Whether youâre trying to lose weight or just avoid gaining it, donât underestimate the power of portion control. A lot of people struggle with the idea of eating smaller portions, but it doesnât have to be difficult. In fact, the 5 tips in Todayâs Good Thing can make it feel pretty easy. Also in todayâs newsletter, the latest Tech Tip Tuesday will help you make sense of a mysterious smartphone feature, and pick up 3 simple cooking tips that will enhance the flavor of everything you cook. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 5 Tips That Make Portion Control Easier [Photos of various portion control tips.]( These 5 simple tips can help you eat healthier portion sizes without making you feel deprived. 1. Use Smaller Plates. The size of your plates, bowls, and even cutlery can influence how much you eat at a given meal. Large plates can make portions appear smaller than they are and contribute to overeating. Try making the switch to smaller dishes, and youâll likely feel just as full after a meal despite eating less.
2. Split Large Entrees. When you eat out at restaurants that serve large portions, split an entree with your dining companion. Or ask to have half of it boxed up, then you can take it home and have a whole additional meal later on.
3. Pig Out On Veggies. If you find yourself feeling âsnackyâ rather than hungry, steer yourself towards salads, broccoli, or any other low-calorie, nutritious vegetable. It may not be quite as satisfying as indulging in mass amounts of junk food, but choosing veggies will at least minimize the impact of overeating.
4. Slow Down At Mealtimes. It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to get the signal from your stomach that it has gotten its fill of food. Eating slowly at mealtimes is an easy way to avoid eating too much before your stomach has a chance to let your brain know itâs time to stop eating.
5. Measure It Out. If youâre not a very accurate âeyeballâ measurer, try measuring out the recommended serving size of the foods and drinks you consume for a few days. By seeing the correct amount and getting a feel for the weight and size of it, youâll learn how to measure more accurately without the aid of measuring cups. [Photos indicating the green and orange dots that appear at the top of iPhone screens.]( Get the lowdown on the orange and green dots that show up near the top of your iPhone screen. If you have an iPhone and have noticed a green or orange dot at the top of your screen, you may have also noticed that they only appear at certain times or when youâre using certain apps. Thatâs because the dots indicate when your phoneâs camera or microphone is active, giving you more control over which apps can use them. Green Dot: When a green dot appears at the top of your screen, that means your camera is active and being used by one or more apps. Youâll notice it pop up when youâre using the Camera app or making a FaceTime call. Orange Dot: When an orange dot appears, that means that your phoneâs microphone is actively being used. Youâll see the orange dot show up when youâre talking on the phone, when Siri is activated, and when youâre recording Voice Memos. These indicators were introduced with iOS 14 to help increase users' control over their camera and microphone. If you no longer want a particular app to have access to your camera or microphone, go to Settings > Privacy, then tap Microphone or Camera. Locate the app in the list, then set the toggle to âoffâ to revoke its access. COOKING 3 Simple Cooking Tips That Everything Taste Better [Various photos of cooking.]( Used by restaurant chefs around the world, these simple tips can do wonders for your own cooking too. 1. Season At Every Step. From the very beginning to the finishing touches, you should season your food at every stage of the cooking process. âEvery stageâ may sound like overkill, but adding salt and other seasonings at multiple stages develops deep, satisfying flavors that you canât achieve any other way.
2. Add A Splash Of Acid. Acidic ingredients are a crucial component in cooking. Their tart and tangy flavor can help brighten up dishes that would otherwise be too rich or savory. When a dish is âmissing something,â a splash of lemon juice, white wine vinegar, or another acid will rarely lead you astray.
3. Finish With Dairy. Several of the best pasta dishes Iâve ever made specify to add cheese or cream right at the end of the cooking process. Adding dairy at the end helps to prevent it from curdling and preserve its natural sweetness. (This applies to all kinds of cooking methods, from stovetop to slow cooker.) JILLEE'S PICK The Secrets Of The Secret Garden [An image of the front cover of ]( [The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett]( has been one of my very favorite books for as long as I can remember. It's one of those books I return to again and again, both for the comforting familiarity of it and for the important lessons I occasionally need reminding of. When I was a girl, I was captivated by the idea of that walled garden, private and hidden away, just waiting to be discovered. The garden is a hidden source of magic, and has a transformative power that plays a major role throughout the book. Reading this at a young age helped give me an appreciation for nature, and especially gardensâit's no coincidence that I spend so much time and effort surrounding my house with flowers and plants! Ultimately, The Secret Garden is a lesson on the necessity of our relationshipsâboth with other people and with nature itself. This beautiful story illustrates how friendship, sunshine, and fresh air are integral to our well being, and reminds us that we shouldn't take any of them for granted. Marketed as a âhousehold robot,â Astro is what you would get if you combined Alexa with a robot vacuum and a home security system. Astro wanders your home freely much like a robot vacuum, but instead of cleaning your floors, it performs simple tasks, carries messages, and more. It even has a periscope-style camera you can use to monitor a pot on your stovetop while youâre taking care of something in another room. Astro is also equipped with Alexa, so it can set timers, control smart home devices, or even follow you around the house while youâre listening to a playlist or podcast. What a time to be alive, huh? Unfortunately, Astro is only available by invitation, and it doesnât exactly come cheap either. The introductory price is $1,000, but once that expires, it will go up to $1,450(!!!)
