A brilliant tip for removing a stubborn splinter, 3 reasons to switch your pillowcase to silk, and more. October 14, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! Itâs been a rainy week here in our valley, but many of the surrounding mountains are now capped with snow. It feels like winter weather is right around the corner, so today I wanted to share one of my most useful DIYs for fighting winter dryness. Learn how to make my favorite simple salt scrub in Todayâs Good Thing. Also in todayâs newsletter, find out how the common thread between deepening wrinkles and bad hair days could be your pillowcase. (Realizing the thing that cradles your head is now the thing breaking your heart? Thatâs what hurts the most.) Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Need A Quick Fix For Dry Skin? Make This Scrub [A photo of a homemade body scrub.]( With winter on the way, itâs an ideal time to learn how to make this exfoliating and moisturizing body scrub. While sugar is usually the exfoliant of choice for homemade scrubs, I find that it can be a bit too gentle for the kind of dry, rough skin conditions that abound in winter. But Epsom salt has larger crystals that can provide more thorough exfoliation, and itâs just as affordable and widely available. Combine Epsom salt with coconut oil for its skin-nourishing fatty acids and lavender oil for its anti-inflammatory properties, and you get a homemade body scrub thatâs both exfoliating and highly moisturizing. No matter how rough or dry my skin feels to begin with, this scrub always leaves it feeling soft and moisturized. Hereâs how to make it: Add 2 cups of coconut oil, 1 cup of Epsom salt, and 20 drops of [lavender essential oil]( to a small bowl, then stir with a spoon until well combined. Transfer the finished body scrub to an airtight container until ready to use. Keep in mind that the coconut oil in this scrub can make your tub or shower fairly slippery, so just be sure to rinse the floor of your tub or shower really well so that no one slips and hurts themselves! Remove Splinters With A Potato [A photo of a small piece of potato and a bandaid.]( Find out how a potato comes in handy for stubborn splinters you canât quite reach with your tweezers. Donât you hate it when a splinter is buried just deeply enough in your skin that you canât get to it with tweezers? Luckily, thereâs an easy way to help draw that splinter to the surface, and all you need to do it is a small piece of potato. Cut a small piece of raw potato and place it on your skin where the splinter is. Secure it in place with a bandage, tape, or wrap of some sort and leave it there overnight. In the morning, the splinter will be much closer to the surface of your skin and thus much easier to remove. Itâs uncertain how exactly this method works, whether the potato draws moisture from the skin and exposes more of the splinter, or whether the vitamin C in the potato has an anti-inflammatory effect, or if it's something else entirely. Regardless of how it works, I'm just glad it does. SWAP THAT ð FOR THIS 3 Reasons To Replace Your Pillowcase With A Silk One [Photos of Jillee with a pillow in a silk pillowcase.]( These are just a few of the compelling reasons to consider ditching your current pillowcase for a silk one. 1. Better For Wrinkle Prevention. Silk pillowcases put up less resistance against skin, which means your skin is less likely to be bunched up and wrinkled while you sleep. No one can completely prevent wrinkles, but at least you'll be able to rest easy knowing your pillowcase isnât making matters worse when you're sleeping.
2. Keeps Hair Moisturized. Did you know that some fabrics are so dry they can actually draw moisture out of your hair while you sleep? On top of that, the friction from moving your head around can cause tangles, static buildup, and split ends too. But a silk pillowcase wonât dry out your hair or cause friction-related issues.
3. Helps Preserve Curls. I canât personally speak to the struggle of keeping curly hair curly overnight, but our curly-haired production manager Brittany tells me that switching to a silk pillowcase made a big difference for her. She says it helps preserve her curl pattern overnight so she doesnât wake up to flattened, lifeless curls. Maybe you have an entire inspiration board of elaborate birthday party ideas for your kids, but the real party happens at the bowling alley. (Iâve thrown many bowling alley birthdays for my own kids, so no judgment here.) I experience a similar phenomenon when I see posts from The Home Edit ([@thehomeedit]( in my Instagram feed. The cleanliness, the organization, the items arranged by color in order of ROYGBIVâitâs all very pleasing to look at. But the idea of replicating it in my own home isn't exactly realistic. In reality, the type of organization they showcase in their photos takes an incredible amount of time and effort. And The Home Edit is, at least in part, an organizing and styling service, meaning people get paid for the time and effort they put into those beautiful spaces. So until someone offers to pay me to make my house hyper-organizedâor better yet, pays The Home Edit to do it for meâthat level of organization remains aspirational. (And if that makes my home a metaphorical bowling alley birthday party, that suggests itâs low maintenance and everyone has a good time anyway.) YOUR ONE GOOD THING Freeze Chopped Green Onions Maria R. from Manhattan Beach, California has a great tip about green onions: "My tip is to freeze chopped scallions/green onions. My mom started doing this recently and it totally works. Then you always have some on hand to add to recipes and it reduces food waste." Thanks for sharing with us, Maria. Iâm always looking for new ways to reduce food waste, and it's even better when it also has the benefit of saving me time or effort in the kitchen. Chopping an entire bunch of green onions at once and freezing what you donât need right away checks every one of those boxes. Have a great tip or trick of your own? Treat Yourself: Apparently itâs National Dessert Day, and while I normally like to look into the origins and significance of âholidaysâ like these, Iâm choosing not to look this gift horse in the mouth. Thereâs really only one question we all need to answer: which dessert(s) will we eat to celebrate? On This Day: In 1892, [The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes]( a collection of short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, was published in book form. The stories were originally published individually in [The Strand Magazine]( between July 1891 and June 1892. What did you think of today's email?
