The dark side of Facebook quizzes, a tip that makes cleaning less of a pain , and more. November 1,

The dark side of Facebook quizzes, a tip that makes cleaning less of a pain (literally), and more. November 1, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! It’s not only a new week, but a new month as well. Not only does that mean we’re entering the twilight of 2021, but it means there’s a fresh batch of deals to take advantage of too. I tell you about 5 things you can snag for a great price this month in Today’s Good Thing. Also in today’s newsletter, I've got a new Stay Safe Out There segment for you about the ulterior motives of some Facebook quizzes. I’ll tell you what you need to know in order to avoid taking a personality quiz that's far more revealing than you'd like it to be. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 5 Of The Best Things To Buy In November [Photos of clothes, a TV, baked goods, and a wedding dress.]( There’s plenty to look forward to this month, like Thanksgiving, holiday shopping season, and these 5 deals. 1. Clothing. You'll be able to find great deals on clothing well ahead of Black Friday this year, as many stores are starting sales early to avoid a pre-holiday crunch on top of the current global supply chain woes. (But if you’re looking for deals on winter apparel specifically, the best ones won’t arrive until December or January.) 2. Appliances. During the ever-popular fall appliance sale season, November often brings the very best deals on major appliances. So whether you’re in the market for a new fridge, oven, or vacuum, keep an eye out for great deals this month. 3. TVs And Other Electronics. Though Black Friday and Cyber Monday are likely to look quite different this year, there are sure to be excellent opportunities to score deals on electronics this month. Best Buy always has great prices on a wide variety of electronics brands, as does Target and other major retailers. 4. Baking Supplies. Baking staples like flour, sugar, nuts, and baking mixes always go on sale in November. Be sure to stock up if you plan to make treats for friends and family during the holidays. Also, keep an eye out for deals on cookware and bakeware around Veteran’s Day weekend (November 12-14). 5. Wedding Dresses. Bridal boutiques are clearing out their inventories of this year’s wedding dress styles to make room for next year’s new designs. If you’re getting married next year or are buying a dress for someone who is, you may be able to save some serious cash on a gown this month. One thing that I think everyone deals with as they get older is some form of back pain or stiffness. Personally, it seems like every year it takes less for me to tweak my back in a way that will have me moving around like the Tin Man for the next several days. Even picking up around the house can be a minefield because of all the bending and reaching involved. But I picked up a simple tip that can help prevent back strain during such tasks. It’s called the “golfer’s reach,” which simply involves lifting your leg up behind you as you bend down to reach for something. It’s not called the golfer’s reach for nothing—if you watch golfers on TV, you can see many of them use it when they pick up a ball off the ground. The movement helps to distribute the effort more evenly along your body so that it's not all concentrated on your spine. STAY SAFE OUT THERE The Dark Side Of Facebook Quizzes [An image showing Jillee looking at her phone with a shocked expression.]( We all love a good personality quiz, but some Facebook quizzes may reveal more than you realize. It seems like hackers and ne’er-do-wells get sneakier all the time, so I wasn't surprised to learn there’s yet another sneaky scheme going around on Facebook. This time, it seems criminals are using Facebook quizzes to gather information from unsuspecting users to gain access to their accounts. That seeming harmless quiz about “What Your Pet Says About You” may actually be a means to get you to give up the answers to your security questions. Not only can someone use that information to gain access to your Facebook account, but they could even gain access to financial accounts with similar security questions. But you can avoid falling into such a trap simply by familiarizing yourself with common security questions. Then you’ll be able to recognize them if you see them in a Facebook quiz, and can steer clear of that quiz to avoid giving out sensitive information. Here are some common security questions to look out for: • What is your mother’s maiden name? • What was the name of your first/current/favorite pet? • What is the name of the street you grew up on? • Where did you go to high school/college? • What city were you born in? You should also pay attention to what you’re agreeing to when you use plug-ins and applets on Facebook. It’s like Dad always said: “Read the fine print!” JILLEE'S PICK This Can Opener Is A Game Changer [An image of the Kitchen Mama Electric Can Opener.]( Over the past few years, I must have burned through half a dozen different can openers, each one as flimsy and problem-riddled as the others. I started to wonder whether it was genuinely too much to ask for a can opener that could open cans effectively for longer than a few months! But one day, as I was passing through the aisle of the store where they keep the kitchen tools, I noticed this [Kitchen Mama Electric Can Opener](. At first I couldn’t even imagine how it would work, but I was frustrated enough by my bad luck with manual can openers that I was willing to give this electric one a try. Luckily for me, it turned out to be the best money I’ve spent in a while! Once I figured out how to use it, I dug around for a can that was past its "best by" date to give it a whirl. Not only was it fun to watch it spin around the can of its own accord, but it made very clean cuts too—much better than any manual opener I’ve used! [See the Kitchen Mama Electric Can Opener on Amazon ➜]( MONDAY MOTIVATION The Art Of Weathering The Storms “Tough times don’t last, tough people do.” - Gregory Peck Everyone has those life lessons that, for whatever reason, they have to learn over and over again before they really start to sink in. For me, one of the lessons I’ve had to learn many times over is that while trying times are unavoidable, they don’t last forever. I’ve had to learn this particular lesson so many times because of a sort of mental shift that often takes place when I’m in a trying situation. My mind becomes convinced that the situation is both intolerable and interminable, despite the fact that neither have ever proven to be true in reality. And isn’t that a miracle in and of itself? I’ve survived every difficult season I’ve experienced in my life, even the ones I was certain I couldn’t withstand, and so have you. That doesn’t mean our suffering isn’t real or is somehow inconsequential, but it does mean that it isn’t permanent. If you’re going through a difficult time right now, make that knowledge your mantra. Remind yourself that the storm will eventually pass, and then with that in mind, give yourself permission to feel the way you feel right now. Our pain is rarely pleasant, but without it, our joy wouldn't be nearly as sweet. A FEW MORE THINGS... Monthly Observances: New month, new observances!
