3 quick fixes for Thanksgiving food mishaps, how to disable read receipts on your texts, and more. November 23, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! First, I want to thank you for your kind comments about [my new skincare line]( that I announced yesterday. It's never easy to put yourself out there (especially when it includes sharing makeup-free photos of yourself!), so I’m very grateful to be part of this supportive community. As for today’s newsletter, there’s plenty of good stuff in store today. Today’s Good Thing features organizing tips you’re sure to love if you are as passionate about mason jars as I am, and a new Tech Tip Tuesday provides a primer about “read receipts” on texts (including how to turn them off if they’re fueling any text-related drama!) Jillee DAYS UNTIL 🦃 Thanksgiving: 2 🕎 Hanukkah: 5 🎄Christmas: 32 🎊 New Years: 39 TODAY'S GOOD THING 11 Ways To Use Mason Jars To Organize Everything [Photos of various uses for mason jars.]( Use these 11 tips to put your collection of mason jars to good use by organizing things around the house. While they’re probably best known for being used in canning and food storage, that’s just the tip of the iceberg of what mason jars are capable of. On top of being made of sturdy, easy-to-clean glass that allows you to see what’s inside, mason jars also have a charming farmhouse appeal that makes them nice to have out on display. And while mason jars may not occur to you as an obvious choice for keeping things organized around the house, I hope the ideas I have to share with you today will help you see them in a whole new light. I’ve put together a list of 11 brilliant and, more importantly, easy ways you can use mason jars to get more organized around the house. There are seemingly endless ways to use these iconic jars to keep things neat and tidy, whether in your kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, or beyond. As a mason jar enthusiast myself, I’ve used many of these organizing tips in my own house. They not only have the benefit of keeping things tidy, but it’s been a great way to put my jar collection (or at least a part of it) to good use so they aren’t just collecting dust on a shelf. Check out the list of 11 mason jar organizing tips below! Learn how to disable your read receipts. When iPhone or iPad users text other Apple device users, “read receipts” appear underneath each message that tell the sender when the recipient has read their latest message. Having this feature enabled can be useful if you want someone to know you've seen their message, but it doesn’t necessarily require a response. But not everyone enjoys this feature, especially those who are selective about responding to texts. It’s impossible to pretend you didn’t see someone’s message if the read receipt shows that you read it right away. (I don't condone lying, but I do understand not wanting to feel pressured to respond to any given text ASAP.) If the social implications of having read receipts enabled proves to be more stressful than beneficial, the good news is that it's easy to turn them off. Likewise, if you’ve had this feature turned off and want to give it another try, it’s just as easy to turn it back on. To enable or disable read receipts, go to Settings > Messages, then scroll down until you see the Send Read Receipts setting. Use the toggle on the right to turn it on or off, and that’s all there is to it! Android Users: Read receipts work in much the same way on Android phones, and are typically only displayed in text exchanges with people who use the same messaging app as you. To enable or disable read receipts, go to Settings > Chat features, Text messages, or Conversations, then look for the Read Receipts options. COOKING 3 Quick Fixes For Thanksgiving Food Mishaps [Photos of various food fixes.]( Don’t let last-minute issues derail your dinner—use these tips to fix them fast and no one will be the wiser. 1. Fix Too-Sweet Cranberry Sauce. Cranberry sauce is an important part of a traditional Thanksgiving meal because it’s bright and tangy flavor helps balance the richness of the other dishes. If your cranberry sauce isn’t giving you that tart and tangy kick, adding a splash of lemon juice will fix it right up. 2. Eliminate Gravy Lumps. There’s no excuse for bringing lumpy gravy to the table, especially when the solution is super simple and takes seconds to do. Just run your finished gravy through a fine mesh sieve or strainer to remove the lumps and ensure your gravy is silky-smooth. 3. Salvage Dubious Mashed Potatoes. From lumps to dryness and beyond, there are a multitude of issues that can affect mashed potatoes. If your mashed potatoes aren’t playing nice, spread them into a baking dish and top with bread crumbs, herbs, and Parmesan cheese. Bake until browned and serve as a tasty potato casserole. JILLEE'S PICK Love And Peril In Cold Mountain [The cover image for ]( The story of a wounded Confederate soldier's long journey home after leaving the war, [Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier]( held the top spot on the New York Times best-seller list for over a year after its release in 1997. I may not have gotten around to reading it until now, but better 20+ years late than never, right? If you enjoyed the [2003 movie adaptation]( starring Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, and Renée Zellweger (who won Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for her performance as Ruby Thewes), you’ll love the book too. While the story is engaging, for me it’s the gorgeously descriptive writing that makes Cold Mountain truly special. Charles Frazier’s descriptions of the people, land, and even the weather of the US South are sumptuous, as are the memorable nuggets of wisdom sprinkled throughout. (For example: “Marrying a woman for her beauty makes no more sense than eating a bird for its singing. But it’s a common mistake nonetheless.”) If you love classic literature as much as I do, this modern classic is certainly one that you won’t want to miss! But Amazon and social media users have found a way to get teachers the supplies they need so they can focus on what they do best: teaching! Amazon started their #ClearTheList social media campaign as a way to identify teachers who had an Amazon Wish List of needed classroom supplies. [Amazon “cleared the list” for hundreds of teachers]( around the country during the back-to-school season. But teachers have continued to use the #ClearTheList hashtag to share their wish lists on Twitter and Instagram, and everyday people—often total strangers—have been stepping in to clear their lists, and you can do it too! Just search #ClearTheList on social media, pick a list, and buy something. You can also find teachers who need supplies or funding for projects at [DonorsChoose.org](. Wherever you find them and however you choose to support them, helping a teacher in need is a great way to make a difference. A FEW MORE THINGS...
