The best towels for drying dishes Iâve ever tried, a tip for washing small items safely, and more. August 1, 2021 [View Online]( Good morning! Is it really August already? (Most of my July was spent planning and executing our family-vacation-meets-destination-wedding for Kell and Aliyah, so at least I have a decent excuse for being so befuddled by todayâs date.) But itâs not all bad, because this month is actually a great time to score excellent seasonal deals and discounts. Learn about 5 of them in Todayâs Good Thing, then learn a variety of other useful tips throughout the rest of todayâs newsletter. Jillee TODAY'S GOOD THING 5 Of The Best Things To Buy In August [Photos of products that go on sale in August.]( August may be light on holidays, but itâs not light on opportunities to score great deals. 1. Swimwear. While you can find good deals on swimwear in the spring, the really good deals donât start until this month. Stores will be clearing out their stock of swimwear to make room for fall fashions, so itâs a great time to get a new swimsuit for vacations youâre taking later this year or next summer.
2. Back-To-School Items. Early August is back-to-school time, which means you can expect great deals on kidsâ clothes, shoes, school supplies, and more. Target and Walmart tend to offer some of the best in-store prices, but if youâre shopping online or stocking a classroom, Amazon is sure to have great deals too.
3. Air Conditioners. Keep an eye out for great deals on air conditioning units this month. If yours is on its last legs, it's a great time to invest in a new one. You can always keep it in the box until next summer, but Iâm sure thereâs still plenty of hot weather to come if you want to start getting your moneyâs worth!
4. Office Supplies. Another benefit of all the back-to-school sales this month, at least for those of us who wonât be getting kids ready for the classroom, are the discounts you can find on office supplies. Whether you need supplies for your desk at work or furniture for your home office, keep your eyes peeled for great deals on these items this month.
5. Storage Containers. Back-to-school time is also off-to-college time, so many stores will also have sales on dorm-friendly items. But you donât have to be decorating a dorm to take advantage of these dealsâlook for low prices on storage containers, plastic totes, bed linens, microwaves, wall decor, and more.

I did too, until I started using this one. Our relatively new dishwasher is the first high-efficiency model Iâve owned, which has taken some getting used to. One problem Iâve been struggling with is the high-efficiency dry cycle, because the results seem to vary from load to load. Most of the time, some of my dishes come out dry while others are still pretty wet. But I've since figured out a solution to those still-dripping dishes, and it requires very little time and effort to do. When itâs time to unload the dishwasher, I make sure to grab one of [my favorite waffle-weave microfiber cloths](. A quick swipe takes care of any lingering water on each dish, and itâs so quick that I can do it as I unload them. In addition to using them while I unload dishes, these towels are a game-changer for drying hand-washed dishes too. They don't leave any lint behind (not even on glass), and they're so absorbent that you could dry every single dish you own and still be able to dry more. In short, Iâm hooked and never want to live without these towels! OGT newsletter readers get the best price on these microfiber cleaning towelsâ[get your exclusive reader discount here â](. WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT? Safely Wash Small Items In Your Dishwasher [Small items being put in a mesh laundry bag.]( Keep small items contained in your dishwasher with the help of a simple mesh laundry bag. There are certain items that are too small to go on the racks of the dishwasher and too big to fit in the silverware caddy, like measuring cups, lids for small containers, etc. Because of their size, these âin-betweenâ items often fall into the bottom of the dishwasher and end up lost, damaged, or both. An easy way to avoid these unpleasant possibilities is to zip those items into a mesh laundry bag first. Place the bag in the top rack of your dishwasher, and it will keep the items inside securely contained while still allowing them to get a thorough cleaning. And just like you can use your washing machine to wash more than just clothes, your dishwasher can clean more than just dishes. With the help of a mesh laundry bag, you can wash LEGOs, plastic toys, and other small items in your dishwasher safely and with minimal effort. JILLEE'S PICK The Perfect Game For Summer Get-Togethers [Photos of people playing Wet Head.]( A few years ago, we spent a few days at a lakeside cabin in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota to celebrate the 90th birthday of Daveâs mother Dorothy. We spent our days swimming, boating, snacking, and playing games, one of which was an unexpected hit with everyone. That game was [Wet Head]( a roulette-style game involving a helmet with a water reservoir at the top. Players take turns donning the helmet, spinning the top, and pulling out one of the attached pegs at random. Eventually, one unlucky soul will pull out the peg that connects to the water reservoir, causing it to empty onto their head. Due to the hot, muggy weather (and my kids being gluttons for punishment), they quickly switched to filling the reservoir with ice water. I donât know which was funnierâthe sheer terror on each personâs face as they yanked a peg from the helmet, or the shrieks from the unlucky person getting ice-cold water poured on their head. If youâre attending any family get-togethers before summerâs over, or are thinking of planning one, a few round of Wet Head is sure to make it a memorable affair. Itâs one of those rare games that the whole family can play togetherâjust make sure everyone wears something they donât mind getting wet! [See Wet Head on Amazon](. ASK JILLEE Deodorizing A Smelly Sink Drain [Pouring baking soda and vinegar down a sink drain.]( Pam from Chicago, Illinois asked: "My kitchen sink smells! I do not have a garbage disposal, but I do use traps over the drains to prevent food from falling in. How can I deodorize the drain? The baking soda and vinegar combo doesn't work." My answer: Drain odors are usually caused by food or grease that has gotten stuck to the inside of the drain and/or pipe. Keeping food and cooking grease out of the drain is the single best way to prevent odor problems, so continue using a good sink strainer and always dispose of grease in your trash, not your sink. To eliminate the existing odor, I suggest the following: Start by cleaning the actual drain and underneath any guards or seals. (These warm, grimy areas often get overlooked and can easily develop odors.) Pour a bucket of hot water down the drain to warm up the pipe and loosen up any food bits that may be stuck inside. And while you did say that baking soda and vinegar hasn't worked in the past, I think it's worth giving it another try. Pour about 1 cup of baking soda straight into the drain and let it sit for a few minutes. While the baking soda sits, pour 1 cup of white vinegar into a measuring cup or microwave-safe container and warm it up until it's hot. Carefully pour the hot vinegar over the baking soda and down the drain, then leave it alone for 15 minutes or so. Finally, pour several cups of boiling water down the drain to flush out the baking soda, vinegar, and loosened grime. That should improve the smell considerably, but if the smell persists (and especially if it smells like rotten eggs or sewage), contact a plumber to get to the bottom of the problem.
