Which bathroom items you should wash this weekend, 3 fun and easy ways to save, and more. October 15, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! Happy Friday to all, and I hope you’re looking forward to the weekend as much as I am. To start us off today, I have a brand new batch of cleaning tips for hard-to-reach (and thus hard-to-clean) spaces for you. Learn fast and effective ways to clean your coffee grinder, purse, and more in Today’s Good Thing. But don’t fret too much about the fact that today’s newsletter also has a new Weekend Cleaning Challenge too. I may be doubling down on cleaning, but this challenge (spoiler alert) may just be our easiest one yet, though no less important. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 5 Tricks For Hard-To-Clean Spaces That Make Life Easier [Photos of a coffee grinder, lint roller, butter knife, and spice cabinet.]( Adding to [these tips for hard-to-reach spaces]( these 7 cleaning tricks will make your life a lot easier. 1. Coffee Grinder. If you use your coffee grinder frequently to grind coffee beans or spices, it may be pretty grimy. Luckily, cleaning your grinder is as easy as grinding a handful of Rice Krispies for 30 seconds. The rice cereal bits will loosen up any gunk and even help absorb odors, leaving it clean and ready for grinding. 2. The Inside Of Your Bag. If shaking your bag, backpack, or work bag while holding it upside down doesn’t take care of all the dirt, crumbs, and other bits at the bottom, try using a lint roller. The sticky paper will pick up dirt, fragments of gum wrappers, pet hair, and anything else that may be lingering down there. 3. Cracks And Crevices. For cracks that are too narrow even for a cleaning cloth (such as the crack between your stovetop and kitchen counter or the tracks of windows), wrap a disinfecting wipe around a butter knife and use it carefully to wipe them out. 4. Underneath Appliances. Lying on the ground to get underneath your fridge, washing machine, or dryer is already not very fun, and most of the time you can only reach half the dirt and dust anyway. Instead, invest in a long, flat duster to clean up all of the dust under your appliances with ease. 5. Cabinet Corners. The elusive and dusty rear corners of your cabinets are easy to clean out using my favorite [simple DIY vacuum attachment](. Once you’ve made one, you can reuse it again and again for other hard-to-reach places, too. I have a sort of loose “cleaning routine” I try to repeat on a weekly basis, but there’s nothing strict about my approach. Some weeks are just busier than others, and getting frustrated because I didn’t have enough time to scrub the toilet bowls or vacuum the stairs doesn’t help me or anyone else. When I’m feeling stretched a bit thin, one thing I like to do is knock out a quick and easy task that isn’t normally part of my cleaning routine. That way, I still feel a sense of accomplishment without adding too much to my plate. And that’s exactly the line of thinking behind our latest Weekend Cleaning Challenge. My challenge for you this weekend is to run a load of laundry specifically for bathroom items, like your bath mat, shower curtain, and even your shower curtain liner. (When I wash liners, I like to toss my bath mat into the same load to help scrub the liner and cushion it so it doesn't get damaged.) Once everything is clean and dry, replace it all in your bathroom and congratulate yourself on a job well done. I bet you’ll be surprised at how far a simple load of laundry can go toward making your bathroom feel clean and refreshed. SAVE MONEY 3 Fun And Easy Ways To Save Money [An image of a laptop screen displaying a Google search for ]( These tips prove that saving money isn’t all about complex spreadsheets and drudgery. 1. Attend Free Events. Pull up Google and type in "free events in [your city]." I found a used book sale, a film screening, and a mural painting event all in the next couple weeks, and all of which are free to attend. It’s free entertainment, plus it's a great way to connect with and support your community. 2. Host A Clothing Swap. If you could use a wardrobe refresher, invite your friends or family over for a clothing swap party. Each person should bring a couple of items they’re willing to part with, then everyone can trade, haggle, and swap to their heart’s desire. It’s a fun change of pace and a great way to save. 3. Have A “Canceling” Session. A lot of people pay for services and subscriptions for too long because they never find the time to cancel them. So why not choose an evening to have a “canceling” session? You can finally call and cancel everything you haven’t been using, like gym memberships, magazine subscriptions, etc. JILLEE'S PICK The Wool Slippers I Can’t Live Without [A photo of wool slippers from Glerups.]( I have battled issues with my feet since I was 16 years old, but in lieu of a very long story, just know that when it comes to footwear, comfort is one of my highest priorities. This applies to around-the-house footwear too, since I work at home and spend the majority of my time there. While I definitely don't regret replacing our carpet and linoleum with tile and wood floors, the tile and wood turned out to be too hard on my feet. Since I can no longer go barefoot, I've taken to wearing slippers around the house. After trying out many different styles and materials in my search for the "perfect slippers," I finally found an option I love: 100% felted wool slippers with a tanned leather sole. There are plenty of brands that make wool slippers, but my favorites are from [Woolfit]( while Dave prefers [Glerups](. Wool slippers have so many advantages—they’re soft, breathable, warm, naturally odor resistant, and conform to the shape of your feet. They aren’t the cheapest option, but to me, they’ve been worth every penny. [Check out Glerups on Backcountry ➜]( QUIZ CORNER Which Shouldn’t You Plant? Of these vegetable garden staples, which is NOT a good candidate for fall planting? If you can't handle the cold, stay out of the autumnal growing season. (Scroll down to see the correct answer.) A. Carrots B. Onions C. Broccoli D. Beans A FEW MORE THINGS... Lather Up: It’s [Global Handwashing Day]( which seeks to encourage the practice of handwashing with soap and raise awareness that over 2 billion people still lack access to a basic handwashing facility. This cause is especially relevant in light of the critical role of hand hygiene in slowing the spread of COVID-19. More Notable Observances: There are several other observances that fall on October 15th worth noting, including the UN’s [International Day of Rural Women]( [Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day]( [White Cane Awareness Day]( and [National Latino AIDS Awareness Day](. On the other hand, carrots, onions, and broccoli are much hardier, and all of them can be planted in late summer and grown throughout the fall. Onions won't grow fast enough to harvest this year, but you can plant them now and “over-winter” them—it'll give them a head start on growth once the ground thaws in the spring.
