Also in today's newsletter: grilled cheese gets a gourmet twist, unconventional ways to use a toothpick, and an ode to a most controversial lunch meat. Enjoy! Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING Borrow E-books From Your Library In 5 Easy Steps [Photos of Jillee reading on her Kindle.]( Itâs easier than ever to browse through and borrow e-books from your local public library! 1. Get A Library Card. In order to borrow anything from your local library, youâll need a library card first. Some libraries will let you sign up for one online, but many require you to apply in person so they can verify your address and other personal information.
2. Visit Your Libraryâs Website. Once you have a library card, go to your libraryâs website and find out what service they use to manage their digital collections. Most libraries in the U.S. use a service called OverDrive for e-books, audiobooks, and more.
3. Search For E-books. If your library also uses OverDrive, youâll definitely want to download [Libby]( which is OverDriveâs mobile reading app. Use your library card to log into Libby, then youâll be able to start searching through your libraryâs digital offerings by title, genre, format, and more.
4. Borrow A Book. Once you find something you want to read or listen to, tap âBorrowâ to check it out. If the item has a waitlist, the button will say âPlace Holdâ instead, and youâll be able to see how many copies are available, how many people have placed holds on those copies, and when you can expect to be able to check one out.
5. Read. You can read e-books and listen to audiobooks youâve borrowed inside the Libby app, or you can choose to have e-books sent to your Kindle by linking your Amazon account inside the app. When youâre done reading a book, use Libby to âreturnâ it to your library, or just wait for the loan period to end and it will be returned automatically. UNUSUAL USES 3 Things You Didnât Know A Toothpick Could Do [Photos of toothpick tips.]( With their long, thin shape and pointed end, toothpicks make a useful tool for all kinds of household tasks. 1. Test Soil Moisture. Much like you'd check to see if a cake was cooked through, you can insert a toothpick into the soil of a potted plant to see if itâs getting enough water. If the toothpick comes out with wet dirt or mud attached to it, youâre good to go. If the toothpick comes out clean and dry, give your plant a thorough watering.
2. Make Garlic Easier To Remove. Certain recipes get their garlic flavor from whole garlic cloves, which are added during cooking and then removed before the dish is served. In those cases, youâll find that the cloves are a lot easier to find and remove if you insert a toothpick through each clove before adding them.
3. Microwave A âBakedâ Potato. Stick a handful of toothpicks into one side of a russet potato to act as âstilts,â and make sure it can rest on them fairly evenly. Microwave the potato-on-stilts for 4-7 minutes (closer to 4 for a small potato, closer to 7 for a large one). Elevating the potato will help it cook through evenly and youâll be chowing down in record time. JILLEE'S PICK Hawaii Dreaming With VRBO And Moana Blu [Photos of Moana Blu properties on Oahu.]( In the midst of planning our familyâs return to Hawaii (our first visit was back in fall of 2018), it evolved into a combined vacation and wedding for my second-youngest Kell and his then-fiancée, now-wife Aliyah. After accounting for Aliyah's mom, brothers, and a couple of other close relatives, I needed a place that would house 14 people. Feeling that it may be a tall order indeed, I started my search at [VRBO.com]( which has yet to let me down since we first used it to rent a home near Disneyland in 2016. As anticipated our options were limited, but by some miracle I found a place that was not only big enough for everyone, but that had a wedding-worthy lawn too. The VRBO listing informed me that the property was one of several managed by [Moana Blu]( a vacation rental company specializing in beachfront properties on Oahu. And whether you're planning a Hawaiian vacation of your own or just want to see some gorgeous photos of Oahu, [their Instagram account]( is worth a visit. REMEMBER WHEN My Bologna Has A First Name, Itâs O-S-C-A-R [A photo of a bologna and cheese sandwich.]( When I think of the lunches I ate throughout my childhood, there's one in particular I remember eating most frequently: a bologna sandwich on Wonder Bread with mayo and mustard. It was the most common star of our lunch boxes (and the lunches we ate at home, for that matter) by a long shot. And you know what? I never had any complaints about that bologna sandwich, nor its [catchy jingle from that TV commercial](. (By the way⦠where were that kidâs parents? I'm not saying that being able to sing about bologna while fishing isn't impressive, but even child prodigies need adult supervision.) What were the go-to lunches you remember from your childhood?
