car was there. And when I remember how tempted I was to call it quits and go home to my parents at the time, he had every right to worry whether I'd flown the coop! But Iâm glad I stuck it out, because it wasn't long before a handsome cameraman at the station named Dave (see above) caught my eye. Then I suddenly felt quite glad that I had not only taken the job, but also the leap outside my comfort zone it had required of me. We crave comfort and stability because they make us feel safe, which is why leaving our comfort zone in favor of the unknown can feel so scary. But it's important to remember that "unknown" doesn't always mean "bad." New experiences can be deeply enriching, and even shape us in ways we'll remember for the rest of our lives. If we aren't open to new experiences or willing to step outside of our cozy and familiar comfort zones, we may be denying ourselves opportunities to learn and grow. You donât have to abandon your comfort zone entirely, but try to step outside it once in a whileâyou never know what good things are out there waiting for you. A FEW MORE THINGS... Words Of Wisdom: "You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you'll discover will be wonderful. What you'll discover is yourself." - Alan Alda On This Day: In 1831, Charles Darwin joined the second voyage of the [HMS Beagle]( a journey that would last nearly 5 years and circumnavigate the globe. It was during this journey that Darwin began formulating his theory of evolution, and his account of the journey, [The Voyage of the Beagle]( gained him international fame as a writer.
