The most delicious uses for taco seasoning, a must-make side for your holiday meals, and more. November 13, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! After Dave’s shaving mirror fell off the shower wall for the umpteenth time, I vowed that I would get that dang suction cup to stay on the wall or die trying. Well not really, but I am glad I cracked the code! I’ve broken down the secrets to suction cup success into 5 easy steps in Today’s Good Thing. Also in today’s newsletter, there’s a new Remember When about the forerunner to modern rewards programs. They may be more convenient today, but they’ll never be as satisfying as a full stamp book. Jillee DAYS UNTIL 🦃 Thanksgiving: 12 🕎 Hanukkah: 15 🎄Christmas: 42 🎊 New Years: 49 TODAY'S GOOD THING Problem Solved! How To Get Suction Cups To Stick [Photos of the process for installing a suction cup in a shower.]( The next time you need to put up a suction cup, follow these 5 simple steps to ensure it actually stays put. 1. Choose The Right Surface. The ideal surface for a suction cup is one that’s clean, flat, and completely smooth, such as glass, hard plastic, acrylic, Formica, and stainless steel. You can typically put suction cups on windows, mirrors, the front of your dishwasher, or the side of a metal file cabinet without running into any problems. 2. Clean The Surface (Twice). Clean the surface thoroughly with your preferred household cleaner, rinse, then dry it thoroughly with a lint-free cloth. When you’re done with that, wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol to remove any remaining traces of dirt or grime. 3. Clean The Suction Cup. Rinse the suction cup itself under warm water, then shake off the excess water. (Don’t dry it though—a bit of water on the inside of the cup can help prevent air pockets from forming.) The warm water will also help soften the material, making it easier to create a strong bond. 4. Press Firmly And Let It Set. Press the suction cup firmly against the surface, making sure there are no air bubbles trapped between the cup and the surface. After attaching the suction cup, leave it alone and avoid getting it wet for 24 hours. This will help ensure the cup and surface are fully bonded. 5. Check It Occasionally. Once your suction cup is stuck, press down on it from time to time to remove any air pockets that may try to form over time. Also, keep in mind that temperature and humidity changes—which are common in bathrooms and kitchens—can contribute to the formation of air pockets and cause the suction cup to pull away from the surface. [Read more ➜]( COOKING This Creamed Corn Is One Of My Favorite Holiday Sides [Photos of Jillee serving a dish of creamed corn.]( Made with real cream, milk, and cheese, this deliciously decadent creamed corn is worlds apart from the canned variety. This creamed corn has been a staple side dish at our holiday meals for the past several years, and once you try this creamy, cheesy corn dish for yourself, it might just become one of your favorites too. A couple of notes on the recipe: first, it’s definitely worth getting frozen shoepeg corn if you can find it, but regular frozen corn works just as well if you can’t. Second, I wanted to mention that I usually double this recipe (in a 9x13" dish rather than a 7x11" one) because most of us end up going back for seconds. Here's how to make it: Add 24 ounces of frozen shoepeg corn, 1 cup of heavy cream, 1 cup of milk, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of sugar to a saucepan and stir to combine. Bring the mixture to a boil on your stove, stirring frequently. Meanwhile, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in your microwave, then add 2 tablespoons of flour (or cornstarch to make it gluten free) and stir to make a roux with a paste-like consistency. When the cream and corn mixture starts to boil, add the roux and continue cooking for a few more minutes until thickened. Add white pepper to taste, along with more salt to taste if desired, then pour the thickened corn mixture into a 7×11” oven-safe baking dish. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of shredded Parmesan cheese in an even layer over the top of the corn, then bake at 350°F for 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the corn is warmed through. Snacks. Melissa from [Hungry Food Love]( had a bright idea to use taco seasoning to turn up the flavor on roasted chickpeas, but you could just as easily add it to almonds, popcorn, tater tots, oyster crackers, or any of your other snack time favorites. 2. Dips. I can rarely resist a good dip, and if that dip happens to be creamy, cheesy, and full of delicious taco-y flavor, then sign me up! This [Cream Cheese Bean Dip]( from Lil Luna looks so good, my mouth is watering as I type. 3. Casseroles, Bakes, And Skillets. Adding taco seasoning to casseroles, bakes, and skillets is an easy way to add flavor without having to guess about how much of which spices to use. I highly recommend this [One-Pan Enchilada Bake]( recipe from Damn Delicious—my family loves it every time I make it. 4. Soups. One of my favorite ways to use taco seasoning is in soups, like this [Chicken Taco Soup]( from my blog. Most taco soups come down to taco seasoning, canned beans, canned tomatoes, frozen or canned corn, and maybe a bell pepper or two. Toss in some rotisserie chicken and dig in! 5. Sauces And Dressings. My favorite easy, thrown-together lunch is a salad with corn, black beans, and whatever else happens to be in my fridge, topped with this zesty [Taco Salad Dressing]( from Frugal Farm Wife. You can also use taco seasoning in sauces, like this [Chili Mayo Sauce]( for fish tacos from Tiny Urban Kitchen. JILLEE'S PICK Get Car Advice From "The Car Mom" [An image of two phones whose screens are displaying the @the_car_mom Instagram account.]( Navigating the car world as a woman can be intimidating at best, and nightmarish at worst. While many salespeople and service professionals are kind and helpful to everyone, most women have probably encountered at least one who assumed they didn't understand anything about cars. But social media has made it easy to connect with experts sharing helpful advice on almost any topic, including all things car-related. One such expert is Kelly Stumpe, AKA The Car Mom ([@the_car_mom]( on Instagram, who’s both a car saleswoman and a Child Passenger Safety Technician. She shares a lot of great advice in her Stories, covering everything from negotiating to the latest car models. She even offers private consultations for those in need of specific help or advice. Hats off to Kelly for sharing her knowledge, and be sure to [check out her profile]( if you could use some car tips. REMEMBER WHEN “Green Stamps” And Other Trading Stamps [Photos of an S&H Green Stamps ]( Dave, my sister JoAnn, and I were reminiscing recently about the trading stamps our moms and grandmas used to collect. The “rewards points” of yesteryear, trading stamps were given out at participating grocery stores and gas stations in proportion to the amount of money you spent. Once you got your stamps, you would moisten the adhesive on the back and paste them into a book. Once filled, stamp books could be exchanged for housewares and other items at the trading stamp company’s redemption center, or through their mail-order catalog. Launched in 1896, S&H Green Stamps were the first and most popular trading stamps. But eventually there was plenty of competition in the trading stamps game, including Blue Chip Stamps and Greenbax Stamps. (Dave remembers his grandma collecting Greenbax Stamps from the local Piggly Wiggly in Fargo, North Dakota.) As for me, I have many fond memories of sitting at the kitchen table to help my mom paste stamps into her books, though I have absolutely no memory of what she exchanged them for. Today's loyalty programs and rewards cards may be a lot less work, but I doubt they'll create many fond memories for today's youth! A FEW MORE THINGS...
