Make a natural produce wash with lemon oil, tips for snagging the best deals at Target, and more. August 30, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! We all use our freezers to keep our food fresh over a long period of time, but there’s plenty of ways to use it that don't involve food at all. I’m sharing 5 of the most useful—and perhaps most unexpected—ways to put your freezer to good use in Today’s Good Thing. Can you believe that next Monday is Labor Day? It turns out that starting a new daily newsletter in June will really make the summer fly by, but honestly I’ve been having a blast. It feels like we’re neighbors and I’ve been dropping by to swap tips and shoot the breeze. Same time tomorrow? Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 5 Useful Things You Didn’t Know Your Freezer Can Do [Photos of pants, shoes, and a wooden crate inside a freezer.]( There are plenty of useful things your freezer can do that have nothing to do with food. 1. Open A Sealed Envelope. If you sealed a letter or card only to realize you left out something crucial, you can use your freezer to open it. Place the sealed envelope in a ziplock bag, freeze it for an hour or so, then open the envelope immediately with a blunt knife or letter opener. Once it returns to room temperature, remoisten the adhesive to reseal it. 2. Make Candles Last Longer. Place new candles in your freezer for a day before lighting them. The chilled wax will burn slower so the candle lasts longer, and with some candles, it can even prevent the wax from dripping when you burn them. 3. Refresh Your Jeans. If the threat of fading or shrinking has you nervous about washing your new jeans, roll them up and stick them in a canvas bag, then place the bag in your freezer overnight. The frigid temperatures will kill odor-causing bacteria and freshen your jeans without affecting their color. 4. Freshen Smelly Shoes. The method outlined above works just as well for freshening smelly shoes. Just seal a pair of smelly shoes into a ziplock bag and stick the bag in your freezer overnight to kill odor-causing bacteria. 5. Kill Bugs. Wooden antiques can sometimes harbor woodworm and other insects that can cause damage to the wood. If you bring home a wooden item from a yard sale and you’re not sure if it’s free of pests, stick it in your freezer for a couple of weeks to kill any critters that may be living inside. As a bit of a lemon fanatic (just ask my [lemon-themed Pinterest board]( it shouldn't surprise you to hear that lemon is one of my very favorite essential oils. But it's not because of how good it smells—well, it’s not just because of that. It’s one of my favorites because of its powerful cleaning and purifying properties, which I take advantage of by using it to wash fresh produce. To try it yourself, just add 2-3 drops of [lemon essential oil]( to a sink full of cold water, swish your fruits or veggies around in the water to remove dirt and kill germs, then pat your produce dry and drain the water. How quick and easy is that? You might find you prefer it to washing your produce with hydrogen peroxide or a vinegar rinse. While those methods get the job done too, they don't smell nearly as nice! SHOPPING 3 Ways To Make The Most Of Any Target Run [Photos of Jillee shopping at Target.]( With these tips helping you score great deals at Target, you can enjoy your retail therapy guilt-free. 1. Check The End Caps. When you’re [hunting for deals at Target]( don’t forget to check the end caps at the ends of the aisles. The shelves that face toward walkways are usually stocked with new, featured, and sale-priced items, while the ones that face out toward the walls often carry clearance items. 2. Shop After Holidays. It's hard to beat Target when it comes to post-holiday clearance sales. You’ll find the best selection of holiday items like food, decor, gift wrap, and clothing the day after a holiday, but the deepest discounts won’t arrive until a week later. 3. Get Free Gift Cards. Keep an eye out for special offers that include free Target gift cards. You usually earn these cards by spending a certain amount on items in a specific category (like women’s clothing, personal care, etc.) Check out Target's [Top Deals page]( to see current promotions with free gift cards. JILLEE'S PICK The Verdict On Mayoneggs [Photos of mayoneggs. ]( I love a good plate of scrambled eggs, and Google knows it. If you don’t use Google Chrome on your phone, there's a “Discover” section where you can browse suggested articles based on your interests and browser activity. And there always seems to be at least one in mine about scrambled eggs. One I was intrigued by recently was [this article from The Kitchn]( about a recipe for “mayoneggs” found in a 1972 Best Foods magazine ad. The word “recipe” is kind of a stretch in my opinion, due to the simplicity of the instructions: add a tablespoon of mayo to two eggs, whisk it all together, and cook/scramble as usual. I was game to give it a try one morning, and if you can believe it, I liked them so much I made them again the following morning. But I can’t say I’m surprised—mayo is largely made of eggs and oil, and oil contains fat, and adding fat to eggs makes them delicious. Try “mayoneggs” for yourself and let me know how you like ‘em! MONDAY MOTIVATION Find Hope And Support On Instagram Depending on who you follow on Instagram, scrolling through your feed can leave you feeling envious, self-conscious, or even depressed. But you can counter that negativity by turning your Instagram feed into a wellspring of encouragement and support, and it’s as easy as following professionals who specialize in both. Many qualified therapists are active on Instagram these days, and seeing their posts in your feed can be a source of comfort and support on difficult days. While following therapists on Instagram should not be considered a substitute for therapy, it can create regular opportunities for you to check in on your mental health. Here are just a few of the many therapists, counselors, and mental health professionals sharing their expertise on Instagram: 1. Allyson Dinneen, M.Ed. [@notesfromyourtherapist](. Her handwritten insights about closeness and connection feel like they’re written just for you. 2. Nedra Glover Tawwab, LCSW. [@nedratawwab](. She gives expert advice about creating and maintaining healthy relational boundaries. 3. Whitney Goodman, LMFT. [@sitwithwhit](. Her mental health insights are delivered with honesty and in a way that feels approachable. A FEW MORE THINGS... What's Coming Up? It’s National Toasted Marshmallow Day, and I can’t think of a better reason to roast a few ‘mallows out by our fire pit this evening. While you can [do it inside]( you just can’t beat the peaceful ambiance of the great outdoors (at least until someone’s slow-roasted marshmallow ignites or drops into the fire.) LOVE OGT? SHARE IT!
