PLUS: This app will simplify everything about your cleaning routine. August 10, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! To me, it often feels like there are two different types of organizing. One type prioritizes the aesthetics of organization, and it looks great but costs a fortune. The other type prioritizes practicality and can be as affordable as you need it to be, as you’ll discover in Today’s Good Thing. Also in today’s newsletter are a few book recommendations from my recent reads in classic lit, as well as an online tool that isn’t exactly like time travel, but it's pretty dang close. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 18 Inspiring Dollar Store Organizing Ideas [Photos of dollar store organizing ideas.]( These are just a few of the genius ways you can use dollar store items to organize your home on a budget. I’ve been on Pinterest since its very early days, and sometimes I think I've seen every iteration of every Pinterest-worthy idea out there. But it never fails to surprise me just how many pins I’ve seen (and continue to see) that link to an organizing project that was completed using dollar store items. The appeal of “dollar store organizing” is clear, especially for someone like me. The items are inexpensive, so using them for organizing can save you money, and since dollar stores don’t usually have a ton of options, thinking outside the box can help you use the items they do have in creative ways. I also like the edgy attitude that goes hand-in-hand with dollar store organizing. It’s like saying, “Oh, you think I need $200 worth of decorative storage boxes to organize my linen closet? Give me $20 and an hour at Dollar Tree.” Since there are so many great dollar store organizing ideas on Pinterest, I picked a wide variety to share with you in order to provide maximum inspiration for your own organization projects. Check out 18 different ways people have used dollar store items to help organize their homes using the button below. There's An App For That [Jillee cleaning and using Spotless.]( The Spotless app makes it easy to keep track of what you’ve cleaned and what needs cleaning. If you ever have trouble remembering when you last cleaned something, [Spotless]( might just become your new best friend. With this app, you can create cleaning task lists for multiple areas like the kitchen, living room, bedroom, and more, giving you the satisfaction of checking off tasks while helping you stay on top of cleaning. Forgot when you last cleaned the fan blades? Just look up the task in Spotless to find out when you last checked it off. You can even assign tasks to yourself and other household members and even set deadlines, making it a useful tool for getting everyone to pitch in. COOKING 3 Things That Hold Steaks Back From Greatness [Photos of various steak tips.]( If your steaks tend to turn out okay instead of amazing, check whether you’re making these misteaks. 1. Your Cooking Surface Isn't Hot Enough. Cooking steak on a hot surface is crucial, whether it’s your outdoor grill or a grill pan. Preheat your cooking surface over high heat for several minutes before cooking to ensure it’ll be hot enough to sear your steaks properly, and use that time to prep other parts of your meal. 2. Cooking In A Nonstick Pan. The problem with nonstick cookware is that it just doesn’t get hot enough to sear steaks the way they ought to be seared. They aren’t built for the high temperatures you need to achieve that deliciously crusty exterior, so stick with stainless steel or cast iron cookware instead. 3. Cooking Steaks Fresh From The Fridge. For the tender and juicy steaks, take them out of the fridge about 30 minutes before cooking and season them liberally with kosher salt on both sides. This is just the right amount of time to let your steaks warm up a bit while the salt tenderizes the meat and enhances its flavor. JILLEE'S PICK 3 Recent Reads In Classic Literature [Cover images from ]( I've been on a classic lit kick recently, as you can see. Though these three are about as far from typical "summer reads" as it gets, I enjoyed each one because I learned something new about a significant place and time in history. (Isn’t reading the best?) 1. [The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas]( This book is very long, but I found it very enjoyable as well. For being a story about a man who was unjustly imprisoned for 14 years and escaped to plan his revenge, I ended up learning a surprising amount about France during the post-Napoleonic era. 2. [East of Eden by John Steinbeck]( I hadn’t read anything by Steinbeck since The Grapes of Wrath in high school, but apparently he considered East of Eden the greatest work of his career. I enjoyed his loving descriptions of the Salinas Valley in central California where he grew up, as well his fascinating reimagining of the story of Cain and Abel. 3. [Moby Dick by Herman Melville]( Of all three books, this one was the hardest to get through. But I was determined to finish, and I did end up enjoying the story and the way Melville presents it in multiple ways, from Ishmael's humorous poetry to the raging soliloquies of Captain Ahab. WHAT IN THE WORLD WIDE WEB Send An Email To The Future [An image of the FutureMe website on a laptop screen.]( Wouldn’t it be fascinating to make a time capsule of sorts full of details from your life right now and be able to revisit it someday in the future? And wouldn’t that time capsule be even better if it weren’t something you had to keep track of for fear of losing it? While [FutureMe]( isn't exactly a time capsule, in some ways it's even better. FutureMe is a website you can use to write an email to yourself that will be delivered on a future date of your choosing, whether that’s a few weeks or a few years from now. Just write the email, choose a date, and enter your email address. For inspiration about what to write when you email your future self, you can [read FutureMe emails that were made public]( by their authors. It's surprisingly moving to read the things people want to share with their future self, like their hopes, fears, dreams, anxieties, heartaches, and even the minutia of daily life. What would you like your future self to know? A FEW MORE THINGS... It’s National S’mores Day! While no campfire would be complete without a few s’mores, you can [make s’mores without a campfire](. Desperate times call for desperate measures, especially when it comes to the beautiful union of gooey marshmallows, melty chocolate, and a couple of graham crackers. On This Day: In 1793, the Louvre officially opened in Paris, France as the Muséum central des arts de la République. Today it is both the second largest art museum in the world, and the world’s most visited museum of any kind. LOVE OGT? SHARE IT!
