The best reasons to wear your socks to bed, a clever hack that keeps leftover cake moist, and more.

The best reasons to wear your socks to bed, a clever hack that keeps leftover cake moist, and more. September 5, 2021 [View Online]( TOGETHER WITH [1440]( Good morning! While that musty storage smell is often attached to clothes that have been boxed up in the attic for a decade, it can cling to clothes in your closet and drawers just as easily. But it’s nothing a few simple scented sachets can’t solve, and you’ll learn how to make them in Today’s Good Thing. Also in today’s newsletter, Jillee's Pick features another selection of my favorite romantic comedies. This time I’m focusing on my faves from the ‘80s, which are replete with powerful career women, recklessly voluminous hairstyles, and the occasional mermaid. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING The Easy DIY Antidote To That Musty Closet Smell [Photos of scented sachets in various locations.]( Learn how to make your own naturally-scented sachets that will keep your clothes fresh while in storage. When fabric items sit untouched in a closet, dresser, or storage tote for a long time, they can take on a musty smell that may require several washes to get rid of entirely. But just by storing a few scented sachets with your clothes, you can prevent that musty smell from becoming a problem in the first place. Making your own sachets is a no-brainer, in my opinion, because it gives you complete control over both the scent itself and how strong the scent is. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that they’re so quick, easy, and affordable to make either. Here’s how to make your own sachets: Grab four cotton balls and add 1-2 drops of the essential oil of your choice to each one. (I usually reach for [lavender oil]( when making sachets because it’s a classic choice for freshening fabrics, but you can use any oil or oil blend you like.) Tuck the cotton balls into a small organza drawstring bag and cinch it closed, then repeat the process to make as many sachets as desired. Put the sachets in your dresser drawers, closets, or coat pockets to prevent your clothes from taking on that musty storage smell. [Read more ➜]( SLEEP WELL SUNDAY 3 Compelling Reasons To Wear Socks To Bed [Photos of Jillee wearing socks in bed.]( No matter where you stand on the subject of wearing socks to bed, it certainly has its benefits. 1. Fall Asleep Faster. Warming up your feet before bed can send a signal to your brain that it’s time to wind down and go to sleep, and wearing socks is an easy way to do that. Dutch researchers observed that participants who wore regular or heated socks fell asleep faster during a [2007 sleep study]( published in Physiology & Behavior. 2. Prevent Hot Flashes. Wearing socks can aid the process of vasodilation, or the widening of your blood vessels, and improve blood flow around your body. Good blood flow helps your body maintain a consistent temperature while you sleep, which can mean fewer temperature-related sleep interruptions like hot flashes and cold sweats. 3. Improve Cracked Heels. If you're plagued by painfully dry heels and feet, apply the thickest, richest moisturizing lotion you own to your feet and pull on a pair of cotton socks before getting in bed. The socks will help prevent the lotion from rubbing off or drying out, and in the morning you’ll wake up to softer, smoother feet. Use Bread To Keep Leftover Cake Moist [A photo of a cake being kept fresh with slices of bread.]( With this simple tip, that leftover birthday cake will still be plenty moist when you snag a slice for breakfast. Since cake doesn't typically keep for very long, I have relatively few rules when it comes to eating leftover cake. I’ll happily have some for breakfast, and then have it again later in day for dessert. Unless, however, the leftover cake has gotten stale, in which case that's a completely different (and much more disappointing) story. Luckily, there's an easy way to prevent the cut edges of your cake from drying out when you're wrapping up the leftovers. Just grab a few toothpicks and a couple of pieces of bread, and use the toothpicks to secure the bread slices to the cut edges of the cake. The bread will get stale over time, but the cake behind it will stay moist and delicious. JILLEE'S PICK My Favorite Romantic Comedies Of The ‘80s [Images from ]( As a lifelong fan of romantic comedies, I thought it was time I shared some of my favorites with you. But the list I made was so long that I had to break it up into pieces, and after sharing the first piece in the [July 31 newsletter]( I’m excited to share the second piece today! Since I focused on the late ‘70s last time, here are some of my favorite romantic comedies from the 1980s: • 1984’s [Splash]( starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah. It has mermaid lore, Tom Hanks before he was famous, the joke that turned “Madison” into a popular first name for girls—what more could you want from such a weird and surprisingly sweet movie? • 1987’s [Baby Boom]( starring Diane Keaton and Sam Shepard. This movie features a number of classic rom-com tropes: a Manhattan career woman, an unexpected inheritance, moving to the country, falling for a veterinarian —the Hallmark Channel was clearly taking notes. • 1988’s [Working Girl]( starring Harrison Ford and Melanie Griffith. Melanie Griffith is smart and charming as up-and-comer Tess, and Harrison Ford is, well, Harrison Ford in the ‘80s, so it's smart to keep a hand fan on standby during this one. • 1989’s [When Harry Met Sally...]( starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal. Having set a new standard for romantic comedies after its release, this movie is just as warm and witty today as it ever was. The caliber of banter is unmatched and helps make this movie both endlessly quotable and rewatchable. I'll share more of my favorites in future newsletters. Are there any other rom-coms you loved from this era? Hit reply and let me know! ASK JILLEE Removing Sweat Stains From Bras [Photos of the process for removing sweat stains.]( Susan from Mishawaka, Indiana asked: "How can I make sweat-stained bras white again?" My answer: Whether they're in the armpit area of your shirts or on your bras, sweat stains can be tricky to remove. Not only does the sweat from your underarms contain a higher amount of fats and proteins that contribute to staining, but the sweat can mix with the ingredients in your antiperspirant and become even more difficult to remove. Luckily, I've tried just about everything under the sun in my own attempts to remove sweat stains from my family’s clothing. A mixture of dish soap and hydrogen peroxide has proven time and again to be one of the most effective options for removing sweat stains, which you can learn about in more detail in [this blog post](. While I had stained t-shirts in mind when I came up with this method, it should work just as effectively on stained bras. Just be gentle when scrubbing and use a soft brush, and make sure to rinse the bra thoroughly afterward to get all the soap out of the padding. Have a question you want to ask me? [Submit your question here]( for a chance to see it answered in a future newsletter! A FEW MORE THINGS... It’s the [International Day of Charity]( designated by the United Nations General Assembly to mobilize people around the world to help others through volunteer work and philanthropy.
