An effortless way to keep your shower cleaner, a tip that will save you time at self-checkout, and more. September 27, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! There are a number of factors you could consider when deciding whether to hang something in your closet or fold it instead, but the most important factor is what’s best for that piece of clothing in the long run. In Today’s Good Thing, find out which 7 items will last longer if you hang them in your closet. Also in today’s newsletter, I have a great tip to share for those of you with glass surfaces in your shower, whether it's the door or the entire enclosure. In less than a minute of work, you can help keep the glass in your shower clean for weeks. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 7 Clothing Items You Should Always Hang Up [A photo of Jillee looking at clothes hanging on a rack.]( Wondering which clothes you should hang and which you should fold? Here are 7 you should hang. 1. Dresses. Hang lightweight dresses using the straps that are sewn into the back or sides, and if they’re extra-slippery, criss-cross the straps over the top of the hanger to secure it. Heavy dresses and dresses with delicate fabrics should be hung on padded hangers. 2. Light Sweaters And Cardigans. Hang sweaters and cardigans in your closet. To help prevent gravity from stretching out the sleeves, I suggest putting them on hangers using [this hang-fold method]( instead of doing it the usual way. 3. Blouses. Hang collared blouses with the top button fastened to preserve the shape of the collar, especially if they’re made of silk, satin, or lace. For collarless blouses, avoid stretching the neckline by inserting the hanger through the bottom instead of the top. 4. Trousers And Dress Pants. Hang trousers, dress pants, and slacks from skirt hangers. It’s a great way to both save space in your closet and avoid that annoying crease that can form when you fold them over hangers. 5. Jackets, Blazers, And Coats. Hang outerwear like jackets, blazers, and sport coats in your closet. They’ll do fine on plastic hangers, but curved suit hangers are best. If your closet gets dusty, use shoulder covers to protect your nicest jackets. 6. Skirts. Hang skirts from skirt hangers, or from hanging straps if your skirt has them. You can also make your own skirt hangers using plastic hangers and a few clothespins or clips. [Get the details here](. 7. Scarves. Hanging scarves is the best way to keep them in good condition. If closet space isn’t an issue, hang them over a regular plastic hanger, but if you need a space-saving solution, try a dedicated scarf hanger with holes for multiple scarves. I love the glass shower enclosure we put in when we remodeled our master bathroom a couple of years ago (the whole bathroom feels brighter for it), but it can be a bit challenging to keep clean. It's mainly due to the hardness of our water, because it leaves water spots and mineral deposits on everything. One thing that I've discovered helps keep my shower enclosure cleaner is treating the inside of the glass with a water repellent like Rain-X. (Rain-X actually makes a product specifically for shower doors, but I'm sure the original variety—or any other water repelling treatment—would work just as well.) Make sure your shower enclosure or shower door is nice and clean, then apply a water repellent spray according to the directions on the bottle. You’ll be shocked by how much longer your glass shower surfaces stay clean after doing this one easy step. SHOPPING Save Time At Self-Checkout With PLU Codes [A photo of the PLU code on a sticker on a bunch of bananas.]( Browsing the entire produce menu at self-checkout is slow, so try using PLU codes instead. The most time-consuming part of using self-checkout at the grocery store is ringing up produce items, because most of them don’t have scannable barcodes. To ring up produce items at most self-checkout stands, you have to either look up the item by name, photo, or by entering its price lookup (PLU) code. Entering a 4- or 5-digit PLU code can save you a surprising amount of time over looking through a bunch of different options (and potentially choosing the wrong one!) The PLU code for produce can usually be found on the produce sticker, label, or wrapping, so it's not hard to find. Experienced cashiers have hundreds of PLU codes memorized, which is why they're so fast at ringing up your produce. Try ringing your own produce up with the PLU codes the next time you go through self-checkout and see if it makes the process faster or easier (I'd bet on both!) JILLEE'S PICK True Crime From My Own Backyard [A promotional image for Season One of the Cold podcast.]( If you enjoy the true crime genre and haven’t heard about the [Cold podcast]( it’s high time you did. While I’d heard of it before (more on that shortly), it wasn’t until my daughter-in-law Kaitlyn recommended it to me that I decided to give it a try. She’s very into true crime, so I knew that if she thought it was good enough to recommend, I should probably give it a chance! The reason I’d already heard of Cold is because it’s produced by KSLPodcasts. (KSL is one of the top news channels here in Utah.) The entire first season of Cold is centered around a well known case around here: the unsolved disappearance of Susan Powell. After the case was declared cold in 2013, the police released tens of thousands of pages of police reports, evidence, case files, and other materials related to the case. In 2016, KSL launched a review of all of the Susan Powell records, and their investigation serves as the basis for Season One of Cold. I’m still only a few episodes in, but I’m already riveted by it and can’t wait to listen to the rest. And if you end up enjoying Season One, you can dive right into Season Two that was released earlier this year. [See the Cold podcast on Amazon Music](. MONDAY MOTIVATION Mondays Are For New Beginnings I don’t know about you, but I certainly don't do my best work when I’m preoccupied by mistakes I’ve made or ways that I’ve fallen short. While there are always things you can learn from the past in order to improve in the future, there’s a difference between learning from the past and ruminating on it. This often comes up for me on Mondays, because that’s when my team and I have our weekly virtual meeting to review what we did the previous week and check in on our goals. If we didn't meet a goal or I personally dropped the ball in some way, it's easy to fixate on that and carry those negative feelings throughout the week. But when I allow that to happen, I lose sight of the fact that there's a much easier way to turn things around. Instead of obsessing, I could accept that things didn't go the way I wanted them to, and then shift my focus to what's ahead. I can’t change the past, and wasting my time and energy on it doesn’t do me (or anyone else) any good. So today, I encourage you to leave any failures, disappointments, or shortcomings you experienced last week where they belong: in the past. Instead, focus on what’s ahead of you, and trust that you can learn from your mistakes without continuing to punish yourself for them. A FEW MORE THINGS...
