A simple fix for problems with small wash loads, tips for protecting your skin from HEV light, and more. August 18, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! Rise and shine sleepyheadsâitâs time for breakfast! Well, itâs actually time to read todayâs newsletter, but it's full of breakfast-related ideas that will surely nourish you all the same. First up, fans of crispy bacon rejoice, because Todayâs Good Thing features not one, but two easy ways to make crispy bacon in a hurry. (Not a fan of crispy bacon? Let everyone know what kind of bacon is best in the Poll of the Week.) And for those of us who inevitably need to wash food spills out of our clothes after breakfast, todayâs Wash It Wednesday features a simple fix for problems with small wash loads that may come in handy. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 2 Easy Ways To Make Perfectly Crispy Bacon [Photo of a crispy piece of bacon.]( For perfectly crispy bacon in no time, either of these fast and foolproof cooking methods will get the job done. How to make crispy bacon with the microwave-only method: Line a microwave-safe plate with 4 sheets of paper towel. Place 2-5 strips of bacon (not the thick-cut kind) on the paper towels in a single layer, then cover the bacon with 2 more sheets of paper towel. Microwave the plate for 1 minute per slice of bacon on the plate. Pros: The paper towels absorb the grease for easy cleanup, less lingering bacon smell, and itâs a useful option for cooking bacon in smaller amounts. Cons: You use a lot of paper towels with this method, you canât collect the bacon grease to use for other things, and the bacon comes out quite crisp (which could be a good or bad thing, depending on your tastes). How to make crispy bacon with the hybrid method: Place a cooling rack onto a baking sheet, arrange strips of bacon on the rack, then place it under your broiler. Cook the bacon for about 5 minutes on one side, then flip it over and cook for another 3 minutes. Next, wrap the pieces in a paper towel and microwave for 1 minute to give it a nice, crispy finish. Pros: The bacon comes out crispy without being brittle, and youâll get to keep the bacon grease thatâs left in the baking sheet and use it however you like. Cons: Thereâs still a bit of waste involved (though one paper towel is certainly better than six), and thereâs a bit more cleanup required afterward. Related • [14 Easy Ways To Cook Perfect Bacon](

Try This Trick [Photo of adding old towels to a washing machine.]( If your high efficiency washing machine struggles with small loads, this simple trick can help. When I got my first HE washing machine a few years ago, I started experiencing one of two different problems whenever I tried to wash a small load. Either my clothes would come out feeling sudsy and under-rinsed, or everything would still be soaking wet because the washer hadnât completed the full spin cycle. If these issues sound familiar, you'll be glad to know that I found a fix that ended up solving both problems at once. And it couldn't be simpler eitherâthe key is "tricking" your washing machine with a few old towels. (Why old towels? Since they've already been through the wash dozens of times, they're a lot less likely to transfer color or shed lint than a newer towel.) When you add a few old towels to small loads, the additional weight tells your washer to dispense more water. More water means more effective rinsing, while the added bulk also helps balance the wash drum during the spin cycle, meaning no more wet clothes either. BEAUTY 3 Ways To Protect Your Skin From Aging HEV Light [Photos of tips for avoiding HEV light.]( Screens emit HEV light that can accelerate aging, but these three tips can help protect your skin. 1. Adjust Your Display Settings. Apple users can use the built-in Night Shift feature to shift their phone and computer displays to warmer colors. (Night Shift turns on at sunset and off at sunrise by default, but you can adjust this setting by going to Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift.) For Android users, go to Settings > Display and look for either the Night Light or Blue Light Filter options, which work the same way as Night Shift and can be adjusted to your liking.
2. Use Hands-Free Features. One way to avoid the direct contact of your phone screen against your face is to make hands-free calls. (Personally, I much prefer making calls through my AirPods rather than holding my phone up the whole time.) You can also use virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa to create calendar events, make notes, send texts, and more hands-free.
3. Wear SPF Every Day. Wearing sunscreen or another product with SPF is the easiest way to protect yourself against damage from any type of light. Whether youâll be out in the sun or in front of a screen, make a habit of applying some sort of SPF every day.
