How to control the chaos under your kitchen sink, a simple way to save $100, and more. August 27, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! While it’s always good to take what you read online with a grain of salt, some things really do live up to the hype. Coconut oil is one of them, and the 6 uses featured in Today’s Good Thing highlight its versatility as a food item, cooking ingredient, and DIY staple—and that’s really just the tip of the iceberg. Also in today’s newsletter, challenges abound! For our Weekend Cleaning Challenge, join me in tackling the spacious and often chaotic area underneath the kitchen sink. You'll also learn about a simple money-saving challenge that’s perfect for those of us who live by our to-do lists. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 6 Surprising Uses For Coconut Oil You’ll Want To Try [Photos of uses for coconut oil.]( Coconut oil’s many beneficial properties make it highly versatile and surprisingly useful. 1. Homemade Vapor Rub. Using coconut oil and a few congestion-fighting essential oils, you can make your own homemade vapor rub to help open your airways when you’re dealing with chest congestion or a cough. [Get the recipe here.]( 2. Soothing After-Sun Lotion. You can also use coconut oil to make an after-sun lotion that’s packed with rich, nourishing ingredients. Not only will it help protect your skin during the healing process, but it will help soothe the pain too. [Get the recipe here](. 3. “Magic Shell” Ice Cream Topping. You can make your own crackly chocolate ice cream topping with just two ingredients: coconut oil and Nutella. Combine 2 parts coconut oil and 1 part Nutella, then pour it over ice cream and it will set into a crackable shell within a minute. 4. Lip Scrub. With just sugar, a bit of coconut oil, and a drop of peppermint oil, you can make a great natural lip scrub. Use it to exfoliate, soften, and hydrate your lips anytime, or use it just before applying lip color to remove dead skin so your lipstick will look super smooth. [Get the recipe here](. 5. Popcorn Cooking Oil. If you’re a fan of homemade popcorn, try cooking it in coconut oil. It adds another layer of flavor that’s different in a delicious way, and it makes a nice change of pace from other oils. You get all those good, healthy fats from the coconut oil in your popcorn too, which is a nice bonus. 6. “Buttered” Cinnamon Toast. No lie: buttered toast with cinnamon sugar is one of my all-time favorite foods. If you like cinnamon toast too, you have to try it using coconut oil in place of butter. Toast your bread, “butter” it with coconut oil while it’s still warm, then sprinkle liberally with cinnamon sugar. Mmmm... The cabinet under the kitchen sink can be both a blessing and a curse. They're a blessing because of their highly convenient location and their generous size, but all that space can be a curse if they’re plagued by clutter and disorganization. In my experience, keeping the area under your sink clean is one of those "never truly finished" tasks. But on the bright side, that makes it an excellent choice for a Weekend Cleaning Challenge, which is why we'll be tackling it this weekend! First, go through the contents of the cabinet. There are at least 7 things you shouldn’t keep under your kitchen sink due to humidity and other risk factors, [so check out the full list here]( and use it to decide what should stay and what should go elsewhere. Once you’ve done that, you can determine the best way to organize it. If you have a number of different spray cleaners under your sink, consider installing a tension rod and hanging the bottles from it. A few storage bins or shelves can come in handy for organizing your other supplies, like sponges, scrub brushes, etc. A small over-the-door shelf or hanging paper towel holder can be useful too. [See all of these tips in action and get more useful pointers here](. Happy cleaning! SAVE MONEY Put Saving Money On Your To-Do List [A photo of the 30-Day $100 Savings Challenge checklist from Apartment Therapy.]( This simple challenge makes saving money as easy as checking a task off your to-do list. If you love the feeling of checking things off a to-do list, why not use that knowledge to help yourself save money? A simple method developed by Rutgers professor Dr. Barbara O’Neill does just that, and involves saving $1-5 a day by putting it in a jar or transferring it to your savings account online. Once the task is done for the day, you just check it off [this checklist](. This challenge can help motivate you to be proactive and mindful about saving money, rather than habitually spending your cash on things you don't necessarily need (or sometimes even want!) You'll hardly miss the few dollars a day you're stashing away, but after just 30 days you'll have saved $100—certainly nothing to sneeze at! [You can download the printable checklist from Apartment Therapy here.]( JILLEE'S PICK Graphic Tees From Sub_Urban Riot [Photos of graphic tees from Sub_Urban Riot.]( I’ve been on quite the kick with graphic tees this summer, and many of the best ones I’ve added to my collection came from the same brand: Sub_Urban Riot. I came across this California brand at Nordstrom, but they have their own [online shop]( too. Here are a few of my favorite Sub_Urban Riot tees (so far, anyway): 1. [Kindness Is Free]( 2. [I Got This]( 3. [Work Hard And Be Nice]( 4. [Indoorsy]( Do you have a favorite brand or store you turn to for graphic tees? Hit “reply” and tell me about them! QUIZ CORNER How Much Did It Cost?
