A new iPhone feature that can save you time, a genius hack for tidier egg sandwiches, and more. November 16, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! Whether their partner was lost in the wash or they developed a hole, we all have a few old socks floating around the house somewhere. But rather than getting rid of them, why not give them a second life? You’ll learn 5 ways to put your old socks to good use in Today’s Good Thing (ideally after they’ve been washed). Also in today’s newsletter, I’m sharing an online resource for stretches and exercises in a new What In The World Wide Web. Stretching can be helpful when your muscles are feeling stiff, and for those of us who could use some guidance in that area, the website I’ll tell you about is a great place to get it. Jillee DAYS UNTIL 🦃 Thanksgiving: 9 🕎 Hanukkah: 12 🎄Christmas: 39 🎊 New Years: 46 TODAY'S GOOD THING 5 Ways To Put Your Old Socks To Good Use [Photos of various uses for old socks.]( From cleaning to keeping things organized, there are endless opportunities to utilize retired, single, or unwanted socks. 1. Secure Wrapping Paper Rolls. To keep wrapping paper securely rolled on its cardboard tube, try cutting off the cuff part of a crew sock and sliding it over the roll. The elastic in the sock will hold the roll together, making them easier to organize and reducing the risk of folding and tearing. 2. Cover Your Dry Mop. Recruit a sock as a reusable (and thus more eco-friendly) sweeping pad for your Swiffer Sweeper or other dry mop. Just stretch it over the base and get sweeping! If you happen to have a fuzzy sock, even better—those fuzzy fibers are great for trapping dust and hair. 3. Protect Shoes While Painting. Tired of ruining perfectly good shoes with accidental paint splatters while working on craft or home improvement projects? The next time you need to paint something, slide a pair of large or stretchy socks over your shoes to prevent paint from falling on them. 4. Prevent Foggy Windshields. Chilly weather outside and a warm body inside is a recipe for a fogged-up car windshield. To help keep your windshield fog-free, fill a couple of socks with silica kitty litter (a highly efficient moisture absorber), tie them off, and set them at the front of your car’s dashboard. 5. Make An Ice Pack. Whether you’re healing from an injury, suffering from inflammation, or are just plain accident-prone, the cooling effect of an ice pack can work wonders. Instead of rushing to the pharmacy to buy a cold pack, just fill a ziplock bag with ice and tuck it into a sock for cooling relief that isn’t painfully cold. Along with other features included in iOS 15, Apple’s latest software update for iPhones, there’s a new Live Text feature that can save you time and effort in passing along information via text message or email. This new feature uses your phone’s camera to scan text (both printed and handwritten!) and translate it into typed text in a flash. That means if you wrote down an important message, phone number, or address and need to send it to a friend, you no longer have to type it out yourself—the Live Text feature can do it for you. To use this feature in Messages, open an existing or new message and tap on the text field. The Scan Text option will pop up, then select it and position whatever text you want to scan in the frame at the bottom of your screen. Depending on the quality of the scan, you might have to clean the text up a bit, but it’ll still save you time! You can also use Live Text in the Camera app and copy the text to paste elsewhere. Just open the Camera app, position the text in frame, tap the Live Text button (a viewfinder square with 3 lines in it), and select which text you want to copy. You can also do this with photos you’ve already taken from within the Photos app. COOKING Egg Sandwiches With Runny Yolks And Less Mess [A GIF showing the inside of an egg sandwich.]( If you love runny egg yolks, you’re going to love this viral breakfast sandwich hack. TikTok users sure love a good breakfast sandwich, because this is the second breakfast sandwich hack that has found its way to me through the digital grapevine. But as someone who also loves a good breakfast sandwich, I can’t say I blame them, nor can I say I mind benefitting from their clever and delicious ideas. This latest one is a simple technique for making an “egg pocket” that you can put between slices of toast for an easy breakfast sandwich. The technique involves centering the yolks on the egg whites and surrounding them with cheese, so the yolks stay runny while the melted cheese helps prevent them from running too much. Here’s how it works: Spray a nonstick pan and a slotted spoon thoroughly with cooking spray, then pour two cracked eggs into the spoon while holding it over the pan. The whites will run through the spoon and onto the pan, then once they start to set, nestle the yolks into the center of the whites. Sprinkle shredded cheese around the yolks, then fold the edges of the whites over the yolks to form a neatly folded egg pocket. Then sandwich the pocket between pieces of toast and breakfast is served! To see it in action, [watch this video]( from TikTok user Josh Elkin ([@thejoshelkin](. JILLEE'S PICK The Book I’ve Waited 7 Years To Read Is Nearly Here [The cover image for ]( The 9th book in the Outlander series, which I’ve been waiting to read for 7 long years now, is nearly here! [Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone by Diana Gabaldon]( comes out next Tuesday the 23rd, and I don't think I could be any more excited about it. Since Outlander came out all the way back in 1991, I’ve read every new installment in the series as soon as it was released. With my excitement about the new book reaching a fever pitch, I feel like I understand how my daughter Britta must have felt each time a new Harry Potter book came out during the 2000s. (Admittedly, not only was I her chaperone for those midnight release parties, but I was nearly as excited as she was.) Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series has gained a whole new set of fans since the TV series started airing on Starz in 2014, which I think is wonderful. I just hope that fans of the show give the books a chance as well, because as with most book-to-screen adaptations, there's more detail, history, and story in the books to enjoy! While allowing anyone to add or edit content has its shortcomings, it also makes more information available to more people all over the world, and a lot of that information can be really useful. Take [MuscleWiki]( for example. In addition to providing information about the muscles in your body, you can also use it to search for exercises or stretches specific to certain muscles. Just click on a specific muscle on a diagram of a male or female body to learn more, no advanced anatomy vocabulary necessary. Since I don’t own barbells, dumbbells, or kettlebells, I’ve mainly been exploring the stretches tab so far. But I’ve been finding it quite useful, especially when I’ve been hunched over my laptop for too long and need to stretch out my neck and back. [Check out MuscleWiki]( if you could use some stretching or exercising know-how. A FEW MORE THINGS... Did You Know? The average person laughs about 10 times per day. And there are plenty of reasons to laugh it up as often as you want, like the fact that it can help reduce both stress hormones and blood pressure. Laughing is also known to release endorphins, which have pain- and stress-relieving qualities. (Have a funny movie or Youtube video you watch when you need a good laugh?
