A quick fix for zippers that wonât stay zipped, why facial waxing isnât for everyone, and more. September 9, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! Of the many ways you could upcycle an old t-shirt, turning it into a headscarfâwhich is the subject of Todayâs Good Thingâhas to be among the most useful. I've got a few ways to use t-shirt headscarfs to share here, but trust that if you make it, the inspiration will come. (It's a classic Field of Dreams scenario.) And if youâve ever known the deep frustration of wearing pants whose zipper is determined to fall down at every turn, youâre in luck. Todayâs Why Didnât I Think Of That is about a quick fix for that troublesome zipper thatâs simple yet brilliant, much like zippers themselves when theyâre functioning correctly. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING The Most Useful Thing You Can Do With An Old T-Shirt [Photos of OGT Production Manager Brittany putting on a t-shirt headscarf.]( Making a headscarf out of an old t-shirt couldnât be easier, and theyâre surprisingly useful too. For as many reasons there are for a person to wrap their hair up or cover their head, there are as many different types of head coverings they can use to do it. But here I want to focus on one form of headscarf in particular, which is one you can make yourself out of a soft t-shirt. To turn a t-shirt into a headscarfâand pay attention here, because itâs highly complex stuffâuse a pair of scissors to cut a straight line from armpit to armpit. The bottom half is your headscarf, and you can set aside the top half to use for another project. Here are just a few of the ways you can put your t-shirt headscarf to good use: 1. To Cover Your Head. This idea originally came to me by way of a reader named Elise, who used her t-shirt headscarf to cover her head while undergoing chemotherapy. Many chemo patients find that t-shirts make for softer, less irritating headscarves than other types of materials.
2. To Keep Your Hair Dry. I like to use one of these t-shirt headscarves to keep my hair dry in the shower when I donât want to get my hair wet. Regular shower caps always make my head sweaty, so I much prefer the breathable t-shirt material (even if it is less waterproof).
3. To Dry Curly Hair. For those with curly hair, wrapping it up in a t-shirt after showering can help absorb excess water without removing as much moisture as a traditional towel. Fans of this method say their curls are softer, smoother, and less frizzy once it dries. When it comes to actually putting one of these headscarves on your head, there are two different options worth learning. Use A Keyring To Keep Your Zipper Up [A photo of a keyring holding up a zipper.]( If the zipper on your favorite pants wonât stay up, this clever hack can make them wearable again. A zipper that wonât stay up can be a real nuisance. Instead of relying on friends or loved ones to alert you to the status of your zipper with an "XYZ" ("Examine your zipper!"), there's a quick fix you can use to prevent it from sliding downâat least until you intend for it to do so. Grab a small keyringâany metal keyring will doâand thread it into the hole the end of your zipper. Then put the pants on, zip them up, and hook the keyring over the button of your pants. The button isn't going anywhere, which means the zipper will stay closed until you unhook the keyring from the button. How easy is that? SWAP THAT ð FOR THIS Waxing Unwanted Facial Hair Isnât For Everyone [Photos of facial waxing and shaving.]( There are plenty of reasons to stop waxing unwanted facial hair and start shaving instead. There are plenty of ways to remove unwanted hair from your face, and waxing is one of the most popular options. While the results do last a bit longer since the hair is being removed from the root, there are downsides to waxing that are worth taking into consideration. For me, the biggest disadvantage of facial waxing is that it hurts. I have sensitive skin that prefers to be treated gently, and there's nothing at all gentle about getting hair and wax ripped off of your face. But even if that part doesnât phase you, there can be pain after the fact if your skin gets injured or infected. There are also plenty of people who shouldnât have their faces waxed. This includes people who have had recent skin procedures, are taking acne medications or antibiotics, or use topical retinol products. And for those who either canât get waxed or donât want to, shaving makes an easy, affordable, and low-risk alternative. (Regrettable, but fair.) But once I finally found a workout I donât actually hate doingâlow-impact [resistance training]( only hurdle left was to find a sports bra I didnât hate wearing. But Iâm happy to report I did find a bra that fulfilled that requirement: the [Brandi Sport Underwire Bra]( from Wacoal. It manages to offer both maximum support and maximum comfort, and the soft fabric helps keep me feeling cool and dry while Iâm exercising. Unlike most sports bras, this one has adjustable straps that you can wear as-is or reconfigure to work with different styles of athletic tops. And last but not least, my favorite feature: it clasps in the back. That means no wrestling to get it on and off over my head, which I very much appreciate. The best praise I can give this bra is that it makes exercise less of a chore. I no longer dread putting on and wearing a problematic sports bra while I exercise, because this style is the perfect solution. [See the Brandi Sport Underwire Bra on Wacoal here](. YOUR ONE GOOD THING A Correction Regarding Honey After writing in a recent newsletter about reviving crystallized honey in your dishwasher, I received a number of replies from readers who were worried this method might negatively affect the honey. So I did some research, and it turned out they were right, particularly where raw honey is concerned. Heating raw honey too much can destroy its pollen, antioxidants, and enzymes, and if it gets really hot, the sugars can caramelize and turn the honey into something else entirely. And since crystals in honey are only a cosmetic concern anyway, I now realize that the dishwasher method was overkill. Itâs a bit like using a flamethrower to start a campfireâyes it'll work, but it probably shouldnât be the first thing you try. So now that I have my facts straight, Iâm taking a mulligan and sharing a new, gentler way to re-liquify crystallized honey: Scoop the amount of honey you need into a glass container with a lid. Set the container into a larger bowl, then pour warm water (about 100°F, so a bit less hot than the hottest water from your tap) around the container until the water level is above the honey but below the lid. Then just wait until the warm water melts the crystals. (P.S. Thank you to all the readers who wrote in! Iâm grateful to be part of a community that learns from each other and grows together.)
