The 3 red flags to watch for when you’re on the phone, a safer way to hammer a nail, and more. August 15, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! While “variety is the spice of life,” you don’t always have to reinvent the wheel. For instance, there are plenty of simple and effective beauty hacks that women have been using for decades that still work like a charm—learn 5 of these time-tested techniques in Today’s Good Thing. Today's newsletter also features a new segment I'm calling Scam Watch, which will offer useful information and tips that can help spot scams and avoid them. In today’s segment, learn about 3 red flags that can help you tell a legitimate phone call from an attempted con. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 5 Old School Beauty Hacks That Still Work Like A Charm [Photos of classic beauty hacks.]( These time-tested beauty hacks are still as useful today as they were back in the day. 1. Soften Eyeliner With A Lighter. That old lighter trick is still one of the easiest ways to soften up your eyeliner so that it glides on smoothly. Just pass the tip of your eyeliner through the flame of a lighter for a second or two, blow on the tip to cool it off a bit, and apply your eyeliner as usual. 2. Wake Your Skin Up With Ice Water. Does your face look tired, red, and puffy in the mornings? A quick dunk in ice cold water can help contract your blood vessels so your skin looks less puffy and more awake. Just fill a bowl with cold water, add a few ice cubes, and dunk your face for 8-10 seconds. 3. Soothe Irritated Eyes With Tea Bags. When your eyes are feeling puffy, itchy, or irritated, brewed tea bags make a simple and soothing remedy. Just steep two bags of tea in 1/2 cup of hot water for about 3 minutes, then remove the bags and refrigerate them until cold. Apply a chilled tea bag to each eye and relax for 10 minutes for refreshed and less puffy eyes. 4. Tone Skin With ACV. Apple cider vinegar makes a great toner that will not only leave skin feeling softer and smoother, but it can even help dry out blemishes too. Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 4 parts water and apply the diluted vinegar to your face using a cotton ball or pad. 5. Restore Shine With Olive Oil. If your hair is looking dull or dry, a simple olive oil treatment can restore your hair’s moisture and shine. Heat up 1/2 cup of olive oil in your microwave for about 10 seconds, then apply it to your hair and let it sit for 20 minutes under a shower cap. Afterward, shampoo and condition as usual for soft, shiny hair. [Read more ➜]( SCAM WATCH 3 Red Flags To Look Out For On Phone Calls [Photos of Jillee on the phone and blocking a caller.]( Many phone scammers rely on one (or more) of these tactics to get money from their victims. 1. Asking For Cash Or A Gift Card. If the person on the other line asks you to pay them by wiring money, putting money on a gift card or reloadable cash card, or using a money transfer or payment app, that’s a big red flag. All of these options will make it difficult for you to get your money back, which is why scammers love them. 2. Asking For Sensitive Information. It’s never a good idea to give out sensitive information like your Social Security number, account numbers, or log-in information to someone who calls you unexpectedly. If they say they’re with a specific business or agency like the IRS, look up their customer support number and call them directly to find out if the call was legit. 3. Threatening You With Fines Or Arrest. If someone on the phone says you need to pay them right now, that’s a major red flag. When businesses and agencies contact people regarding payments, they don't tend to do it by making threatening phone calls like a '40s mafia don. You should always ask questions and verify information before taking any action involving money. WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT? Hold Nails With A Hair Comb [Holding a nail with a hair comb.]( Use this hack to prevent hammer accidents and the cartoonishly swollen thumbs that follow. Whether you’re sprucing up your decor or working on some home improvement projects, you’ll probably need to hammer a few nails. But what you don’t have to do is put your fingers at risk with each and every nail. In fact, you can keep your fingers safely out of the danger zone by sliding your nail between the teeth of a hair comb until it's snug enough to stay in place. Then you can hold the comb up to the wall with one hand and hammer the nail with the other, and no one's fingers will be smashed in the pursuit of home beautification. JILLEE'S PICK Back To The MCU With Black Widow [An image of the movie poster for ]( Since the beginning of the [Marvel Cinematic Universe]( (MCU), I've gone to see almost every new release in theaters with my two youngest. I don't even read comics or watch many action movies, but I've found that Marvel blends the action with enough comedy, drama, suspense, and romance that there's usually plenty for me to enjoy. At least one new MCU movie has come out every year since 2010, and three per year between 2017 and 2019. But after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the drought ended last month with the release of [Black Widow]( starring Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh (Midsommar), and David Harbour (Stranger Things). I'm clearly a little biased here, but I really did enjoy this movie! There was plenty of Marvel's signature humor throughout, and it was great to finally learn more about the Black Widow herself, Natasha Romanov. Scarlett Johansson was as great as ever as Natasha, and I thought Florence Pugh was very endearing as Yelena too. Black Widow is in theaters now and streaming on [Disney+]( with Premier Access. (Or you can save your $30 by waiting for October 6th, when all Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream the movie at no additional cost.) ASK JILLEE Proper Storage For Rubber Bands [Rubber bands in a bowl.]( Pat from Dunedin, Florida asked: "How do you keep rubber bands from rotting? Here in Florida they just seem to disintegrate and become unusable." My answer: It seems like no matter where you live, there’s always some aspect of the climate that makes life a little harder in some strangely specific way. And now thanks to you Pat, I know that Floridians struggle with rubber band disintegration! It turns out that the biggest threats to rubber bands are heat, sunlight, and ozone. To combat all three, it’s best to keep your rubber bands in an airtight container like a sealed jar or bag and store it somewhere cool, dark, and dry. Those are ideal storage conditions for rubber, so your rubber bands should last a lot longer that way! Have a question you want to ask me?
